What a truly enjoyable video. Great playing from a knowledgable guitarist who really knows his stuff - and has a warm personality.

Have had one for several years now. They are now a collectible guitar, discontinued. Eastman has a limited lifetime warranty too. Your vid helped me decide to work and save for one. It was the best value archtop on the market at the time.

Thank you Rich for your great video's. Had a left-handed Es 165 once. Sold it with pain in my stomach. But now I was searching for a new lefty and saw this video. Bought a left-handed Eastman AR371CE and it is amazing. As you said in your video. It is the price difference and a little bit of sound but not a lot. People. Try the Eastman. It is a great archtop.

Thanks for making these latest videos, Rich! I just bought the 372ce a year ago and I think it's great but I was not sure how well it holds up to a 175. I wouldn't expect it to be the same quality, especially given the price difference, but it's good to see a pro vouch for the quality of the Eastman. Also thanks for the tip of 'beefing up' the E and B string gauges. I am going to try that out tonight. Thanks again Rich!

Couple of things. First, thank you for your excellent instructional videos and wonderful playing. And second, I totally concur with you about these Eastman guitars. I was smitten the other day by the 403 CE and the 503 - remarkable quality for the cost and beautiful craftsmanship. Just a jazz guitar player and fan, but I appreciate your honesty, insights, and taste. Did I mention wonderful guitar playing?

Wow you sound great Rich! You've sold me on this Eastman. Sounds great for the money! I totally agree with you about putting a heavier high E string. 11's are too thin sounding. Do you use flatwound or roundwounds? I want to learn your "Dirty Dozen" chord shapes. I probably know a lot of them already. I'll search your videos. Glad I discovered you!

I think the pickup position is as other guitars. It's the neck that has less frets and is shorter I think you will find.
@AlexHand6 жыл бұрын
I tried these out recently. Design wise Eastman has done a really good job. The headstock isn't goofy like Epiphone, and the neck and body feel legit. The neck binding isn't as nice as Gibson's, which is weird because I think it's thicker. The strings that come on it are absurdly bright and twangy, totally inappropriate for the guitar, so I couldn't get a feel for the tone acoustically, but it felt brighter than expected. I notice you're picking right at the neck to counteract that. The finishes are pretty bright and glossy, but they have that new model that's more expensive with a matte finish, and I think it's better overall, but doesn't come in a 2 pickup version like the 372. A matte blonde version with aftermarket Gibson Classic 57 pups and some Thomastik strings would be a serious competitor to a Gibson 175.

Comparing this to the 403, which would you say is brighter? I’m an experienced guitar player but a newbie at Jazz and looking to get my first jazzbox. I’m looking for that L5 sound but those are unfortunately way above my pay grade (for now at least).

I have this one actually I have two of them.. I find they sound and play better without a pick.. LIke Joe Pass style.. The thud/wood sound is wonderful.. I love this guitar.. not the highest end, but a really fun player

Blondes deserve a more deco style pick guard, and not in plastic. Head could use a design below the name. And the Blonde could be a dark warmer color, like an aged color.
@polishbroadcast9 жыл бұрын
Eastman can be inconsistent with appointments. My 371 has a nice bound lacquered wood pickguard. I would guess they ditched those as too expensive considering how inexpensive they sell for. _Great_ guitars. I love mine.
@sclogse19 жыл бұрын
Only thing I have a problem with is how delicate they feel, and how fragile and delicate they seem. That may sound dumb, but they will show a ding very easily, so my bias is to buy older used heavier beasts like a 70's ES175...or Guild X-500 from the same era. They've picked up a beautiful patina, and are usually the hardest thing in the room. A ding doesn't seem to matter as much....

Gibson should be really nervous. These sound and play wonderfully for LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE of a 175. I'll have one in blonde, thank you. 'It's a great buy,' straight from the horse's mouth. Compare their 810 to an L-5...same story.

Yeah that's because they are made in China and the people who make them are paid pennies compared to the US guitar makers from whom the Chinese steal everything.
@johnq.public16895 жыл бұрын
Tone wise, the 371 is not close to a 175. The 371 has a very thin sound. The guitars may look similar but they are miles apart.

Hey Rich, quit trying to BS everyone with your shameless promotion of Chinese guitars. I don't care how good they are--- Eastman is made in China. Eastman is able to charge less because they have an endless pool of cheap Chinese workers. The Chinese have NEVER made an original guitar. All Chinese guitars are a direct steal and copies of great American guitars, end of story. If it doesn't bother you and you don't see how wrong this is, then that is too bad.

What you say has a lot of truth _ _ but it just doesn't seem that there are very many ( practically none ) 40's or 50' vintage archtops (US made) available these days . I'm completley satisfied with my Eastman AR403 (purchased 2013) Thanks Rich Severson , for your humble , ongoing commentary .
