Looking at this I see how unnecessary it was for EE to retcon the Kat and Zoe story. There's so much history between Kat and Zoe. It didn't need a twin let alone a secret twin. That said it rankles the show hasn't explored this more. Maybe Chris Clenshaw will be the man to do it.

No, this was way earlier. This was 2004. And Kat only said these things because she could see Zoe making all the same mistakes she did, and it terrified her. So she said horrible things she didn’t mean to make Zoe hate her.

I didn't like this when Kat disowned Zoe! It had hust gone to show she didn't know how to handle the difficulties in their relationship. She didn't know how to connect with Zoe on an emotional level. The dialogue is horrible. It's this row which; drives Zoe away.

Yeah, Kat isnt exactly good with emotional stuff. Kat was going through a bender and Alfie only barely managed to to talk sense into her. Before this happened, Zoe was going through a heartbreak and confiding in her drunken Mum, who gave her the wrong advice. Zoe of course wanting her Mum's approval followed her every move like a kitten, and Kat was looking at herself in a mirror. Breaking Zoe's heart was Kat's way of protecting her, so Zoe wouldnt go down the same road as her.

Episodes prior, Kat was going through a bender and Zoe, having gone through heartbreak (I believe from Anthony dumping her), confided in her. Kat of course gave her bad advice and Zoe was doing everything she could to impress her mother (such as poledancing), to the point she wanted to flee aborad to be with Kat on thier lonesome. It was Alfie that managed to knock sense into Kat, realising what she was doing was causing Zoe to emulate her and she didnt like it. Kat's plan effectively was to break Zoe's heart in order to protect her.

I know Zoe could be annoying a lot of the time, but Kat was a bit of a cow here. At least they sort of rekindled their relationship when Zoe left the following year after she confessed to Kat what happened to Den. Though I think they fell out again at some point later in life and are barely in contact these days.

No, she really wasn't. It's clear as day in this scene that Kat doesn't want to say any of the things she's saying to Zoe. She's doing it because she can see her daughter changing in concerning ways and it scares her. She's pushing her away in the hope that Zoe will come to her senses and find her way back to herself instead of making the same mistakes she made in life. Kat has always been an incredibly empathetic person but also extremely emotionally scarred because of her past. If anything, I think she's one of the most dynamic characters in the show to this day.
