If a classical pianist could hear real-time feedback from the Earthworks PM40 in their headphones as clearly as if they were in a control room, and then practice adapting to that setup over time, they would very likely achieve excellent recordings. However, in reality, their training from a young age is oriented towards live performances, which results in a very strong attack. In this case, recording with the Earthworks PM40 at such a close distance produces a sound that is overly harsh, and neither compression in pre- nor post-processing, nor adjustments in gain or pad, can make it sound pleasant. Anyway, when you play and record with the Earthworks PM40, the captured sound is exceptionally beautiful because of the softer volume, revealing rich details and creating a very warm tone.

Thank you for the comparison! As my KZbin suggests, I do a lot of piano recordings and getting the right tone is always a challenge. I focus on a warm sound, that's why I use Soyuz 013 mics. But I am really interested to hear the combination of the PM40 with the Soyuz.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll reach out to them about that mic and maybe do another test using that mic.
