I remember the first time I came across this channel, I saw an Asain man in a cowboy's hat and I said what's this. Fisherman's life and Philosophy D are good channels, but Outdoors Chef Life is BEST...imo

The dark part is the belly fat. I scrape all that off as well. It tastes a bit bitter. And I agree with your assessment. Jacksmelt is definitely far from the best tasting fish, but is still pretty yummy when fresh and properly cooked

I can usually catch over a dozen per trip but only keep 4-6 which I bake for the cat and dog. I have eaten it myself a few times marinated in oil.

I agree. I deep fry it in salt, pepper, and flour batter. Not the best tasting fish but I would gladly eat it in a pinch.

Taku, you and Jocelyn are two of the most down to earth youtubers. I'm betting you'll reach 500K this year. And on to 1 mil! Very nice catch and cooks. You really honor the food you harvest by preparing and cooking them so beautifully! Props! Hey, smelts are DELISH, but the smaller, the better tasting! Just plain fried. They're strong in the fish flavor but not smelly. People underestimate them but they crisp up and are great appetizers! AND, they are sustainable.

Sponsors are great as long as it doesn't take too much of your time. What you are doing without the sponsors... And I admit with less money, Is to take the time to show your sincerity, teach people to obey the law, and enlighten them with the way that the world chooses to cook. It's a great thing. Choose your sponsors carefully, I notice that when you start getting a lot of sponsors, the qualities of these vids goes down. Good luck .

YES! you should definitely travel with this catch and cook style youtube show. Maybe start with traveling all the coasts of North America, including Mexico in van or truck camper. Then head overseas. Your approach is honest and down to earth, try to keep it that way just change the locations. If you can try to keep your travels low cost and share how you did it with us other wannabe catch and cookers who would like to visit other destinations. For instance I'd love to camp the Baja fishing the whole way around it. Start in Ensenada in Nov, circle the peninsula and be back north for Spring time. There would many miles of surf fishing and free camping. How cool would that be.

Very similar style to Malay cooking. We would add soya sauce and lime juice to the fried onions and chillies. But put it as a dipping sauce by the side. The fish can be sprinkled with curcumin powder and rubbed with salt before frying. Eat with hot steamed rice.

I caught a nice sized smelt while crab fishing today. Bleed it, and gutted at the pier. Put on ice immediately. Cooked in a Japanese fish grill at home. My son, who doesn't seem to like anything but fish for his meals gobbled it up. I really don't understand why this is such an under-rated fish. They're delicious, and due to little demand.... highly sustainable.

Hello . Understand that like most fishermen you may be a little reluctant to disclose your location, but it's so pretty out there I was just kinda wondering where your at. I'm here in Northern California along highway one between Petaluma and Fort Bragg. Reminds me a lot of that area. Another great vid, thank you. The ocean is absolutely full of those jacksmelt, and yet, they're scorned. I think that's crazy considering the hunger problem in our country . It just takes education and a little bit of love to teach another man to fish, so that he can feed himself and his family. Thanks.

First off I just want to add that I have loved watching your videos. I just subscribed! In terms of coastal foraging on the East Coast, there's not much except in areas like Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. There you can find a variety of mollusks and seaweed. Though I think the seaweed on the West Coast is more tender and flavorful. I don’t know why, but many eastern varieties are thick and tough. I don’t know anyone who eats them. I’m blown away by the variety you have in SF, even in North SoCal. Much more options. But if your counting fishing, the east coast has bountiful options. In terms of Virginia to Cape Cod, I mostly catch Dusky and Sandbar Sharks from the beach, which I toss back. If you are lucky to hook a Shortfin Mako, they are the most fun. It took me 3 hours to bring one in at Cape Point in Cape Hatteras, NC. In terms of fish that I catch regularly from my boat, lots of Atlantic Cod, some Salmon, lots of Haddock, Flounder, Butterfish, some Black Sea Bass, Striped Bass, a few Blue Fin Tuna and King Mackerel. I’ve never caught a Spanish Mackerel but others seem to. If you’re ever in the VA/DC area and would like to go fishing on the Potomac in front of the sights or on the Chesapeake, I’d be more then happy to take you out. I have a 41’ Cigarette Top Fish that makes excursions speedy and comfortable. I’m not for hire, nor is this my business, it’s all just recreational. When I’m in LA which is frequent (I have a lot of business there)... I have a Donzi Cuddy Cruiser in Santa Monica, though its not a fishing boat I'm open to anything. However, I’d love to come up and forage with you sometime. I'd be happy to pay you too. Thanks for all the great videos!

I love how you talk about and go over the edible plants that are around, the different rules and regulations for fishing and foraging, and just try to educate and make sure everyone has a good experience. Also whenever you start cooking, the recipes you create look SO GOOD! I don’t know if you have a zero meetup policy, but just thought I’d throw that out there :) meeting you and doing a catch and cook with you in person would be pretty sick!
