@@Darskul Frank wasn't that hard. He was brave and didn't back down from anyone but he wouldn't have lasted 5 seconds in a fight with Phil, let alone Grant. Not to mention the 90's was Phil at his very best, physically. No soap character can beat that version of Phil apart from Grant.

@Nasti Chestikov - That's brilliant! I remember Sid Owen who played his son Ricky said something similar in an interview years ago. I've actually seen that happen in real life. Used to go to a rough bikers pub in my youth. They had bands on most Saturday nights. Now as you can imagine these were greasy blokes in leather and or denim, rough as you like. One evening this couple walk in, him in a suit, her in a long pale blue gown looking like they were going to the opera or something. Band stops, pub goes silent, everyone looks at them in a sort of "what the hell is this?" kind of way. They look around, and walk back out. Band starts up again, everyone carries on drinking and playing darts etc. funny as all hell.

The main reason its better this era of EE basically because in the 90s people spoke predominately with an English accent and with better articulation than nowadays, Londoners especially da yoots taaark laaark dat trying to sound black and embarrassing themselves at the same time. Plus the drama these days is superficial, the acting equivalent of sugar free drinks and vegan foods. Snowflake culture, resist before its too late. Mark my words.

For me there are two great eras of EastEnders: 1985-1995 and 2001-2006 The mid to late 90s was still okay, but the show has gone steadily downhill since 2007-09

The show has always been a bit moronic with the exception of Phil and Grant

I never remembered that Phil killed someone in the fire. He is a murderer by proxy. Phil telling someone to stop drinking is crazy in hindsight. The storylines are amazing and now I know why I loved it so much back in the day.

I think it being on twice a week was to it's merit, concise story telling and the actors were better cast. A lot of them now I tune in and it's like watching Hollyoaks Jnr
