Maurice White and the entire EWF was at my 25th Birthday Party! That was one of the most memorable threads in the tapestry of my life. He and the guys were so nice to me, Verdine danced with me and Maurice stood in the corner just observing. I had the BIGGEST cake I had ever had to this day! God bless you and rest in peace, Mr. White...and I hope me and Verdine will dance again before either of us transition, and I talked to Rahmle Davis a few years back when my hibby drove his limo. Such memories!!!

I listen to this song, Spirit, and Burnin Bush whenever I'm feeling 'some kind of way' and need to look within myself. R.I.P. These people like Maurice is on assignment. They live their lives with their mission and assignment always forefront within their minds. The reason that we do not see his type because 99% of people live strickly Carnal and they can not rise to the occasion although many are called but few are chosen. Beautiful...Just Beautiful! He wrote in his bio that Philip was supposed to lead this song initially. However, Charles Stepney thought Reece's voice was more appropriate for this song. Reece stated he was thinking about the lady that raised him in Memphis, TN that he called mama that was not his biological mom, For his mother left him and moved to Chicago when he was only 4 yrs old and that he really went through a lot , including abuse, when he was a child without his mother, Edna Parker,..... His Christian roots and all the difficult moments God delivered him from during his childhood really shined through Maurice's voice in this song! Wow, Excellent!

One of the best EWF tunes: Father, open our eyes, that we may see, to follow thee. Oh lord grant us, thy lovin' peace, and let all dissension cease. Let our faith each day increase, and Master - Lord please- Open our eyes, open our eyes He has given us, hills and mountains, he has given us, level places. He has given us food and clothing, given us shelter from the storm and the rain- And all that he provided, kept us good thru the storm and the pain- Grant us thy lovin' peace, and let all dissension cease, let our faith each day increase, and Master - Lord please Open our eyes, open our eyes ... There are so many things to love about this song starting with it’s inspirational lyrics. There’s the gospel piano chord changes of Larry Dunn, Maurice’s beautiful tenor, Philip’s angelic falsetto, and the combined vocal harmony of the group. The poignant chromatic crescendo and decrescendo of their muted horn and trumpet lines written no doubt by the late Charles Stepney, puts the cherry on top and lays this track all the way out for me. A musical masterpiece, right along with Burning Bush, Be Ever Wonderful, and my all time favorite Spirit! 🔥

This is more than Gospel, this is Virtuosic Gospel. There were a lot of great proto-funk bands in the mid-70'S: Kool & the Gang Commodores Parliament/Funkadelic Ohio Players Mandrill Rufus ...but they all pretty much faded away with the advent of Disco... ...except for this one. And consider this: As brilliant a horn band as they could be, and usually were, this sublime track is all vocals and keys, no horns whatsoever. What other "horn band" could have done this?
