I rebuilt my L83 in my garage like this guy. 185k miles, only thing wrong with it was it had a failed lifter and wiped a cam lobe causing a misfire. I sent it to a machine shop to for the hone, deck the heads, level the block, valve job, and polish the crank journals. It needed a new cam and you’ll want to do a DoD delete anyways, and that’ll require a reprogram of your PCM also. The bulk of the expense is really all the new seals and bolts and bearings and rings and gaskets. I bought all new hardware that is recommended to replace because I wanted to get another 200k out of it. It adds up quick.

what was your total cost machine shop and all?

When I pulled my L83 to DOD delete I built a tester for the piston oil “squirters” spelling error. I found that some released early so I replaced all eight.

The piston intention is sleekly for pooling fuel for start up.

It is to help better mix the fuel and air in the combustion chamber for a more even flame front.

A DIYer who does not have the dial bore gauge and micrometer (or the skill to use them) to verify bearing clearances could just get some plasti-gage. Also, if one is investing the time and funds to rebuild the engine, is reusing the TTY fasteners the right place to save money? The OEM screws ain't that expensive in my experience.
@paragonengines1924 Жыл бұрын
Yes, plasti-gauge is one way to check clearance. Replacing the bolts is the best practice to use, but if you are trying to save as much as you can at home, reusing the bolts can be one of those ways.
@scudzuki Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't use the reluctor ring that you're indicating off of to pry the crank longitudinally. You're adding the flex of the ring to the actual crank movement. One could just as easily pry at another main cap.
@paragonengines1924 Жыл бұрын
Fair enough, I was taking the measurement after the ring returned to it original spot.

Can you add those kind of pistons on a gen 3 block

Have you by any chance compare the crank and see of a 3.2xx stroke crank from a gen 4 4.8 would fit in?

What did you torque the main bearings & rod bearings to ? Thank You

I have the same motor in my truck. Recently has begun burning excess oil. I believe is getting around the rings. I am strongly considering a refresh like this. Curious if you know roughly the cost of parts and the cost that you would charge to do this job?
@paragonengines19244 ай бұрын
A refresh like this would run about $4K for everything you see in this video.

you would happen to have all the tolerances would you? Id like a book and it seems like the gen IV rebuild manual will suffice

It shouldn’t be tightening up as you get closer to the parting line. Given the amount it’s shrinking and the power level this thing is likely going to be at, I doubt it will cause a problem. But… I if this thing was making big power and or turning RPM there’s no way I’d let it out the door with the clearance tightening up at the parting line because that only gets worse when it’s running. Just my 2 cents. Thank you for sharing. Ps… is your name Austin?

So is a 2020 l84 an lt engine or an ls engine
@Cracked1ce Жыл бұрын
ls/lt main bolts are not TTY. they are only Torque To Angle
@paragonengines1924 Жыл бұрын
Torque angle is the sequence you use to torque them. With that process, you are brining the bolt up to its yield point, hence "torque to yield"
@Cracked1ce Жыл бұрын
@@paragonengines1924 not all torque to angle bolts are torque to yield. Common misconception. A bolt is only torque to yield if it enters plastic deformation. The stock head bolts do enter plastic deformation, but the main cap bolts do not. They only enter elastic deformation. If you look in the AC Delco rebuild manual you will see that the main cap bolts are not an item that is replaced during a rebuild.

What's the difference between a motor and an engine? I was told that engines are the combustion type and motors are electric. Which means all those years calling engine mounts motor mounts was incorrect, or things changed on us, I don't know, but we may need to relearn our vocabulary words. I still don't get it, because a motorcycle had an engine, but we call them motor-cycles. Next they'll be telling us 2+2=5 if not it's racist.
@paragonengines1924 Жыл бұрын
Engine: a machine with moving parts that converts power into motion. motor: a machine, especially one powered by electricity or internal combustion, that supplies motive power for a vehicle or for some other device with moving parts. They seem pretty interchangeable to me, I wouldn't get caught up on it. English is a hard language.
@Azure_Zahab_Truth_Zealot Жыл бұрын
@@paragonengines1924 lol, English is definitely a hard language. Sometimes I think THEY're just screwing with us. Did you know the origin of "nice" is foolish, and blessed was about bleeding out or something like that. We have a lot of man-made traditions with very questionable roots. Anyhow, I'm rambling and totally off the subject of engines. Keep up the good work!

America 🇺🇸 💪🏼🦅🛠️ What do you charge for a 6.0 full rebuild I want a soiled 600 hp going in a 96 jeep Xj?
@paragonengines1924 Жыл бұрын
You could get 600 at the crank out of a 408. You would probably be around $10K+ for a build like that depending on how complete you want it.
