I am teaching a class on pollinators. This morning I photographed a female and male New Zealand squash blossom. A small bumble bee was sleeping in the male flower. The female flower has a swelling ovary, which will turn into an edible squash. Male and female flowers are distinct as the video shows. Good teaching.

Yes, I do this every morning and it totally works. You should do it in the morning, ...no not that, I mean pollinate your squash. Especially if you have cucumber beetles, ...they'll have the pollen eaten by 10:00 am. You can easily see the pollen on the male stamen, and also on the base of the petals. I carefully tear away the petal and dab that on to the pistil of the female. You can use most any variety of squash to pollinate another. It doesn't have to be the same variety. When cucumber beetles are present, you can tie a plastic baggie around the head of a male flower in the evening that will open in morning. All the pollen will be preserved, and you will have enough to pollinate 3 or 4 females. You can easily tell a male bud that is going to open. It will be orange. Good luck, and thanks for a great video John

This was so informative. I'm growing squash in my backyard so I will definiteky pollinate them. I'm glad to know that I have more males as I'm looking at my squash right now. I didn't know I could eat the flower. I'll definitely watch this again to make sure I'm doing it right. By doing it, I mean pollinating. Lol!

You mentioned a lack of success (at least as of 2012) in finding a female. If this is still a problem, may God send you a fertile female to marry so that you can engage in some prolific pollination, and raise many healthy plants.

I always enjoy and get a kick out of your videos!!! You are a very energetic and enthusiastic person and you always bring a smile to my face!!! This particular video of course you had me rolling in laughter! Although I have not seen every single video you have out there, I have watched many and I always enjoy, BUT of the videos I have watched this one has by far the best!!! I love love love your sense of humor!!! Now I know in all seriousness you meant what you were teaching literally but there was a comical side to the words and their meanings and how some would take what you said no matter how innocent and you were getting a true kick outta explaining this one! Just thinking of that alone can bring some oneryness out in a person and that was evident here for sure! Loved it!!!! People sitting squirming worried about checking a flower against their parts and probably worried about doing so in public, in the Broad daylight, with the sun shinning directly on those exposed parts like a spotlight... Lol!!! This has completely made my day and I will spread the word like a wildfire...LMBO!!!

There is another thing you need to know... The time of day. The females are viable only on the day they open, and only for a few hours after they open. Giant pumpkins open at sunrise, but other varieties may open in the evening.
