Second beach at Port St Johns is a small, rocky cove on the rural coast of southern Africa, well known locally for its excellent surfing conditions. But now a dramatic story of death, witchcraft and mystery is playing out as sharks inexplicably kill local surfers. It has been the scene of five shark attacks, turning this peaceful stretch of beach into the African equivalent of Amity. What's really going on?

I was in South Africa for the first time in 1997 on a road trip from Johannesburg to St. Lucia down to Cape Town. The whole coast is pretty shark-infested and caution is advised, especially at the River mouth. The trip also took me to Second Beach and even then the bullshark was blamed for the attacks. Of course, there are also lots of tiger sharks, white sharks, makos.... I only enjoyed swimming behind the nets in Durban, although many sharks were caught inside the nets. I can highly recommend a visit to the Natal Shark Board.

If animals are being killed on the beach or dumped in the ocean nearby, sharks will be drawn to the area & attacks will take place.

One guy a long time ago said “sharks can smell 1 drop of blood in a million drops of water” and everyone keeps repeating it in all these shows like it’s fact. That would make maybe a bucket of water. If sharks can smell blood a mile away, that would put the number of droplets in the high billions of trillions of zillions.

How many factors line up here? This is not a shark issue, it's about humans willingly, defiantly putting themselves at risk, FOR FUN!!! Surfing near the world's largest Sardine migration??? Yeah, they'll need a whole team of scientist and experts to solve that mystery.

I agree because sharks are the garbage collectors of the oceans, which means they will eat anything. They are not going to take a bite out of a human and say to themselves 'oops I wasn't supposed to do that and take off'. I reckon they would actually consider us to be tasty morsels.

When they say “there’s nothing they could do”, what they really mean is “there’s nothing they would do”. Most people won’t enter the water to attempt rescue, putting themselves at risk, and if they are already in the water near the victim, they swim the other way. 😂

Growing up I always wanted to go to Australia. After doing much research and learning that just about everything that swims, walks, crawls and flies can kill you. I wisely went to Hawaii instead. What a heavenly place, loved the people. What a dreadful, heart breaking those fires were. My blessings to everyone.

Hi, born and bred Australian here! Most of the deadly animals you have read about you will never encounter while in Australia. I live by the sea and spend a lot of time in the water, have never seen a wild shark larger than 30cm and never been stung by a jellyfish. There are spiders and snakes, but you don’t see them often, they don’t hunt humans and deaths from them are very rare. It’s a beautiful country, there’s no where in the world like it.

"Sharks are eating humans here, and the reasons are unknown" Well... let's break it down, sharks are one of the top ocean predators, humans foolishly go in the waters where the sharks frequent. They're wild animals which makes them unpredictable and potentially dangerous, and we all know they're drawn to splashing around and shapes on the surface. Whether you get killed or just 'nibbled', all depends on how long the shark has been without food and how hungry they are. The best solution is to stay out of the water, it's a little known fact but 100% of people who don't go into the water, don't get attacked by sharks. Unless you're in that film where they walk up onto the beach and eat you. And on another note - sacrificing animals - NO! STOP IT!
