I’m in frp hell, what about plywood to frp, do I need to score the frp? And how does it hold on the ceiling.
@iplconstruction5786
@iplconstruction5786 3 жыл бұрын
What’s the purpose of the plywood? Couldn’t you simply anchor the plywood to whatever the FRP is applied to? As far as installing FRP to a ceiling, be sure to role the sheet well. The longer you role the sheet the better. If possible, use shorter sheets; say 8’ length sheets. Easier to manage in shorter sections.

Thanks for making this video on a specialty product like FRP. We install FRP and other wall protection products. Gluing to CMU (concrete block) takes several times more adhesive than it would on painted sheetrock. We cut out for outlets and other openings prior to hanging it. We also use a tin metal shears (electric) for making the long, straight cuts. That has worked well for us. We also roll every bit of the FRP to prevent delamination.

I worked with a guy who gave me some valuable information from the course he took, you bring the divider tight to your last sheet and install next sheet to the inside edge of divider, then move divider over so both sheets are covered. It makes it faster and easier, especially when your doing 12' sheets 😅

Excellent video! A couple of points: never push the FRP panel tight into the divider bar. Push it in only about half-way; it needs room to expand. The manufacturers insist on this. And allow 1 gallon of adhesive for each 50 square feet of panel. Now I have a question: the adhesive manufacturers all warn that you should never apply the adhesive to the wall but only to the FRP panel. No explanation. Any idea as to why? Ever had a problem? I prefer your method, if it hasn't had issues.

I’ve never had a bad experience applying glue on the wall. The glue doesn’t slide off the wall or anything like that besides large globs of it. However, by the time you begin to spread it, it stays where you trowel. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Converting a shuttle bus into a camper with a shower....how would you suggest dealing with the curved walls using FRP? Best to create a straight wall with ply wood foundation, or is it possible to bend FRP and still get good adhesion on a wall with a slight curve?......and thanks for the excellent tips!
@iplconstruction5786
@iplconstruction5786 4 жыл бұрын
When We did our FRP job, we had to put panels on a curved bar wall. We were able to wrap the FRP with the curve. I would recommend putting a generous amount of glue on the wall and holding it on the curve for a minute or so to ensure adhesion. FRP is pretty flexible so you should be able to apply the sheet directly on the curve wall. Just use a generous amount of glue. Thanks for the question.
@justlistening587

I don't usually make comments on youtube but you're making more of a mess than you have too. You should start by rolling paper on the ground to catch all the adhesive you dropped. You dropped quite a bit. Also, that middle bar is called a middle seam or H-channel, the end cap (J-channel) goes on top and bottom of the panel or when ending the FRP on a wall or corner where FRP is not continuing, not on an inside corner, that's what an "inside corner" is for and it's installed on the connecting panel. You had no coverage on your middle seam and was really heavy on your panel. The easiest and most dust free way to cut FRP is with a track saw attached to a HEPA Vac, my suggestion would be a Festool or something similair. As far as cleaning the panel, clorox wipes are amazing. Using a wet sponge, especially on the middle seam could leave water behind the panel. Water breaks uncured FRP adhesive down. That's why you should throw your trowels in a bucket of water for a bit before cleaning them. The adhesive wipes right off. Empty adhesive buckets work great for this and can be thrown away after. Just some suggestions.
@iplconstruction5786
@iplconstruction5786 2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate all of the terminology for the parts and where they go. I definitely missed a couple details in the video. However, I’m not sure I understand what you mean regarding no coverage on the middle seam and the panel was heavy. If you’re referring to glue coverage, I did apply a healthy amount of glue to the back of the middle seams. Using a router and guide is way less comber some than a track saw. It’s also a quicker set up; 2 clamps and a plank of 1x4. It just offers more mobility than a track saw and vac. We usually do put our trowels in a bucket of water either during a break or lunch and I agree it’s the best way to clean up equipment you used for glue. Again, I appreciate the clarifications far regarding terminology. Thank you for your input and thank you for watching
@justlistening587
@justlistening587 2 жыл бұрын
@@iplconstruction5786 As far as coverage I was talking about the adhesive. That's more terminology of the construction industry. It would make no sense, be a complete waste of time, and cause more of a mess to apply adhesive to the back of the middle seam rather than the wall. You claim that your method is the easiest and not to cause a mess. But your method is wrong, incomplete, and you cause a mess. In most installations the middle seam, J-channel, and inside corners are applied to the panel and taped, then the panel is hung- sweet and easy. As far as using a track saw, I'm not sure you've used one... 2 clamps and a track... thats your setup. Most tracks you don't need clamps on, just the track depending on if you take care of your tracks. How is that more cumbersome? Like most track saws Festools are small and mobile, the vac hepa system sits under your work table and makes a nice shelf for holding your saw and snips. Using a track saw I'd have the panel cut and hung before you'd have your clamps on and there would be NO mess.

