Question: do you have to use a junction box like the Hubbub pedal in order to use the OBEL, or can you just use a stereo Y cable running out to the input and output of your pedal board along with a regular cable going out to the amp from the guitar? I believe you have illustrated using the OBEL system with a stereo Y cable on your website, but a few posts or comments I have come across from other people makes me wonder if the junction box actually is necessary. So yeah, is a junction box required or can you just run a stereo Y cable and still be able to utilize the OBEL as you show in the illustration on your website? I've just seen some conflicting info on that and am hoping for a bit of clarification there. I've got one of these bad boys sitting in a box at home and am just waiting for Christmas morning to be able to give her a spin, so I'd like to make sure I have gotten all of the proper gear beforehand to be able to use the OBEL right out of the box. By the way, having this Wolf sitting downstairs still in its unopened box and waiting for me is the most excited I have been for getting a new guitar in quite a long time. With 1970s Dead being my favorite era (along with Wolf being my favorite Jerry guitar), it almost kinda feels like I'm going to be meeting my favorite celebrity or something lol. After nearly ten years as a huge Grateful Dead fan and nearly 15 years as a guitarist, I cannot wait to give this guitar a full workout on Christmas day! All I can really say it thank you, Eastwood Guitars, for providing Dead Head guitarists like me with a way to have our own little bit of connection to Jerry and to be able to continue to honor his legacy with gear like this! Also, what is the name of the backing track used in this video? Love the key changes.

I mean this as no disrespect to RJ Ranquillo or his playing in the video or the designers at Eastwood, but the tones being played in the video are nothing at all like the tones Jerry played on Wolf or any of his guitars. It is impossible from this video to know if the guitar naturally produces tones similar to Jerry’s tones. I’m aware that the amp being played and the settings on the amp as well as pickups being selected and tone settings on the guitar, etc all affect the tone, but my point is none of those were tweaked to dial in the correct tones that should be the whole goal of this guitar. While the guitar looks very good, not knowing the full range of different sounds/tones it can generate keeps me from being genuinely interested in it.. Ideally it would be played through a Fender amp like a Deluxe Reverb, Twin Reverb, or even a Princeton Reverb with no effects and then again with an overdrive pedal and played in all pickup selections so the true tones of the guitar can be heard. That would be the best way to attract serious interest from those interested in how the guitar sounds as much as they are about how it looks.

2:37 and the following minute.. very Jerry to me
@bross635 жыл бұрын
First Last I certainly don’t want to appear argumentative, however that section you mentioned is, to my ears, very “fizzy” sounding in the highs, a sound never associated with Jerry’s tone which was very fat and round even when it was most bright (except in the latter years when he was playing that awful Bolt guitar which was very “ice pick” like). I’m not saying the guitar is incapable of producing Jerry-like tones, only that the guitar and amp are not set up properly to generate those tones in this video which keeps us from being able to appreciate how the guitar is actually capable of sounding when guitar and amp are properly dialed.
@Karl_Squell5 жыл бұрын
@@bross63 Interesting, I'd never describe Jerry's tone as very fat or round. Rather shrill and sometimes even sort of hollow.. cutting.. I've grown to like it a lot though so that's where we meet!
@bross635 жыл бұрын
First Last terms to describe guitar tones can sometimes fail to express one’s thoughts accurately as the same term can mean different things to different people. I agree that Jerry’s tone was very mid-hi and hi frequency oriented, and I believe I understand what you mean by “hollow” - that “woody” characteristic that he had in certain songs/settings. When I said Jerry’s tone was fat I meant that even when playing totally clean and even when playing with a brighter tone Jerry’s guitar never sounded thin or brittle. His tone was rich and singing and didn’t have the thinness that prevails through most of this video. Round probably wasn’t a good term to use because Jerry did have a high and mid frequency heavy tone much of the time as mentioned above, but he did still carry a strong bottom end and played at the top of the neck (nearest the nut/headstock) quite a bit other than when soloing. One other thing, the Dead went through many styles over their 30 years. Each of us has a favorite era of their music along with other eras we enjoy as well. While I enjoy their music from the beginning through the time Bruce Hornsby was with them (I still went to shows through April, 1995 but there were way more misses than hits and the sound overall wasn’t nearly what it was through 1990 and into 1991) my favorite era is 1971-1974 with 1975-1978 being my second favorite era. Because I don’t really care for most of the 1990’s and am particularly fond of the ‘70’s, both early and later, when I described Jerry’s tone my comments are weighted toward his tones during those periods. That said having seen many shows in the late ‘80’s through the spring of ‘95, I can say my comment about Jerry’s tone being fat and not thin hold true through the time Jerry was playing Tiger and even Rosebud. When Jerry switched to the bolt guitar his tone was defiantly more ice pick like to my ears. I appreciate your comments and the discussion. And I definitely agree that no matter what era of the Dead’s music each of us may gravitate toward personally, we all share the common bond of being drawn to something truly unique and very special both in music and culture/community.
@Karl_Squell5 жыл бұрын
@@bross63 Wish I could have seen them :) Very cool. Well, your ear is very tuned to the nuances of Jerry's tone over the decades, while I was considering the bigger picture, like the tone and playing in this video is really close to Jerry's when you compare it to, say, B.B. King, or Duane, those are fat and round in my ears. Hence I felt like your statement that the dude in this video sounds nothing at all like Jerry was way too strong and sort of disrespectful. I agree it should have been a twin reverb though :) I think so far my favourite Jerry tone is still with Alligator. It's remarkable really how much he sounds like himself on the most different types of guitars and settings though. That, to me, is the best example of "it's all in the fingers"!

@Gregory DeAngelis bruh Mayor slays on guitar. Your honestly just hating and don't even know it. Seen dead n co as well as all the incarnation and cover bands. When I closed my eyes this last tour i swear i forgot that it wasnt even jerry playing. If he wasnt as good as John K they wouldn't be still performing. In addition mayor just keeps getting better and better.

I’m sure it is a capable guitar and COULD serve as a nice platform for “jerry” stuff ... but this player and the tone stack aren’t gonna show that ... You want to sell to your target market, I suggest a Fender amp, an Earth Drive and a dead head on the guitar ...

Jerry wasn't even playing that guitar when this song was released lol. Eyes of the world or maybe something like that era would have been a better choice

the guitar, at least as demoed, doesn't capture the essence of the Jerry sound...not at all. guitar looks nice though

Why are you playing feel like a stranger on a guitar he never played that song on? He swapped to tiger in 1978. Feel Like a Stranger comes out in 1980. If you’re gonna demo a replica model at least do SOME research.

Chilllllllll. Chill out brah.

The demo is about the guitar itself, that's why.

He went back to Wolf a few times after he got Tiger. He played Stranger on it.

Dont you just hate the convenience of a floor pedal, and a single cable in your guitar? Why use your feet, which are doing nothing, when you could use your hands, which are already doing something? Our axe takes an already perfectly easy system, and makes it more complicated, with zero discernable advantage. We even take your mono signal, split it, and for some reason, we call it stereo. Buy now!!!
