Hi ! usually I use processed amadoo fungus or charcloth for the flint and steel. Today I tried the charred punk wood method and it works very weel. No music for this one, I think the awakening of all birds in the forest sound better for today :) Thanks for watching.

Tip for a circular tin with press on lids. Drill a hole through the side of the lid and the body of the tin. When making char line up the holes in each piece to vent. When storing char twist the lid so the holes do not line up.

+Oldtimer Lee Hi ! That's a very nice tip indeed ! much better than a hole with a tape on it like i did. When it's a screw on lid it doesn't work very weel but when I find a standard ''push lid'' i'm definitly trying that. Thanks for sharing. G

Great job. I love punk wood, so easy. You don't even need a tin to char. Just light it, let it burn a moment then put it in a tin to smother. To replenish just add fresh pieces to tin when you need it. Let it start to smolder then close tin....never ending. Great video. Thanks for posting.

Awesome video. I'm definitely going to try to make charred punk wood after seeing you light feather sticks with it, I usually use char cloth but haven't tried it with feather sticks so not sure if it would work. Also punk wood is probably more sustainable. It's really nice to hear the woodland birds again this time of year. atb

you dont need to bake it Just get the punk wood burning and put in teh tin stick the lid on the surface chars and is ready for the next use which will char the next layers . U used a push fit pellet tin and no hole. lucky managed to cut a solid plug of punk that fills the tin exactly as i have a massive Rotten standing tree in the garden . Chared the top with a blow torch and closed it up lights easily so far and should last a long time .... Will be interesting to see how well it works after not using for a while But in olden days this would be in constant use many times a day so will check it and fire it up before I go out needing it then use frequently to light all the fires needed for the day or week in the woods

This would've been a great vid if you had covered up all those nature sounds with some heavy metal music. ;-) I've found one of the easiest materials to catch fire with charred punk wood is just the frayed end of a piece of jute twine. Then I light a candle with that.
@bluesGs
@bluesGs 5 жыл бұрын
haha , when there's music people also complain :D yep if feathers light , almost every tinder will do as well. Once i almost got burnt to the face because the jute twine birds nest caught fire so hard it instantly made a 2 feet flame. Close call :)

Punk wood is always the best. When you run out of char cloth are you going tear your own clothes up to make more? Yeah it is good to have a bit of char cloth on you but it's always good not to rely on it unless absolutely necessary. I like to know where did you get your flint and steel? The Flint and still I have doesn't seem to spark much. I might not have a good piece of flint or a good steel striker.
@bluesGs
@bluesGs 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I totally agree with you with the cloth, and i just remake chard punk wood in the woods when the fire is going. I got my steel from the orchis association in france but i'm not sure they still sell stuff... You need a really sharp flint as well , i had beat up pieces and it was not working properly. check out on an old file (cleaned up from rust or patina) if it sparks more than your striker to see where the issue is (steel or flint)

@@bluesGs well I love in the US not France. I just got this flint and steel kit a couple months back and it doesn't spark much. Every video I see on KZbin of people using flint and steel theirs spark more an their first strike than mine does after a few strikes.

might be the technique , the flint or the steel. With a bad small piece of flint that wasn't sharp i had very poor sparks.