It’s sad to see people like you so stuck in one way that it limits your thought process and creates the inability to see different methods to reach the same outcome. Innovation and new ideas are the backbone of modern trades. 50 years ago, you framed a house with hammer and nails. Now we have pneumatic nailers. If you want to further your expertise, then you HAVE to be open to new methods. Out with the old, in with the new. If you think you have the “best” method then I’m sorry to say, you have already failed. Find new “best” methods. Out do your current work. It’s people like you that really piss me off; you tell people WHAT to think instead of HOW to think. Your methods may not work for everyone. Allow people to fail and succeed with the knowledge of the end product. I’m sorry you didn’t appreciate my methods, but nonetheless, I hope you have a successful career.

@@iplconstruction5786 I never told anyone what to think and would never tell anyone HOW to think. Your giving bad advice online as if it's the "Easiest" and cleanest method when it's completely not. It's not a matter of being closed minded on my end. I seen your method... it was wrong, messy and not the easiest by any means. Also, between both of our methods we would never reach the same outcome. I would be done a lot sooner, with less mess and my installation would be done right. If you can't take critisism, doesn't that make you closed minded? You put an end cap on an inside corner in an instructional video of how to install FRP. That's not a new method... it's just wrong. Laying down paper isn't closed minded... it's just smart. Taping the channels and corners was just advice... what was you saying about being open to new methods? You downplayed tracksaws as being easier, faster, and cleaner because you've never used one. That would be another new method for you that you shot down pretty quick because "you think you have the “best” method". You really should ponder over everything you just wrote and reflect on the fact that everything you just said pisses you off about me.... is in reality your own thought process. I can understand where your frustration is coming from but I can't relate. Your a closed minded person who believes your method is the only method when the reality is you don't have the experience to tell people HOW to think... or install FRP. I have no issues allowing people to learn from their own mistakes... I have issues with people making videos that are setting other people up to fail from the start. As far as my career... it's been a nice one. I've made a lot of money correcting poor workmanship from construction companies and failed contractors who don't know what they're doing. It makes up about 40% of my companies yearly revenue.

Thanks for the video. it was very helpful. How did you attach the dividers or end caps?
@iplconstruction5786
@iplconstruction5786 3 жыл бұрын
I apply a small amount of glue to the inside end caps and I install them to the FRP sheet I'm about to install on the wall. I found that they tend to slip off the sheet as I go to install the sheet. A little bit of glue helps those pieces stay connected. As far as the dividers, I install them after I install the FRP sheet. I also apply a small amount of glue to the divider; this time on the back of the piece. A tip for applying glue on the dividers/end caps, I typically scrape off the access glue from my trowel and I use that for the dividers/end caps. You don't need a lot of glue for it to stick. I hope this was helpful to you. Thank you for the question.

Great video! I have a question; I'm thinking of putting FRP over a 8 ft high concrete wall I have in my basement laundry room, the concrete wall seeps water during the rainy winter season into a concrete catch channel on the floor where the wall and the floor meet. I basically want to hide the seeping concrete wall but allow it to do its seeping into the water channel, I'm wondering if I have two options for this FRP installation considering my desire to allow the concrete wall to seep water in the winter. Option #1, glue the FRP in a way that is just applying the glue with 6 inch vertical swipes every twelve inches or so to allow water to seep, or option #2 by framing the wall with 2x4's and screw mounting the FRP to the wood. What do you think?

We used mineral spirits instead of water. Like magic cleaning glue. Also, don't roller over the edge because you'll end up rolling tracks of squeezed out glue from the side. We used a jig saw to cuz our sheets and then glued the sheets rather than the walls. Same result I guess, but I think I'd have rather glued the walls rather than have the cut and glue stations before tossing them on the wall.

Will it stick to the ceiling the same as the wall without needing support?

I've been asked to do a bid on a bathroom and pool equipment room. Are there cornices or moldings for where ceiling meets wall? I guessing that could be caulked? It doesn't look that hard but I know nothing of frp so trying to learn before I bid. My job will be a 20 sheet frp Job how much glue will I need?

@@vanessajones5241 For any FRP installation job, I use Titebond Fast Grab FRP Adhesive. Its the best. Every other brand I've used had been too runny. I would recommend applying a generous amount of glue on concrete. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment.

What brand FRP is this? It looks like a nice smooth gloss surface which is what I am looking for and I need 9' tall by 6' wide which I assume would be 2 pieces.

The FRP panels are typically 4’x10’. As far as the brand, I do know. All I know is, the boss bought panels from L&W Supply. I hope that answers your questions. Thank you for your comment!

Can you use regular construction adhesive for a single panel install?

If you do use construction pieces, I would definitely recommend you roll it generously. Just to get the blue as flat as possible. Other than that I don’t see why not.
