My father joined the army at 14 as an apprentice (he was orphaned at 14). He soldiered through WWII as a REME engineer, battling with the desert rats in North Africa and then on to Monte Casino (one of the worst battles), Crete, France, Germany. Whenever I hear this song, it means a lot to me. And makes me wonder what happened to those young soldiers with such huge smiles on their faces.

Saw Quo in Den Bosch Netherlands with this tour. Carried my mate Dicky on my shoulders on Sunday with this song. The next day he got killed at 19 years old in a car crash. We Played this song at his funeral, now 38 years later, i still feel sad when i hear the song.

I listened to this song when I enlisted into the British army and it reminds me of the comradeship that I have. I feel blessed to survive Afghan but not so blessed to suffer with the mental trauma of the war zones I went through. A friend at Sandhurst served in the Rhodesian military and on the first night in camp they were woken up at 2 am by a fire drill, assembled on the main square and did military drill for four hours whilst this song blasted out on powerful speakers on a loop. I think that is AWESOME. I’d not have been able to get the smile off my face had I been there - I think that’s a genius level introduction to soldiering.

I remember sitting in the pub with my first girlfriend just after this song was released. The wave of nostalgia it brings back listening to it again is incredible and more so the fact that after what just over 30 years it's the first time I've actually seen the air guitar segment with the recruits at the end of the video.
