I lived in this area for a short time. The winds come most afternoons around 2pm. If you ever get out this way again, you've got to visit Sumpter, Granite and Cabel City.

My great grandmother came from Nebraska to Legrand in the back of a covered wagon, dragging her feet in the grass. She described the snow, never melting in Legrand. It just blows around until it wears out.

If you find yourself on Hwy 140 where it dips from Oregon down into Nevada, then back up into Oregon, there is a nice uncrowded campground with a nice warm (not hot) spring in the Nevada portion. It's called Virgin Valley Campground. Great hangout for a couple of days, and has a bath house with a shower in it.

I sort of blew through that part of Oregon in my early nomading days when I was in a rush to see everything right away. Spent a couple of days near Joseph, a night in La Grande, wallydocked in Pendelton. I need to go back now that I've slowed down. Thanks for reminding me.
