I'm pretty sure there was a slight hint that Ted had shot someone before, an intruder at their old flat (I think this is going to be a storyline later on linked to their recent burglary at their new house) and so if he was arrested for the same crime he'd be dealt with more severely so his wife took the blame.

When they let Linda in because Jack said "It's her son." Ok, it was, but how did anyone know at that point it was Johnny who'd been shot? How did anyone know he was there? I think Keanu thought it was Riley, Chatham or Keegan, which would've been more likely, after all!

Just rethought this. Jack knew a boy needed help, and Joyce was apologising to Linda. Why would she apologise to Linda if she'd shot Riley, Chatham or Keegan? Jack put two and two together and worked out it could only be Johnny. (Of course, I know JOYCE didn't actually shoot anyone, but I'm just looking at it as Jack would have been!)
