I worked on a KEM from 1972 to 1990. To my knowledge it was brand new in the mid to late 60s. I went from assisting on a moviola to assisting on a kem. It revolutionized the industry because it was modular with interchangeable video and audio components. It was much easier and faster than the moviola. The editor that I worked for was an early adopter. It cost $12,000 with 2 video and 3 sound modules. A moviola with 2 pictureheads and 2 sound heads cost about $3000. The French Connection, the film that revolutionized editing was what caught everyone’s attention and flatbeds were primarily adopted by New York editors. LA was years behind. Europe adopted flatbed editing about 10 years earlier with the Steenbeck. Which was gene on the film and extremely quiet compared to a moviola but it couldn’t transport the film very fast. Europe worked at a slower pace with 8 hour days. We were lucky to finish in 12. The union contracted 10 hour days, which would expand to 16 or 20 as deadlines approached. The unions didn’t keep them from killing us but they had to pay. One of my friends who worked on Star Wars bought a house in the Hollywood hills for cash when it was finished and completely renovated it. Seeing the KEM brought back a flood of memories. It wasn’t tge 30’s though. It was the late 60’s.

This is so cool! It really fascinates me learning about the history - especially from someone like you who lived and worked through the changes. My apologies in missing the date - I had just pulled that from a wiki page. My experience with flatbed editing is limited to a couple semesters in college with 16mm on a steenbeck - those had to be from the 70s is my guess. Honestly - if it wasn't for computers I probably wouldn't be as interested in editing but I really love the thought process that slowing down with work prints forces you to do. Do you miss the process of editing film with your physical hands? Have you ever done any splicing with one of the home movie super 8mm kits? That was my introduction to film editing.

2 years later I really appreciate this! I've never really studied different strategies to speed up my editing I just ended up doing this seperate timeline method but these tips can really speed that up. oh man I finally figured out this video, I was missing dragging and dropping the timeline into the source viewer. And the whole swap timeline and source viewer thing broke my brain until I realized the viewer on the right is the timeline viewer, viewer on the left is the source viewer. So when you drop a timeline into the source viewer, the dropped timeline BECOMES the source in the in+out+append\insert shortcuts! So you can view two timelines but one of them is acting as a source that's usable as a timeline.

As a long time Avid editor who recently switched to Resolve (and loving it), the fact that the source/viewer actually physically switches places seems unnecessarily confusing to me. None the less, I feel like this is the closest any other NLE has gotten to Avid's wonderful timeline to timeline abilities.

My workflow never changed ( until I met FCPX, which is why i couldn’t adapt) but it was a bit different. I would go through each reel, mark and pull selects into a selects reel. This way I could compare takes back to back to judge them side by side with no handles. Then you could for example hear all of the line readings in a row and judge the performances. So I would build strings, and pull a select string from those. Depending on the project I might build a super select string from them. At this point I would pull the pieces (with my mouse on avid) from 1 timeline into another. If I had to make changes or the producer or director wanted to see all the takes, they were lined up and I could easily make changes. Often these strings were built by an assistant, but if I had time I would do it myself because then I knew.what was there and I could leave the obviously bad ones behind. It was important for me to see the cut in my head and make it come to life.

Yeah timeline switching is not really a thought in FCPX - at least not for cutting your selects reels like you mentioned. They really want you to use the keywords/favorites and then you can do the continuous playback which is cool - but maybe not quite as smooth as even the source tape playback in Resolve's cut page. You are very wise - keep the comments going, I'm thankful you've found this channel.

The first time I watched this, I ran into a problem. 3 months later I'm happy to report I've found the solution. The problem was that switching timelines (F1) took almost 5 seconds, on my fully specced out Mac Studio M1 Ultra. So switching to a stringout, grab a clip, switch back to the main timeline and insert, took 10 seconds. That made the workflow impossible. I tried everything, disabling all plugins, everything, couldn't figure it out. Same on my M1 Max laptop. Now I cracked it. The offender was the iZotope Rx 9 components. Even if disabling them in Resolve, they still cause this lag when switching timelines. Need to actually delete the files from disk in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components and restart Resolve. Disadvantage is of course that can't use them in Resolve. Need to edit audio separately in RX 9 standalone app. If anyone can figure out a way to do both, would be great.

