Man. East of Eden is my favorite book. This movie is nothing compared to it. Not even iota of message of Steinbeck's book got to the screen - notably no 'the one word'. It's truly shocking, that it even got published because of how progressive it was. If you haven't already, please read it. It's incredibly beautiful and full of philosophy.

12:40 That swing shot became one of Elia Kazan's most famous ever funnily enough. Weird indeed. I adore James Dean in East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, & Giant. Truly cinema's greatest acting loss up there with River Phoenix & Heath Ledger.

This makes 4 out of the five best actor nominated performances for 1955 to appear on the show. James Dean lost the award to Ernest Borgnine for his role in Marty (a favourite episode and movie) But shares his position with Frank Sinatra (Man with the Golden Arm) and Spencer Tracy (Bad Day at Black Rock) If we get to see James Cagney in "Love Me or Leave Me" instead of White Heat you'll have completed the on air best actor pentafecta!

I actually loved East of Eden so much the day I watched it I decided to go and watch Rebel Without a Cause and Giant in the days following. James Dean was amazing, even in the scene where he has bad old age makeup in Giant.

I love this film. The TV version has Jane Seymour playing the most evil character and does a wonderful job. The book is good as well, my favorite John Steinbeck novel.

Was hoping for a little love for the scenery in East of Eden. It was filmed in the town of Mendocino, quite close to where I live, and the town still looks pretty similar to how it looks in the movie. Also, thanks for recommending Hellzapoppin! That intro is manic meta movie amazingness.

Great episode! Craig, I hope that you'll watch "Giant". It's really great to see Dean play a character over a long span of time. Also, I have a couple of Seen-It's: "Make Way For Tomorrow"? It's Leo McCarey's film that he wished he won his Oscar for instead of "The Awful Truth." It's an incredibly melancholy film about old age and generational divide that was a big inspiration for Ozu's "Tokyo Story". "Bigger Than Life"? Nicholas Ray's film after "Rebel Without a Cause" where James Mason plays a father and husband who becomes addicted to prescription drugs for a chronic illness, and it's one of Mason's greatest performances. It's a great subversive fifties film and one of Ray's best.

The cinematography seems ahead of its time or at least uncommon for a typical 50s flick from what I can tell! Some strange and innovative more neo-film noir style, surreal dutch angles... pretty cool as far as aesthetics.

Regarding your discussion of James Dean's acting style, it really seems like he's Nicolas Cage, if Nicolas Cage knew exactly where the line of believability was and got on top of it without ever falling over onto the other side

One thing I found weird about this movie, is that everyone else seems like they're in the time period except James Dean. Maybe it's just hindsight, because he's so connected to the 50s it's hard to see him in another time period, but to me it felt like he was a time traveler from the 50s walking around in 1917.

After we watched this episode on Saturday, me and my partner went straight to watch Hellzapoppin' based on your glowing reviews! We had an amazing time, so thank you for that :D I just released a video about a 1976 Norwegian Christmas movie, and I hope you'd like to give it a watch. The movie doesn't have English subtitles anywhere besides the ones I added myself for my video, otherwise I would have just sent you a DVD. You guys are my main source for movie discussion, so I'd love to hear what you think, either about the video or the movie.
