I'm Black but I grew up in East Harlem. In my day it was Spanish Harlem because it was predominantly Puerto Rican. My father purchased a building on 117th in 1st Avenue in the late 70s into the mid 80s where he ran a night club he called Dominos. Up the street from him was an Italian Pizza shop called Patsy's. I drove by there the other day and after all these years it's still there. I almost cried. My father, who did in 2007 always got me pizza from there.

What was the reletionship between Puerto Ricans and Italians back then? (I'm Italian from Italy)

@@bruttosporcoecattivo A lot of fighting, a lot of racism, a lot of gang activity. Italians were very racist towards Puerto Ricans.

@@henny6566 Really? What times are we talking about? Btw it's really sad to read about this. Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, I mean people from the Caribbeans and Latinos in general seem to be so kind and fun to hang around. Very disappointed to find out Italians were racist towards them. Are you Puerto Rican?
@henny65662 жыл бұрын
@@bruttosporcoecattivo Yes I am and by the time I was a kid the Italians were pretty much gone from the neighborhood. Just Latinos and blacks remained. But my parents and grandparents would tell me the stories of how Italians thought they were so much better and would start fights. I mean I kind of understand because they were there first. It was their neighborhoods and then the Puerto Ricans started moving in during the 50's and 60's. Dominicans came around the 80's. By the 90's when I was kid only very few Italians remained.

@@henny6566 Uhm...we're probably about the same age. I was a kid too during the 90's. Here in Italy we're facing a lot of immigration now. Many people from Africa, northern Africa, Asia, eastern Europe and so on are coming in. There's defenetly some racism going on, and I think it's inevitable when the situation it's so chaotic, but in my opinion it's more due to cultural and social differences than just a matter of race. Anyway the younger generation seem to care way less about race and bs like that. And even if the majority of African people here live in extremely poor conditions, the racism we see here it's nothing compared to what you see in the US, IMO.

Italian East Harlem needs a revival. 114th Street and Pleasant Avenue would be the place to start. The Italians and Albanians should just open up businesses there and reestablish Little Italy Harlem.