This is a huge discovery for me. I used to show two stacked timelines simultaneously, and copy and paste between them. The big problem with that approach was too little real estate to show two timelines. What a great video! Thank you!

Great stuff Chadwick! The Decompose clip option was new to me, thanks for that! Typically I cut out multiple TL then create a Master or Final TL and drag the other TLs into it - but as you pointed out, there are some limitations to editing or adding effects to Compound clips. That's great to hear. Hey one more thing you can do if you want to zoom in to see the waveforms in the viewer is click the 3 dot menu in the viewer, and check the box for show zoomed audio waveform. This is kind of resolve's way of dealing with that issue.

Very cool - I have noticed what I think is a bug in the current version where it won't un-nest on edit for a single clip. If you try this out can you let me know if this is the case for you too? Blackmagic support can't seem to replicate it.

This is great. It also gave me an idea for anyone who wants something similar while using the cut page. You could set a shortcut for creating a subclip. Organize those subclips into bins or smart bins and then edit the subclips from sourcetape. Note: I havent actually tried this it`s just an idea I had while watching this video.

Here I am, being quite happy with the source tape feature and now you are showing me something that makes me even more happy 😁 One thing I noticed is that you use all keyboard shortcuts and not the keys on the Speed Editor. I am wondering if this is your regular workflow ? If so, all you would need is a jog wheel/shuttle, these are more compact than the large Speed Editor.

Great tutorial, thank you! A similar method I've been using in VEGAS PRO by opening multiple instances, now I can apply to DaVinci Resolve. One thing I do extra for organizing material while editing documentaries, especially dialogue parts, is to rename timeline clips with the start of sentences or just a simple extract of the dialogue. So you can see the content of talking immediately on the timeline. I have assigned the F2 key for "Clip Attributes" (renaming clips). I love to add different clip colors by importance and then you can select and sort clips by color (you can do it all with keyboard shortcuts of course :))

This is great - almost as good as the media composer version - only thing it's missing is the different color playhead when viewing the timeline from the source viewer

Glad you see the similarities Matthew! Yeah I miss the green/blue playhead change. They other thing that is slightly different is in Avid you can keep cutting from the source timeline visible and not toggle or look back at the record side. On Resolve - because it's more acting like a record sequence when its visible you do actually need to toggle to go edit from one side to the next if that makes sense. (but you can get very quick with that toggle to 1 key press)

Just learning to use Resolve now and sorting/cutting my first lot of rushes. Not sure if it is a new option, but you can right click the bin and select “create new timeline using selected bin”. It isn’t going to be massively faster but seems useful than having to go into easy bin and select all clips.

I think I will likely revisit this in 2022 because i know the first time seeing it, that it's a lot to take in. The gist is to work from a timeline of favorites to a sequence that has your actually edited video. All with just the keyboard and no need to dig through bins for individual clips.

Awesome video. This was my favourite working method in avid media composer. And since smart tools weren't a thing then, you could fly through the timeline grabbing anywhere. You didn't use your speed editor in this video. But it's working perfectly with the timeline swapping.

I know frame.io integration, but first it's working only with studio, second only the last version of markes are shown in the timeline and third you can't burn them in.

Is there a way to insert the video only? When using say F11 or F12 to insert to video track 2, it will also insert audio to track 2. Is there a quick keyboard insert shortcut that will only do the video and not the audio?

Chadwick - your tutorials are just great. Coming from media composer I rely on seeing the source timeline. But resolve seems really limited in not having a patch panel to assign, say source audio track 4 to record track 5 while patching video up to V3. Do you have a fast way to do that kind of multi patching in resolve in this workflow? Thanks for any ideas.

Oh my gosh Steven - You have just nailed the biggest pain point in this source/record timeline editing method. I have not for the life of me figured a way to do that. As an editor, this is probably one of my top 2 or 3 things I would love to see added as a feature.

I will add one thing, that I'll work into a tutorial sometime this year is the auto select button does have an affect on your placement, but it's only really for moving clips up to higher tracks on an insert/overwrite and not a specific destination.

