There are claims that the Earth has a second moon, and that is actually true. In this video i take a look at quasi satellites, which are not actual moons of the Earth but from our perspective they do, and i take a look at the actual second natural satellite of the Earth.

Intro, outro and other clips in the video were made with Space Engine.
Some images are by NASA.

totally agree. these objects are fascinating and relatively at our doorstep. of course satellites could be sent to explore them but its a great opportunity for people to visit. it would be good practice for astronauts to tie up, walk around or float next to them and take samples by hand. what a cool mission that would be!

This may sound dumb, but I think we should have a stricter definition for what qualifies as a moon. Anything in space that happens to be orbiting a planet could be considered a moon now. I'd propose that any body significant enough to be a moon should be rounded by its own gravity. Otherwise, it's just a glorified asteroid.
@frankblack1185

Ohio Dan @Ohio Dan Everybody gets it all wrong anyway. The moon is the name of our natural satalite. Like Io is the name of one of Jupiter's satalites. So when someone says something like "The Moon's of Saturn" It's actually nonsense and gibberish. That they should say is "The satalites of Saturn.

It depends on the size of the sub-moon, a moon around a moon. If it's big enough to be seen than it would look like we have two moons in the sky, except when it's behind the moon. If it's too small to be seen than nothing changes.

I have an interesting question: What would it be like on the planet Io 1 billion years into the future? My theory is that by then, all of the geologic activity could blast away all of its density as all of the material disappears into outer space. What would it be like if you were on a planet with no density or weight? Would it collapse?

Io is a moon which orbits Jupiter, it is not a planet and its weight and density are not being dispersed at all. Even if they were in the future all that would happen is it would become less massive and less dense. If by some unrealistic events it did lose all of its mass it would just break apart adding to Jupiter’s rings.

anil2 well they have steady orbits around the sun so no collisions there, and for any object the comes into Earth’s orbit it would be torn apart by the Roche limit before it strikes Earth. Most of the significant collisions have already happened in our solar system even so if a collision did occur they only happen over the course of Millions I year so likely we wouldn’t witness one.

these asteroids orbiting earth arent actually real moons. i consider a moon to be an object orbiting a planet and that object is big enough to have some sort of gravity which means you could orbit or even "stand" on its surface so maybe around 1-2km big minimum size. so if an asteroid that big were orbiting earth i would actually call it a second moon
