I remember watching this, I was only 10 years old at the time, while Phil and Steve were doing the car chase I had to go and sit in the dining room as I couldn't watch the crash as it was too scary. Steve may not have been able to get out his side as there was no room but if the other door was stuck he could have smashed the window and climbed out. This was an epic episode and Steve Owen was a great character.

I know Martin Kemp left EastEnders because he had reached the end of his contract, but did they really have to kill Steve off? Why could they not have done a Dirty Den kind of thing? But then again, this was 2002, the year before Den came back from the dead. But still, Steve could have escaped from the car before it blew and then disappear somewhere. That way they could have left open the possibility of him returning at some point in the future.
