You might have a better catch rate if you turn your trap 90 degrees, so the animal is stepping into the trap. When the trap fires, the loose jaw always comes up first. By him stepping over the loose jaw, it will throw his foot out of the trap. By setting the trap long ways to the hole, the trap will close around his foot and you’ll catch him deeper in the trap. This trick was taught to me by an old trapper ,who raised 12 kids trapping for 40 years. Also, He used beaver castor in his dirt holes. They can’t pass it up! Your looking good, enjoyed your video.

I'm 77 and trap no more but when I did trap I would set my trap like you did in front of a hole. When I would dig out a spot for my trap I would set the trap and put it in place and slip a piece of wax paper under the trip plate and over the two trap jaws. This way when I would sprinkle dirt or snow the wax paper kept dirt and snow from building up under the trip plate.

Why are you setting your trap dead center of the dirt hole you made? Why not offset it for the left or right side/foot? I've never had good luck planning on one walking bow legged into a dirt hole? Also. I didn't understand why the deep hole was so necessary? A simple 3-5" hole wouldn't do the same? No attacking your style or "driving from the back seat" type deal but I didn't understand that part. You are right on gusto though. That's some funky stinking working stuff
@CarolinaCoyote2 жыл бұрын
I like the deeper hole sets because there’s no way anything can get the bait out of the hole without being caught. I do offset the trap some but not much. Again, since the hole is so deep they will continue to work the set until they get caught. I’ve set some traps before and after getting pretty much finished I’ll realize that the trap isn’t as offset as I would like it to be but that’s where having a deep bait hole will help out.

I just started trapping seriously last year, before i had borrowed a few and just sorta set them out and hoped something would get caught that was taking my chickens and ducks. I have struggled for a long time trying to get it right but this video has been so helpful. You are the first person i have seen use the poly fil to keep the dirt from getting under the pan! I use the stuff for aquarium water polishing lol my hardest deal is getting the trap set firm. Im using duke traps so they were reviewed kinda hard to get solid but as far as how deep of a hole i need to dig and what baits and lures to use for my area(southern WV) im clueless, I usually end up digging too deep i believe. I can make the hammer and save some cash there but i just dont really know where to start. I have 4 traps so far that are foot holds, 3 dogproofs, and 2 box traps. I have heard trappers swear by hellfire but also a few say its crap so idk what would be good around my area.
@jamesgentry68642 жыл бұрын
Listen close. Rule number 1 is don't get I'm your head over it. Watch a good video like this thst shows bedding the trap that's the most important part. If it's not solid they will dig it up. Just get out there and do it. For the first couple years I was just thinking about it too much. I was so deep in my own head from a thousand different videos, but realized that most every one was using some variation 3the dirthole set, and most importantly setting on sign. Have to set on sign. But honestly just practice bedding that trap so wherever you touch it that thing is still rock solid. And don't over think it. If you haven't already boil your traps as well. Gets all the oil and junk off. Hopefully you got you a couple over the last year and catch hundreds more!

