It’s no holiday for the gibbons of Thailand. Habitat loss, poaching for traditional medicine and the cruel capture of baby gibbons for both the pet and tourism trade have left all but one species threatened or endangered. Luckily the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Phuket is looking to change this. Join us as we tour the sanctuary and meet the gibbons that have been saved from the cruel fate of the tourism trade.

Glad you enjoyed it, Ethan. It is a bit of a bittersweet situation, but at least there are organisations trying to right the wrongs.

Earth Touch Yeah, that is a positive thing. It's a shame you don't see more people try to tackle the underlying issues ie: inequalities in social classes, education etc. You gotta combat what fuels the fire aswell, not just the flames

Poor Tam. My heart breaks for her. I’m glad she’s been rescued and can enjoy her remaining days. The cruel reality of what humans are capable of doing is just disgusting. It’s terrible.

Ok so what happens if a Gibbon takes a liking to a particular person and DOES NOT want to go back to the wild?

Photograph flashlights are too short to cause cataract, a more likely explaination for Tina's cataract is the high refined sugar in the food she ate.

AllMightyMaze Hi there, apologies for the late reply. You can volunteer at the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Phuket (www.gibbonproject.org/volunteer) or you can donate some money (www.gibbonproject.org/support-us).

I don't know. There is another highly social wild animal that humans kept as pets--dogs--and it arguably turned out well for both of us. I'm not advocating poaching of gibbons, but I disagree with this moralistic attitude that keeping wild animals as pets is always a bad thing. It can be bad or good depending on how it is done, why it is done, and what quality of life the animal has. Don't forget that life in the wild can be harsh and unforgiving. There is a reason that domesticated dogs have become varied into many forms and temperaments that aren't suited to survive in the wild. The reason is that we took care of them, protected them, fed them and now many genetic variations that would have died off in the harsh wilderness are able to thrive and be passed on to future generations.

It's brilliant we have incredible people and sanctuaries helping Gibbons. Those poachers deserve the death penalty, no questions asked

I love and wanted a gibbon. But when i saw this video, they are endgared and captured in the nature. I deside to see them on video instead. And respect to you who rescue them. But 1 question. If you organisation see gibbons ln captivity or human have then like pets, do you take them from them with force? Because you show people have them in citys. Or you can't do anything cause of the law? Thanks

I think this is wonderful, but the cages they keep them in are horrible. Why wire bottoms on the cages? Why can't the cages be attached to the ground somehow so the animals can walk on the earth instead of wire? I understand they spend a lot of time swinging from above, but it looks like they walk around a lot, too.
