To not create waste you can also buy a reusable wider house painting brushes, like 3inch wide Purdy's, Wooster. I'd recommend getting the brush with narrow tapered handle. It make spinning the brush easier in the final stage of cleaning.

Hello! Just found your channel this morning and really loved the lesson you shared. I am new the the art world, and I have a couple of questions. 1) How do I know a good quality canvas from a not as good quality? Also, you mentioned about a cool or warm color for your gesso layer. Do you try to paint warm colored paintings on warm gesso? And cool on cool? I do see a place to see all your videos and I'll look there for answers too. I know this part doesn't make a difference in my painting, but, I love your voice and could listen for hours. So many on KZbin don't. It makes it harder to listen to. haha. Best wishes.
@PaintingWithYovette5 жыл бұрын
Gosh I love your questions and comments Aimee! I am happy you found me, and I hope you find lots of fun things on my channel. A good quality canvas will be tight and sound like a drum when you tap on it, and the grains should run straight and smooth like in a fabric. A lot of artists tint their canvas before painting. Browns for a warm painting, and gray or blue/gray for a cool painting. There is no one way, it is just how an artist decides they want to do it. There is a lot to learn, so just watch a lot of artists, and see how they do things. Thank you for watching.

Hello! Great video much better than using paint brush to apply gesso. I assume you reuse the foam brushes? How do you clean the gesso from the foam applicator?
@PaintingWithYovette2 жыл бұрын
I do clean the foam applicators Mrs. D. First I blot out all the paint I can with paper towels. Then, I have a 3 lb coffee tin filled half full of water. I rinse the applicators in those best I can, then rinse outside with a hose. They come out like new!

Nice! I have used those pads for a long time to paint rooms, never thought of using it for Gesso-ing. Genius! However, do you have any recommendations on cleaning it after use, since I would like to reuse it over and over, instead of having to buy new ones every time?

Like your video, just subbed. But PLEASE in over 6 minutes, please tell us the purpose of gesso. What exactly does it DO for a painting??? I've used gesso and heard about gesso for many years, but STILL do not know exactly why artists use it. What is the benefit of usin g it???
@shumeister10595 жыл бұрын
Gesso preserves the canvas from deteriorating. This is important if you use oil paint. With acrylic it doesn't matter.
@ReaTexas5 жыл бұрын
Gesso preps the canvas to receive the paint. It can also smooth the weave in the canvas. I paint with acrylic and to me, priming with gesso is a necessity
@PaintingWithYovette5 жыл бұрын

It is with me too Rea. I love a smooth canvas to paint on.
@PaintingWithYovette5 жыл бұрын
That is a great question Planet! Others have hopped in to answer your question and they are all correct. Gesso is like a white acrylic paint, only thinner. It dries pretty hard so it makes a canvas stiffer. It has more of a grain feel to it than acrylic, so paint sticks easier. My personal reasons for using it is becuase it makes the canvas much smoother, and that saves on the wear and tear of my brushes! Hope that helps!

I have a best kept secret to share with you too, the 8x10 stretched canvas's you get at the dollar tree are also gallery wrapped and pre-coated with Gesso and guess what?... they only cost a dollar! While it's true they don't feel quite as substantial as the more expensive canvas's, they only cost $1 and you don't have to do any prep to them if you don't want to, you can just unwrap and start painting and they only cost $1!!!!

I appreciate that you also voiced your opinion Mary! I realize not everyone likes the way I teach, but it's OK. There are a lot of people who do like it and they come back! I am here for anyone who likes learning what I have to teach. Wishing you a wonderful day! Thank you.

Very handy tips. While my landscaping painting style is different from yours, I’ve still learned some very handy tips. I particularly like your methods for clouds that work w/ oils (& acrylics)😊

You’re a genius! I’ve always used the foam brushes to apply my gesso but I’d never thought about using one of those applicator sponge things even though I love using them when we paint the rooms!! Great job thinking outside the box! Keep it coming 👏

That's for the tip. I'll be most thankful to have a another tip,how to clean the bas of a small and big brush. I try's many good cleansers and even in a new brushes they didn't remove all the paint from them. THANKS for your Tim.

Are you using acrylic paint or oil paint?
@פרחיהמזרחי4 жыл бұрын
@@PaintingWithYovette oil paint
@PaintingWithYovette4 жыл бұрын
When I use oil paint, I use odorless thinner. I have 3 cleaning containers. The 1st container gets most of the paint out. The 2nd container cleans the brushes even more. The 3rd container is the one that gets the brushes really clean. I have a wire cleaner rack in the bottom of my containers to swish the brushes around. Then I hang the brushes upside down, handle up to dry. Hoping that helps you. ***** Kada koristim uljne boje, koristim razrjeđivač bez mirisa.