@@jamesgentry6864 so much has happened in the last 5 months to be thankful about! I decided to just take a leap and i sent bill duke an email, if you ask all you can do is be told no. He actually decided to work with me and sent me out some 650 pro series traps, videos of the unboxing are on my channel. It was such and still is such a big deal to me that he decided to sort of sponsor my channel and help me out. When season came in though my mother was in rough shape with her hip so i set the trapping aside to help her with dr appointments and all that. We were on the road 3 or 4 times a week all day long driving but she was approved and got her hip replaced and is doing great so far about 3 1/2 weeks later. Once she was able to get around by herself good i went to the woods but was only able to set up one foot hold set, 2 DP traps, and 2 live traps. It took a while but i finally trapped a red fox. Its such a small feat but it being my first real predator trapped besides opossums and like 3 coons i was extaric. Thank you for the kind wishes, the video of skinning out the fox will go up next in a few days but i have had so much support from people and i just cant thank you all enough. It really helps to read through the positivity when i have a rough day with no catches. Im still a novice at filming and editing but most trapping videos are pretty cut and dry. I watch a lot of trapper J and coon creek outdoors for my ideas and coon creek and justin are two very good examples that when people say you HAVE to do it a certain way, thats just bias input on their end. Justin uses CD's and cotton shirt fragments and catches trophy mount grade bobcats and hes so basic with what he does and thats inspiring for people who were told you have to be so meticulous or you wont catch. Coon creek is a good channel for info on the skinning and fleshing side of trapping. Hes who i watched to figure out the dos and donts on skinning the red fox. I have skinned squirrels down to the eye lashes for years but for to skin for the fur trade coon creek is the perfect channel to watch. He shows you dont need a fancy fleshing beam in a crunch, a pvc pipe and some dirt to drive it in and a machette will work to get you by. Im a DIY trapper so making my own stuff is more fulfilling to me then buying everything. This guy makes trapping an art form but you dont have to make nearly that perfect of a set to make a catch. I dont even dye my traps, i throw them in the dishwasher and then take em to the dirt. Coon creek has just stapled the trap wire to a tree and caught coyotes and bobcats with a big fencing staple, id have never thought that a fence staple could hold a coyote. Two great channels.

I'm sure that works and it makes your set look all pretty and all that but it's really unnecessary for all that digging and your hole don't need to be but about two or three inches deep and you don't need but a drop of food about the size of the end of a qutip

@edwinleach74014 жыл бұрын
@@howardlovecraft750 Cheaper and humane. Trapping means being beaten to death or shot in the end. I saw trapping first hand as a kid growing up in Northern Illinois. Seeing a rabbit (un-intended target) trying desperately to get away ended my trapping. If you are not trapping for food for your table or protecting your stock it is wrong. Folks, this is just MY opinion so don't judge. All are entitled to their opinion. I do agree with DH, it is more humane to shoot.

People complaining about killing a coyote how they are gentle creatures. If coyotes were people theyd all be on death row. When you live on a farm and seen the things they do. Ripping calves from the mother mid labor. Bitting the tail end of deer for days just taking chunks of flesh till the animal dies from blood loss stress and exhaustion. This is the real world. Ive been a trqpper for almost 30 years I have a trapping channel BNO thats mostly water trapping snaring mink etc. So i deal with all the karens too.
@PheNom146611 ай бұрын
When I was a boy coyotes weren't really heavy in Ohio yet and you'd catch a lot of red and Gray fox. Now grays are scarce atleast in delaware, morrow, knox, Now its primarily yotes. From around 2002 they started popping up. Now I catch them literally in the middle of the city for nuisance calls.
@Wayne-yn7tw7 ай бұрын
Exactly I totally agree with you, my brother, dad and myself live on an old farm that we're trying to rebuild and we've encountered the coyote wolf hybrids, and nature is cruel. These boobs saying that stuff are people who are comfortable inside their little boxes known as houses, these people have zero experience living off the land so why be that surprised or taken back when they're nothing but house pet humans. It's like this, why have a battle of wits with unarmed opponents?

@@macmcatee611 whats the purpose of using it and the purpose of the sheeps wool in the hole?
@macmcatee6114 жыл бұрын
@@cwstewartjr1973 The purpose of the polly fill under the trap pan is to keep dirt from getting under the pan and stop the pan from dropping and setting the trap off when something steps on the pan. The sheep wool is to put your lure or bait on in the hole. First is that the smell is attractive to canines. Second it keeps the bait or lure out of the dirt. Third, it adds something of interest in the hole to encourage the canine to investigate what it sees and smells. The bacteria and moisture in the dirt will make the bait or lure deteriorate quickly, like in a couple of days it will no longer be effective. On a small wad of sheep wool it keeps it from being absorbed by the dirt. The bait or lure remains effective much longer. In NC we have a fairly mild winter, most years, we don't have the natural refrigeration going on to make things last longer and it just helps keep your set effective for a longer period of time.