So the main thing I'm getting from about 6 tutorials I've watched (knowing avid/premiere) is the cut page is a waste of program memory. And also all the game changing tips are things that premiere already had and does better. DaVinci is seeming like a slightly smarter imovie on the editing side, but where it really shines is having great effects/color/music all together I guess

Excellent work again. trying to figure the best way to edit a feature film that has one camera, around 50 scenes. I have started doing each scene as a project with the movie title as a whole database. Then each project copied into a final project and the timeline of each project (scene) copied into the final project timeline. I don't want to bring over as a timeline clip as you lose all the separate audio tracks as the timeline approach only outputs a stereo track. But I envisage a right nightmare as there are 19 actors each will need need separate audio tracks and what is the best way to append at end of the clips and audio tracks without them going into the wrong tracks. I suppose I could link all the files in the timeline. Lock the tracks already in the main timeline, then the new clips will create new tracks when you bring them in. Or have I got this all wrong and there is a far more organised way? I have done about 3 tiny, tiny shorts before this. On this project I have been asked to do basically everything Direct, cameraman, editor, vfx, sound design colour delivery. The producer who wrote the script only wanted me to take this on as the other people he knew, he couldn't trust to be involved.

But just so I understand correctly: If id use stacked timelines and actually stack source-timeline and timeline-timeline above each other (with the litte button on the right that comes up when you hit the stacked timelines button), I really dont have any advantage from using swap timelines (ur F1) or swap viewer (q) right?

Sorry I misunderstood the question. They are very different. Q is just moving your selected window. Swap timeline and source actually makes it possible to directly 3 point edit one timeline into another. The key is dragging the selects timeline into the source viewer.

Upon swapping timelines and using the append to end command, it appends it to the end, but on track 2, not track 1. The only way I can get it to go to track 1 is to swap to the timeline, then hit end or arrow key, then append to end command. Are there any settings that I am missing? I turned off "selection follows playhead" which I thought was my issue, but that did not do anything. Thanks for the amazing content!

I know, if I want to get faster at editing, this tutorial is an important step in my learning; however, in setting up keyboard shortcuts, I'm already using several of the shortcuts that you suggest--like Ctrl +1--for other purposes. Now I know that I can substitute other shortcuts keys to do the same things that you are doing, but I can't seem to figure out the DaVinci nominclature, when using the keyboard editor. For instance, at 4:01 into the video, you say "Ctrl +1 take you to the folders" and you've outlined in yellow the area in the editing workspace. Now there is an icon on the far left called "a bin list", but I don't see anything in the keyboard editor for such a thing. The bottom line is that I'm lost as to where I need to look in the keyboard editor. Despite this, I think this was a fantastic tutorial!

Hi Keith - I just had to look it up - the actual command to jump to the bins area is called "media folders" in you keyboard customization area. "media clips" is what they call the area to the right. The resolve mac default is command 1 and command 2 respectively. I hope this helps. If you learn those 2, or whatever you'd like to set them to and then q to just between source and record - you'll be navigating super fast even without using the speed editor ;)

Hi Josh - I have a guess at what could be the problem. Did you double click both timelines so they are both essentially loaded into the right viewer? If so, close the one you want to edit from (your source). Now drag your source (selects stringout) sequence into the left source monitor - and now try command page up to see if that works. It should then "open it on on a tabbed timeline" if you have that option selected.

I am noticing buggy behavior when using the "compound clip" without the "decompose" option. Ideally I would like all the clips of that day (same scene) and put them in a time line where I can then put them in the main timeline. Several things happen though (1) the audio starts to produce a clicking artifact (2) the audio brought into the main timeline is always -5 db lower .. a bit at my wits end. I am wondering if compound clips are proving to intensive for my Mac Studio (odd) and as for the audio being lower, please anyone?

I watched this months ago and thought it was interesting but didn't fit my needs. However now I have a project where it could make sense-so that you for teaching this! One thing I found out is that any timeline you create will lock the clips to the resolution of that timeline, and carry that resolution forward to the edit. So if you don't want to potentially lose quality you might have to create the stringouts at the full resolution of the source footage, which can be cumbersome. Am I wrong about this? Or is there a way around it?

