Thanks! I’ll discuss it in my next video, but usually it’s due to how the hand is being presented to the dog or trying to ask for too many steps too soon. When the dog does sit or go into a down, I just get them to walk forward with the lure and then go back into getting them to walk backwards. 😁

Have a 4 month GSD, taught 12 commands which he has done well on but really struggling with the walking backwards. He tends to sit or jump. Realise hand placement vital but any further elaboration from anyone would really help (aside from this vid).

This is great but my dog refuses to stand while doing it, she will shimming backwards while in a sit or down even if we started while standing. How do we get her to stand while backing up?

My pup is a one-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi and backing has been a challenge for him to be comfortable with. Walking into him tended to get him to "scrunch up" rather than walk smoothly backwards. So I worked with him between my legs (center position) and would walk backwards with him with fists closed facing backwards on either side of my body. That seemed to help with him developing a free walk backwards. I will now "advance" to getting him to back away from me and see how it goes. I have also been concerned about asking him to step up backwards onto a platform. I need to find/make a shorter one than the Coolaroo we use. I have been concerned about asking those short little legs on the long body to do too much too soon. Not sure if this is a viable concern.

You don't have to have the dog walk backwards onto a platform. It's just something I like to do to help the dog with rear-end awareness. :)

Any tips for getting the dogs to stand? All three of mine seem to be very confused. They sit immediately and don’t want to break the sit. They’ll roll onto the ground with no backward movement and seem to refuse to stand.

I just tried this with my 12 month lab and he's quickly following it. One question, he didn't move backward in straight line so it was difficuot to target him to his elevated bed. Any tips to help him move in straight line backward?

Try it against a wall, in a heal position or in between your legs looking up at you. This might help them to learn to walk backwards in a straighter line.

Great video. My dog has learned to back up on command. We are now adding it platforms to it. We mostly wanted to teach her an on the floor back when we started so we didn’t start by using a platform. Also closed hand versus open hand will be a game changer for us and our dog. Thanks

Use a solid leave it. Plus never let your dog get used to taking food from anyone but you. And also don’t let your dog approach people, or people approach your dog. My family will always keep our dog away from people cause we don’t want her to get fed by them or pet by them. Plus she has an allergy so we don’t let anyone but our family give her food.
