It’s a popular vacation spot for Europeans because of its beautiful beaches and mountain adventures.
But it also has a low cost of living relative to the US and other places so it might be a good place to call home, too.
After spending 2 months here, we’re truly stunned and we’re excited to finally share it with you!

Just spent several months in Greece, Macedonia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, and Albania. Albanians were by far the friendliest, happiest, and most helpful people I encountered. It was my second visit to Albania and I loved every minute of it. They have greatly improved their infrastructure and transit systems since I was there in 2012. They have definitely figured out how important tourism is to their economy and they’re doing it right. Good for Albania! I wish Albania all the best!

*Albania has 2.8 Million population. *Language does not have a lot of consonant clusters (like Slavic languages). It is a mono-syllabic language and day-to-day words are short generally. Some greeting words can be long because they are made of two or three words. *Graffiti used to be all over the city but it took the Mayor a successful campaign to remove and replace with professional street art. There is a team of graffiti artists who go around recycling the street art. (Ref. Jordan Peterson.) *Albanians are very fond of America & Americans because of their support in particularly during recent Balkan events. *There is a significant development going on in infrastructure; trains, busses, new airports and bay marinas, accommodation, resorts and tourism activities. *A country of water: 1,400 lakes; some of the oldest and most prominent in Europe. Many rivers, canyons, lagoons, waterfalls, natural spring sources, thermal baths and plenty of amazing beaches. Switzerland like mountain ranges in the north and many national parks. Very rich in flora & fauna; 30% of all European plants and flora are found in Albania. A little box of gems that's being polished rapidly.

Albanian is a unique language with influences from Slavic, Armenian, Greek and latin. Something like that. Beautiful country and very cheap. Some years ago, I was working north of Albania in Montenegro and decided to take a little trip to Tirane by bus. The bus was cheap, the (5*) hotel I stayed at was cheap but the traffic was manic. A taxi driver admitted it was a little crazy. But the food was excellent (way better than Montenegro), the atmosphere very pleasant and a guide told me about the city improvements that were going on including planting a lot of trees (in Montenegro, they just keep chopping them down and seeking shade in the summer in the capital is challenging). I really liked the place and have been considering moving down there from far north Europe where I now live.

I spent the month of February in Tirana and I would agree that it’s very pleasant, although I didn’t find it quite as cheap as Ecuador. Cheaper than Western Europe, certainly, but supermarket prices seemed pretty high considering Albanian salaries. Fresh produce and street food, coffee, etc. are definitely good value though. The one thing I would mention is that public transportation is not very well developed. It’s not really necessary in the city, but if one wants to take day trips or travel around the country, there’s not much organization. Hopefully they will improve infrastructure in the next few years along with all the building projects. I think it will be a very desirable place to live once it becomes easier to travel between cities.

I have been to Tirana, Albania as part of working for USAID. I loved it and there wasn't anything you can't do there. The beaches in southern Albania are beautiful. Yes, it is a big kept secret of Europe. Cost of living is extremely low, food it great, safe to walk around late at night. I was there in the late 1999 - 2000 when things were changing in Albania with the government. There is a lot of new construction and modernization in Tirana. My only real issue is I am NOT a smoker, and a lot of people smoke there. So, while in restaurants I use to sit outside.

I saw your “cheapest (or easiest??) places to retire and have been interested in Albania ever since. I was also excited that it isn’t in the schengen zone & and is very visa friendly for Americans. I have been in Europe for 51/2 years, most recently in Sicily, but I am looking for somewhere new. The bureaucracy in Italy is a nightmare & even with the beauty here & friendly people, I am not convinced that this is where I want to live longterm. I plan to spend a few months in Albania this year! Thanks for the interesting info.

I recently spent three months in Albania and don’t get me wrong, it is nice and people are friendly. It is also more affordable than other European countries but it is not dirt cheap as some people may think. I thought the quality of food wasn’t there. I live in Australia and we have abundance of beef, none in Albania. I grew up in Spain and I am used to good supermarkets with quality food, I didn’t find the food in Albania was that great. The transport was incredibly cheap and I didn’t mind their organised chaos when it came to transportation. The people are friendly and will help you out even if they don’t speak English. For me it is good to visit but not to live.

Hello Amelia and JT. We are an American couple who left the States in 2009 and moved to Ecuador. We were there for 18 months before deciding that it wasn't for us. We began traveling in Europe in 2012. We traveled to many countries before deciding to buy a place in the Republic of Georgia. We renovated an apartment here in Chiatura, which now gives us a base to travel from. We watched your video on Tirana. We've also been there and find it comparable to Tbilisi, Georgia. We can also stay here one year on a tourist visa. We look forward to more of your videos. Stop in Georgia to see us sometime.

For Americans or those whose passports didn't require a Romanian or Bulgarian visa, each allowing 90 days of stay, now they have joined Schengen zone, that means you cant stay in Schengen zone 90 days, then go to Romania 90 days, Bulgaria 90 days.... it's a bummer for those who didn't require a visa in first place, because the pool is getting smaller and crowded. On the other hand, for those who need a Schengen visa, having Romania and Bulgaria in the zone save some hassles not having to apply their visas separately. It will be ideal that more European countries not in Schengen zone but waive visa requirements. Now the few countries seem to be oasis like Albania, Serbia,Bosnia, Montenegro,Macedonia, etc.. If the whole Europe becames one single Schengen zone, that means only 90 days allowed. Not necessarily a good thing for travelers from some countries.

Greetings from NYC! Recently found your channel and thanks for the report on Tirana. Albania's been on my mind for a while, but farther down the list of other European countries, and your video moved it just a little bit up the list. As you may know, we have a lot of Albanians here in NYC, and they like to be in the restaurant and building management and maintenance trades; the super of my apartment building is Albanian, having served in the military during the bad old Enver Hoxha days. Nowadays he takes his entire family back to Tirana once a year to see their cousins and more distant relatives. We've become good friends in the past decade, and he tells me lots of stories about Albania and also shares a little bit of the Albanian language. Anyway, I loved your video, and I'm going to dig deeper into Albania! 🙂
