It was a mistake killing Roy and Barry off, the writer Louise Berridge made many mistakes and was forced to quit. She got the lowest tv ratings Eastenders has ever had. Her career pretty much ended after that.

Once Roy passes on, Barry is left with Pat Butcher and the two of them don't get on at all. Barry thought that Pat was a gold digger and that she only married Roy for his money, even though she always had Barry and Natalie's best interests at hearts. Barry throws Pat out of the house and she is left with nothing, as Roy changed his will after her affair with Frank Butcher, so Barry gets Roy's estate and all of his money.
