Most of the professions ending with "-er" are male professions. Krankenpfleger means "male nurse" so it will be "der Krankenpfleger". Female professions usually end with "-in" e.g "Krankenpflegerin" so it will be "die Krankenpflegerin" for a female nurse. I hope this helps ☺️
