Nuclear power plants have been the best source for carbon-free energy in the world. There have been nuclear disasters with these power plants, like Chernobyl. In the United States, the largest nuclear power plant there is Palo Verde Generating Station. As its location is near a major population center, what would happen if a nuclear disaster were to occur at Palo Verde? This scenario explores that.

PLEASE let me and others interested voice act for these. These scenarios are some of the best on the internet, and the only thing it really needs is real people's voices rather than robotic ones. Especially for scenes where we're seeing the perspective of people within the disaster, it could make them so much more realistic with real emotion in their voices.

Totally agree. Voice actors would be the icing on the cake. Particularly when one of the bots is unable to pronounce “nuclear” correctly 😑 Everyone can pronounce “New” and “Clear” so it continues to fascinate me that so many people - including a Cold War historian whom I recently encountered - are unable to string those two phonics together into “nuclear”. Meh. Voice actors for the win 🙂🤟🏼

I've never actually been in a dust storm, but I can imagine a severe one is basically a giant sandblaster, so it's not surprising that it would cause damage. Great job on this one!

Dust storms aren't that bad, but visibility gets really low, and it's windy as hell. Being in one during the night on the side of the highway is scary as heck lol. local resident near the power plant

Dust storms act an awful lot like a sandblaster to cars. On top of that, the dust could clog your air filter stopping your engine thus leaving you stranded. I used to watch a KZbin show called Roadkill they got moved over to Motortrend on demand and two guys took a dirt track racing Challenger into the desert and got stuck in a storm. The engine was completely screwed up from that. If stuck outside in one of these storms the dust can rip the outer layer of skin off. I've heard it was worse than getting frostbite mostly because the dust could burn your skin after it rips it open. It's a lot like being hit with salt.

I live about 20 miles from the plant, and I remember there being a close call in the past, but nothing serious. I'm very curious about the power station and I hope to tour it someday. You can see the water steam clouds from a distance. Grew up in this area Nuclear power is so clean, safe, powerful, and fascinating. 🇺🇲

Just want to point out a big error at the start. While yes there was human error in the chernobyl accident it wasnt the primary cause. The design of the reactor used graphite tipped control rods. When the reactor began running away and the AZ button was pressed the rods where supposed to stop that reaction. However with the graphite tipped rods it created a power surge that caused the disaster. Even with a perfect response, the design of the reactor made it impossible for the control rods to stop a meltdown at that point.

The northwestern-most edge of Tucson is about 120 miles from Palo Verde Station, so it would be outside of the radius here. However, that is probably where most people would evacuate to if this actually happens. The roads going out would be jam packed with traffic for sure

I’ve lived in Phoenix my whole life and always thought about what would happen if Palo Verde ever had a problem or was attacked for some reason. Maricopa County doesn’t have public shelters for its citizens anymore as far as I’m aware. So 5 million+ people could easily be in serious danger •~•”
@killerwhaletank
@killerwhaletank 6 ай бұрын
This is good, however given what happened with TMI back in the '70s, the instant that a meltdown was "imminent", they would announce some kind of evacuation plan. These plants absolutely have evacuation plans that are relatively easy to institute when necessary. And this? Oooo boy, this is necessary. Don't shelter in place. If you can, get the f*%& out of there.

6:11 "Moving north at fifty million miles an hour?" Whaaat? 😮 At that velocity it would reach the Sun in under two seconds, let alone Palo Verde. Or even Phoenix. I think that might originally have been scripted as 55mph.

"A Meltdown is not expected"? Well, I can say that not only would this message NOT be broadcasted inside a plant just on general principal (They'd hold shift-start meeting about it, but not make a station-wide announcement) plant officials would never use the term MELTDOWN in any way unless a massive accident is actually occurring let alone said one wasn't expected. I mean, you better hope is wasn't expected because if you survive the explosions and the radiation, the FBI would be crawling up your butt looking for Foreign peanuts in your turds.
@robertchapman2174
@robertchapman2174 6 ай бұрын
i believe that the announcement was supposed to be plant-wide.
@ImpetuouslyInsane
@ImpetuouslyInsane 5 ай бұрын
@@robertchapman2174I would say mechanical breakdown warning would be broadcasted throughout the plant, but the word meltdown would not be part of the normal safety vernacular. The one thing you don't want to do in an industrial setting like a nuclear plant is use any terms that actually have to do with that catastrophic a consequence in mind. You're more prone to have your workers do really stupid things if they're panicking. Now, if this plant was dumb enough to broadcast such vernacular over their PA system, it's not very surprising the plant exploded. The faster they try to work the worse the work ends up becoming. Incidentally, a meltdown would not immediately invoke an explosion. The meltdown would have to happen first, then you might get a hydrogen gas explosion which is not that big, then if the corium melting out of the destroyed reactor core burnt through the ground and hit groundwater, then you'd have a massive steam explosion. Not a mushroom cloud, and way more devastating considering it would be contaminating groundwater and blowing radioactive steam into the air from parking lots. I know these things are just for fun and entertainment, but the Captain Planet level of research kind of irks me.

This is good but a nuclear meltdown wouldn't cause a nuclear detonation. If it exploded at all it'd be because of internal core steam pressure
@ImpetuouslyInsane
@ImpetuouslyInsane 10 ай бұрын
There's the China Syndrome that CAN cause an explosion. It'd be a steam explosion once it hit the ground water under the plant, but it would be an explosion nevertheless and it could throw nuclear fallout far and wide.