There are 2 ways to work with resolution. 1 is to always set it in the project manager this is what I do most of the time because it will by default change all of your timelines. You can also click on the individual timeline settings then uncheck use project settings and set those to your ideal resolution. Most of the time I edit UHD at HD then change back to UHD in the settings before going to export. No quality is lost

@@CreativeVideoTips To clarify what I mean, let me describe the test I did. On a string out timeline I reduced resolution to 256x256, then edited a clip from that into a 2K timeline. I wanted to see if it would pull from the original 4K file and resize according to the destination timeline, but what I found is that the clip was clearly reduced to 256 pixels. However I didn’t try exporting the file to see if it would regain the lost resolution.

F9 allows you to insert a clip without changing the last and next clip. It will just move everything forward?

Hi Jeff, yes F9, (insert) does exactly that. Think of it as someone butting into a line at Disney world - they just push everyone else out of the way, but nobody gets chopped off. For editing - clips always move toward the end of the timeline when you insert.

First I just want to say how much I love your videos. I've learned a lot from you and it's really helped speed up my edits. Second, I'm having an issue and I wonder if you know what's going on as I haven't been able to find an answer online. When I use this technique, the timeline just back one frame when the timeline is swapped from the source viewer. When I then insert the selected clip from the source monitor, one frame is spliced off every time. If I try to insert a clip between two others, a one-frame gap is created in the timeline. Append to end works fine for me with this method as the playhead position is inconsequential but otherwise it's unusable! The timeless gets crazy messy with single frame everywhere. Do you have any idea why this is happening? I did find a thread on the DR forums with another user experience the same issue but no resolution there. Thanks!!!

When I mark in and out points on one timeline the Append and Insert commands do not work to place the clip in another timeline. I can copy and paste the entire clip only. What am I missing here?

Usually this is because both timelines have been opened normally with the double click. Try closing all timelines. Then open one with double click. Then drag one from media pool to the left viewer. It should work now.

Hi Nathalia, it's actually called append at end and the shortcut by default is shift F12. Place on top is another great one which is just F12. I use place on top a lot to add audio tracks all the time. One more that there isn't a great equivalent in other apps is to swap clips in the timeline with command + shift and comma or period.

So a weird thing I noticed is that you cannot actually map the timeline zoom function to any key. The only way is to hold alt and scroll or use the slider with your mouse. Lame?I couldn't map it to say like the - and + keys which kinda sucks, wonder why it's like that.

I've been doing this for two days but today it decided to not work anymore i set in points and outpoints then f1 to other timeline i then press f10 and does nothing f9 doesn't work either. Funny thing is other timelines work but the main one doesn't.

9:37 That's something that I find really challenging. If you could make a video showing your workflow from importing the cards to the completed edit that would be awesome. The difficulty is that it's not immediately obvious which are the best clips, and subsections of clips. At the moment I'm making several passes of the source material and assigning clip colours to cull it down. It's okay, but not great. I'm definitely going to experiment with the method you outlined here.

Noted! This sounds like something that could be nice to do in a stream since it might not be as concise as I try to make the tutorials. In general it's first about watching everything. Dropping markers anytime something makes you react with any sort of emotion is a great thing to do on your first pass of watching. The rest comes from iteration though and practice. A lot of times its better to get something down on a timeline and you can always go replace shots later, but I do my best to not put things down I don't like because a lot of times they make it to the end inevitably. (unless of course you work for an ad agency in which case they will replace everything with the worst options in general) haha.

I'll look forward to the live stream. It will also be interesting to see to what extent you use the Speed Editor. While it has some nice features, I think the method in this video is in many ways better. Hopefully, they will add the ability to re-assign the keys on the SE. I feel that would improve its utility enormously.

Ah now it makes sence why avid people get angry when resolve dosen't have source patching XD, Deffonatly would be nice if the destinations rembers when you toggled the timelines at that tho, this is a very nice method and is intresting if anything deffonatly nice for the speed this + dynamic trimming would be nice :), it will be interesting to see if resolve adds source patching eventually -daria mentioned that the dev team knows it's an issue -
