Easiest Way to Grow Lots of Sweet Potato Slips

I followed this video and grew slips from 1 purple sweet potato last year. I got around 25 plants from just 1 sweet potato and harvested around 30 lbs of sweet potatoes!!

@@cmmrris1 neR the end, many of the slips got quite big so I separated them and kept them in water alone. Then I put them in the ground with amended compost. (Similar to planting green onions). They were sad looking for a week, but perked up!

This is my obligatory PSA to let everyone know that sweet potato greens are delicious and very good for you. You can trim the younger leaves & stems to use like spinach (I use these in my green smoothies frequently). NOTE: this only applies to sweet potatoes. Do not eat regular potato greens as those are poisonous. Sweet Potatoes are a member of the morning glory family and the tuber (sweet potato), vine, greens, and flower is edible. Regular potatoes are a part of the nightshade family, so the greens are poisonous.

I can't even eat the potato tubers, nor tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, or even goji berries, because the amount of solanine in them makes me ill. Gotta hand it to the nightshade family - they can hide their poisons well!

I am in Nevis in the Caribbean and I am concerned about a world food crisis ( who isnt) . I watched this video many times and tried to copy what he did. Surprisingly, it actually works. I even cut my sweet potato in 2 as there were shoots on the top but no roots. I followed his instructions as much as possible. Now I have 5 shoots on the top half and the bottom half it is developing many slips. Thanks to this video.

@@sjfam8291 Hi I am also a first time farmer but my research on the net and youtube shows a trend. Sweet potatoes takes about 6-8 months depending on the variety and the zone you live etc. When the leaves begin to turn yellow cut the vines (save some vines to make slips). Gently remove soil for amendment (reuse) and harvest the potatoes. ( these are in my notes which I took watching many many videos on growing sweet potatoes). I hope this helps

I know this is an old video but I have been sitting here watching videos for the last week off and on and yours is the first video I’ve seen that fully describes what a sweet potato slip is and the actual process (wrong and right) and description of each. I’m a beginner gardener with raised beds and last year I tried and failed miserably at potatoes and sweet potatoes among other vegetables. I’ve been growing slips for over 8 years since I first heard it could be done. I’ve actually kept the same sweet potato crop going all those years by using potatoes from the very first crop I grew. I have not found it matters which half of the potato you put in the water. Some bury the potato 1/2 way under soil and take the slips as they grow. It’s almost hard to fail growing slips. Just slice it in half, place the sliced end into water, and the slips will grow. I also haven’t had any issue with taking the slips off without their own roots. I simply wrap the tiny slips in a sliver of paper towel to help them stand up, keeping them watered as the roots grown, then plant them in soil, then in the ground or pots. Enjoy and grow your own food as much as you can. 👍🏼

I tried your way of getting slips and . . OH. MAH. GAWWWD! BUT- theres something I want to share that I KNOW a TON of peeps would LOVE to know + use! So my son accidently "watered" some of my kratky method lettuces back in 2010. He was 3 at the time + obviouslu didnt understand the hydroponics. (I soon after, at about 5, taught him the science of hydroponics but using a 3 layer system I developed using water on the bottom, middle layer has a small microbiome with nematodes, microorganisms, etc. And then a very thin layer of dirt where the roots are but the microbiome slowly comes into- wasting tons of mulah and tons of project materials- they were refurbished eventually!) Anyways . . by my son doing this I noticed over the next week, a SUBSTANTIAL amount of growth! Lettuces that SHOULD have taken another 3-4 wks only took- at most- another 2 & 1/2 eks using this method. Since then, I've used this SAME EXACT WAY to propagate ANY + EVERY type of plant, veggie, fruit tree, tree cutting, etc. Using a regular spray bottle on the stream method, (not viciously but ensuring that the bottoms, end of the cuttings / clippings, get more oxygen) stream spray the water- THIS IS IMPORTANT! NOT THE PLANT ITSELF BUT THE WATER! What this does is oxygenates the water as every 12-24 hrs the majority of the oxygen in your cup of water, is soaked up + used by the plant / cuttings. Regardless of the size of your cup of water with clippings, just ensure your water level, when you go to top up your cup, ensure you dont go past the point your water was the 1st time. Drawing a line helps. Those who forget things often, by placing the cuttings / plants near your coffee pot, kitchen sink window, etc (anywhere BUT the bathroom- obvious reasons due to mold, humidity, even tho theyre already in water, a small section of before the water will collect "gunk" and get nasty!) Ensure youre changing your water every 2-3 days and on that day- DONT SPRAY more than 3-4 stream sprays into the water. You dont want to over do it! I hope this helps someone out there and speeds up some late planters veggie production, flowers / plants growth! Youre welcome, y'all! I tried this last year with organic potatoes from a local market. After 10 weeks I had only a small amount of small roots showing and the potatoes were starting to rot. I thought they must have not been organic. This year I bought two organic potatoes from each of four different grocery stores and health food stores. The result was the same as the prior year. I use only filtered water with the chlorine removed. I also bought 10 slips from a well known garden supply company this year. When they arrived they looked dead but I planted them anyway. Only one survived. I’ve watched several videos, including yours, and they all make it look easy. Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks for a great video, very informative to this beginner sweet potato home gardener. So it seems that no matter how you cut or not cut a sweet potato and put it in water you’ll get some slips. More slips in some ways and less in others but you’ll get slips in the end. That is really good info. I think I’ll put this on paper in a summarized fashion and keep with my gardening notes.
