Lawrence, KS, is a target that would be hit for a very simple reason--it is in the middle of the missile fields of Kansas. It'd get thoroughly blanketed for that reason.

The bombs were strategically located in order to cause nationwide disruption, not to annihilate the entire country, in order for the people behind the bombings to take advantage of the situation and create a new government. Lawrence, Kansas is a nod to the TV movie 'The Day After' in which 'Jericho' is inspired from. Plus, Lawrence sits in close proximity (middle) between Topeka and Kansas City which makes it an effective target.

I live 25 miles north from Dallas. I should be safe from the heat and shock wave, but radioactive fallout will certainly be heavy in my area. and my apartment is not an ideal fallout shelter. Damn!

NYC in Jericho was supposed to have been hit; but in show, it was stated that the NYPD found the bomb and disarmed it before it exploded... This saving the city. Columbus Ohio was another target; but Hawkins took his bomb and left, sparing the city. It was Hawkins' bomb later taken to Texas, revealing who was truly behind the attacks.

Your bomb shelter is likely useless. You're sitting next to Fairchild AFB. That's not only a first strike target, but a multi-strike target. First will be an air burst launched from a sub to take out the soft targets. Then a ground burst 30 minutes later to destroy the runways. Spokane is also an air burst target because it serves Fairchild. You will need a blast shelter at the very minimum. Better yet, move the heck out of there. Depending on where exactly you are, your survival odds are low.
