In the movie Almost Famous, Russell Hammond is the biggest musical talent in the band Stillwater. He loves music and creating music but sometimes the creative process with collaborators hinders genuine feelings from being expressed and when you add ego to the mix... in the case of Russell, he went out for the night looking for something real - immune from the restraint he was feeling on your. This movie takes place in 1971 but the sentiment is the same. Escape from the pressures that throw off your center and you'll find your real. It's therapeutic.

As a former college concert choir singer this was really cool. Cathedrals are so much fun to sing in. XY mics or Stereo mics are great for recording choirs in a those types of spaces. You just need to find a good spot to put the mic.

What a great episode -- something for everyone, and so much to think about.

So, I would go with either an ldc pair mid side a few feet over the conductors head, or an xy pair of km184 in the same spot... PLUS a pair of ldc (414swould be good) in a spaced pair further out. Then, depending on the noise in or outside the building, a u87 in omni up in the choir loft for reverb. Combine the three sets and mix for best phase and reverb.

I really like you using the feedback from the comments in your next episode. The Earthworks sound really pleasing, much better then the SM7B, is perhaps no comparisment, but it really sounds good.

Not sure if you had any processing done with the SR117, but it sounds great on your voice.

Well put about "missing your life because of social media" I agree 100%; While I (or anyone else I ever hung out with) was never quite so obsessed I do see/hear about many people like that (I find especially horrifying how many parents randomly bring up how glued to the phone their kid is, how when their firends come over everyone's just on their phones texting) And like you said it's about the little interactions we have with people; I especially like to pause, look people in the eyes & wish them a nice day when I see they're bored & "lifeless" in their current position (Like some cashiers, ice-cream stand sellers...) & it's crazy how shocked of a facial expression people have sometimes when I do so... when everything's just not as "transactional"... and I should prob. do it more often. Also thanks for your advice! Hearing myself being mentioned during the podcast brought a smile to my face 😁

I like to use an ORTF pair close, and then a wide spade omni pair further back to get more room tone. I would run a decca tree for a full orchestra if I have the space and time to set it up.

@Bandrew Says Podcast I enjoy your podcast every week, Bandrew! Btw. I still use the DBX286 for some purposes. There are definitely better hardware channel strips out there. And with Rodecaster Pro 2, there is no longer a need for the DBX. But it's still convenient and I know it well. Probably I should make up my mind. Thank you very much for discussing my proposal for DAPs.

have you thought about getting back to reviewing cheaper microphones? apparently a lot has happened in that space with the amazon budget mic game. I've been seeing a lot of reviews of some of the fifine mics and they are pretty impressing.

My new ethos hissed like crazy and popped some. You must have a faulty 117. Earthworks must have cut the quality control of those price-reduced condensers. Your voice is somewhat grainy and nothing like other mics.

The most ironic thing about reducing a smart phone to be a phone is: Can you? To mind comes the iphone which dropped the call, once you held more than two edges of the device (design oversight, something about shorting contacts or so). My smart phone (Asus ROG Phone 1) is utterly useless as a phone. If I set it to speaker phone, the mic isn't picked up correctly in the phone application. The mic itself is fine and works in third party apps. The behavior with a wired headset (yes, my phone still has the TRRS jack^^) is the same: In calls people can't hear well what ever mic I plugged in, from withing the call app, but my other phone app recordings are fine. Then the last thing to do is hold the phone to my head, right? Since an update I can't set the phone to "hold" anymore while calling. As my cheek is made of skin, it dials and presses buttons when calling, so I have to make an awkward air gap. That was calling. Let's go to the messaging aspect. Mobile Carriers don't like messaging anymore and look into switching off services. In Switzerland, 2023 we got shut down MMS, which is very unfortunate.

Hey, thanks for the quote! I have that dream, that one day, you will turn to the screen with greetings to us earthlings and your second kidney will be gone, but Fritz will be there and he will transmit to us headphone equipped mortals Bandrew in all your stereo glory. And us mortals will, for the first time ever, *hear* you sitting right there, right in front of us. PS: Why are video podcasts mono at all?

The Earthworks mic sounds pretty cool on the Earthworks promo video...but I don't think it's a great match for your voice. The upper-mids sound a bit raspy or resonant, to me. ....Maybe it'd sound great as a snare mic.
