One of the advantages to having a farm is plenty of open space to pasture our laying hens and other poultry. However, what happens if you don't have the space and you want a natural way to increase the protein intake for your flock? Today we're sharing with you our choice for a healthy, earth-friendly way of giving those birds a little extra protein boost with GrubTerra black soldier fly larvae!

My birds proteins are scorpions(stinger cut off) I hunt at night with black light, maggots I raise in a 5 gallon bucket and tilapia fry I raise to eat and feed to channel cat grow outs in pool.

I know it's probably obvious, but what's your method for raising the maggots? Any particular tricks you use?

@@flash_flood_area Bucket and shoot. Same as black fly method. I use my fish and poultry scraps and the fly's do the rest. It is stinky so it goes in the back lot. It also keeps the flies away from the house.

@@flash_flood_area Nothing special, just change out scraps once a week. It does smell real bad. I do what my grand parents did. A little VIC's vapo rub under your nose goes a long way.

I imagine we would find a few scorpions around the farm for the birds to enjoy. We've seen them get ahold of the random scorpion stupid enough to get onto the pasture and it's crazy to watch how quickly they take them out.

Hey Melissa. We partnered with these guys for the folks that watch us who either don't have or want to farm, but still have some livestock. Black solider flies can be a challenge in confined spaces (even done right, they can have a pretty "ripe" smell), so this is a great option in that regard.

I wonder how songbirds would react to that? Most songbird chicks are raised on worms and caterpillars, not seeds, but it's getting harder and harder for the mama birds to find the foods they evolved with since so much land is now planted with non-native species that aren't host to the moths and butterflies the songbirds need.

Hmm, that's a good point. I imagine the birds would have a field day with them as well. We see the same thing with the many different kinds of wild birds around the farm. They dig through the woodchips for bugs and worms on a regular basis!

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I was just watching a video on native plants and they mentioned how just one bird will need more than 4,000 insects to feed a single nest of chicks in a season. Unfortunately, birds don't eat just anything like humans will. Would the songbirds recognize those freeze-dried worms as a protein source? Maybe try some in a standard bird feeder to see how the robins and blue jays react?

Yeah, I like them but need live critters. Grub Terra has them! Sent for some, and 1st order is free shipping. We have a couple of worm beds and a compost bin, all of which get gnats now. Grubs eat them and their eggs, and will eat fly larva, too.

Hey Martin! We've been kicking around the idea of raising them ourselves, but haven't made the jump into it yet. You'll have to let me know how those do for you!

We have a partnership with them, so this was the first intro to that. A lot of folks who watch us don't actually have a farm, but live in the city. This is a great option for them to have a good protein source without having the live insects to deal with.

We have been surprised just how much the chickens go bonkers for these. If we had the time or desire we might try raising the larvae ourselves, but it's not on the agenda for us right now.

It sounds scary, but it's basically food that never made it to the market. Post consumer would be the stuff we all put in the compost pile after we finish eating dinner!

Hey Jordan, how's it going my friend? With everything we have going on with the farm business, we just don't have the time to invest in that. Plus, all of our "waste" feeds the animals on the farm with very few exceptions, so a food source for the flies would be very limited. How is married life treating you?

@Edge of Nowhere Farm Hey, yall! It's going pretty well, married life is the best!! Kyah and I have started looking for a home with some land to really start going hard at homesteading and farming ourselves! But in the meantime, we have been planting a few things here and there. We actually started our own channel to start documenting our own journey as we learn to farm. It's called Dry River Valley. I see how growing your own larva might not be a priority project at the moment! Glad to hear from you keep up the hard work! Kyah and I will continue to pray for your success!
