If anyone wants to learn more about East Germany, I recommend Beyond The Wall: East Germany 1949-1990, by Katja Hoyer. Like Angela Merkel, she grew up in East Germany, and as a historian offers a very detailed and balanced telling of life in the DDR. It's really recent too, just came out sometime earlier this year.

Remember the east germans never asked for annexation, just free travel so they could finally see their families again. Some did actually want total annexation, but that was at the cost of the majority of germans who did not. Some still adore the former state, in what is called Ostalgie.
