The 1972 East African Safari Rally starts awash with mud and the challenging conditions leads to several early retirements. The gruelling event is eventually won by Hannu Mikkola and co-driver Gunnar Palm in a MKI Escort RS 1600.

I still remember my older cousins waking up at 4AM to wait for the cars; we all had the newspaper pullout with driver names, route, and times. This was more than just a rally it was a national experience. My favorite drivers were Joginder Singh and Bjorn Waldegaard

Were you from South Africa? I cant imagine the feeling of earing the cars just coming, then seconds after seeing them in all their mighty power and speed coming at you.

Yes, when Australia had a big manufacturing industry, developed after WW2 so as to be self reliant, And a corresponding export market of such products. Sadly destroyed after the 1960's by successive "progressive woke" governments.@@shulestuff

These drivers are absolute lunatics incredible drivers A quote from ( evenflow ). My favorite is the 240Z cars , but the escorts seem more suited for this type of racing.

Very surprised none of them are wearing crash helmets!

They were not compulsory yet. Also the heat was unbearable in Africa.
