The organ solo praises the great Jon Lord. Don Airey is such a master, maintaining the ancient Hammond sound but bringing modern synth tunes as well.

Interesting as the M2 and M8 line ups are the two most successful DP line ups. For me I've always thought it was a universal opinion that DP M2 is the accepted distinctive version of DP, however talking to younger DP fans lately and for most of them the Steve Morse era stuff is the only Purple they know, they can hold a 2 hour conversation about the best bits of Bananas or Infinite but struggle to name many tracks off In Rock or Fireball haha, it's crazy. I guess all the online Deep Purple websites, podcasts, interviews etc has rubbed off on the younger fans. I watched a young guitarist absolutely nail "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" then he goes straight into the intro from "The Surprising" afterwards I asked him to do a Ritchie Blackmore riff, he didn't know any (apart from smoke) we talked for a while and he said him and all his friends loved mostly all the albums from Perpendicular to Whoosh and owned them all on CD, it's amazing how to most youngsters the Morse era to them is the real DP, i read recently that Whoosh is their best selling album since Who Do We Think We Are. I guess when Jon left the band in 2002 he had no idea how huge the band were about to get again, I still love M2 but have to accept M8 are catching up fast.

I grew up with Deep Purple. From the very first album in 1968 to the present. I’ve seen them live several times. I took my 32 year old son to see them in Biloxi, MS in 2019. He is a singer/songwriter and he was blown away by Deep Purple in concert. When I first heard “Nothing at All” I was blown away! I just had to take a moment (a few actually) and think about how far this band has come! I love Deep Purple!

This is such a masterpiece. It took some time to grow in me. At first, it collided with the idea of Deep Purple I have. But then something made me come back. After all, Deep Purple through the years is so many different things, sounds and experiences. I listened to it again and again. The composition is so hopeful and uplifting, just like the phrase "nothing at all" that Gillan makes clear it is an illusion. The actor too, has managed to carry with his moves and facial expressions the "nothing at all" illusion. Eventually, the resulting experience makes you realize how not "nothing at all" our collective circumstances are. But in the same time, you feel hopeful after the realization, instead of stressed and scared, thanks to the beautiful composition.

Whoosh! What a brilliant video to accompany a superb piece of music. Although I'd merrily sung along to the lyrics as I'd listened to the album, the imagery in the video really hammers home Gillan's message about the way we are merrily destroying the planet that gives us life ... as if "nothing at all" is happening. Stunning work from Deep Purple. Brilliant. So lucky that my favouirte band of my teens is still my favourite of my 60's.

LYRICS I'm talking to myself again And waving to a passing friend I've known her since I don't know when Ah, it's nothing at all Just a few of us walk arm in arm It's innocent and charming But the children seem to be getting alarmed Don't worry kids, it's nothing at all When I hear about the doom and gloom That's around the corner, and coming soon I take a sip of mother's ruin And sit with my back to the wall It's nothing at all Nothing at all And the old lady smiled It's nothing at all Then she blew all the leaves off my tree And the junk that sails our seven seas Is very nearly up to my knees But the platitudes and pleasantries Keep saying it's nothing at all I'll deal with it on another day If I close my eyes it'll go away So, bottoms up boys, and what do you say? Really, it's nothing at all It's nothing at all Nothing at all And the old lady smiled It's nothing at all And the summer passed away Nothing at all It's nothing at all And the old lady smiled It was nothing at all Then she blew all the leaves off my tree

My favorite song from the "Whoosh!" album and for me one of the best songs of the whole Morse era. As expected, an "artistic" clip in which the band is unfortunately not shown. For me, seeing the musicians is usually the most important thing about a clip. But crafted and artistically very nicely done. A lot of effort was made. But how I would have loved to see Gillan in the purple jacket with purple bowler hat. :) Somehow I have the feeling that I've seen the "bowler actor" somewhere on TV. I get Gillan's lyrics and the video only partially in relation. Both remain somewhat mysterious. And "The old lady" looks pretty young. A little Monty Pythanesk. But the most important thing ... there is a video. Unfortunately still no vinyl or CD single. I hope they bring this special song live.
