These devices are equivalent to an ONT and their purpose is to identify your connection to the ISP's equipment. Different ISPs use different methods to do this but it's common to use a mac address or serial number of the unit. PON is a type of network which stands for Passive Optical Network which is a point to multi-point connection, meaning the fibre cable that comes to your home is shared between many other subscribers (generally less than 64 for most ISPs).
@OfficialiGamerАй бұрын
can the point to multi point increase latency? I'm assuming it does, as my ping times have not improved all that much over cable.
@rfitzgerald2004Ай бұрын
@@OfficialiGamer It shouldn't make a notable difference, if anything it may decrease slightly as long as the ISP isn't congested on their available bandwidth
@2dfxАй бұрын
@@OfficialiGamer no, the splitter is merely a prism. Speeds are generally affected on a congested splitter, ping times not so much.
@hariranormal5584Ай бұрын
@@2dfx a bit untrue. Look at how GPON works. the Frequencies remain the same for everyone, but it uses TDM which is legit time division as it suggestions and that definitely can add latency as you have to wait for your turn to speak data. It's very negligible often than not, but it exists. At least to the point many times ISP's can give you a more active connection instead of using XPON if you say want a Business line or something

My ONT is on the side of my house so I would have to get creative to do something like this. I use the dumb switch bypass method. I connect my AT&T router to the ONT with a switch in between and allow the AT&T router to boot. This allows the AT&T router to authenticate my connection with a baked in certificate. Then I unplug the AT&T router and boot up my PfSense box connected to the switch. My PfSense router is spoofing the MAC address of the AT&T router for IPv4 and there is an enterprise client ID I had to pull off the AT&T router with wireshark for IPv6 to work. What I get is a dual stacked internet connection with access to a full /60 IPv6 allocation and none of the NAT limits of the AT&T router. My IPs are also basically static, they have not changed in years so no need for a dynamic DNS service.

@chiefpoopydickАй бұрын
I get asked this question often. Bridge mode does "work" majority of the time i suggest not using bridge mode. What I've found is in bridge mode it only talks to 1 device. If your using wifi st the time it will cause all sorts of issues. If your plugged into it and the device your wanting to use for bridge is not then it will cause errors. The only way I've got bridge to work properly is to have the cx IT there with me. Plug his stuff in. I remote in turn off wifi, firewalls, set statics, then go into bridge mode selecting the devices mac address. Ultimately I'll request not using bridge as majority of the customers using a 320 for their services do not even have a need for bridge.
@frostbite199117 күн бұрын
ISP modem/routers suck at routing and have little to no firewall. Running it in bridge mode turns off level 2 routing and lets your router handle ALL the workload. For the average person an ISP modem/router is probably fine, but for those who have a homelab it's a no-go.

@donsfromnz6515 - Don't worry too much but Chorus (or whoever "owns" the physical network in your locale) will eventually physically pull all the copper network out. Depending on a planned schedule, it might take 3-5 years, but you should start looking for alternate internet connectivity options. I live in semi-rural Hawkes Bay and had an ADSL2+ connection very similar to yours, and I started to have an increasing number of connection disruptions (earlier this year). When I contacted my ISP, they recognised the problem as being in the copper network "last mile" to my residence and explained that they could not "fix" the issue as the diagnostic equipment required to do that had "failed" and was not going to be replaced (because why put in new equipment that could be redundant within a year (or 3)?). You might like to explore StarLink as an option or a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) if there is such an option near you. StarLink is very effective as long as you have a clear line of sight to the sky (i.e. not too many trees or hills blocking you out) but might be cost-prohibitive. A WISP is usually less pricey but can be a bit complicated to get going if there is no local infrastructure. PM me if you want to discuss more. Check my channel for details. I assume you mean RJ12 and just slipped when typing it. RJ11 (1 pair), RJ12 (2 pairs), and RJ45 (4 pairs) are the normal descriptors (unless someone has created a new connector of course 😎😁). It depends on the age of your ONT. The originally implemented A-PON (ATM Passive Optical Network) sometimes had RJ12 connectors to attach to the old-fashioned Plain Old Telephone System (POTS). The more modern G-PON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network), XG-PON (eXtended Gigabit PON), or E-PON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) networks are more likely to provide phone services via VOIP (Voice Over IP) hence @2dfx comment below, and these are usually RJ45 ethernet connected. Note: A-PONs are sometimes called B-PONs (Broadband PONs) nowadays.

8311 user here. You don't need to update (as in mandatory) and it's not a cat and mouse game. It's just convenient feature. The ONU modded mimic as best as it can a real device from AT&T. From them to prevent you from using it would most likely make them render all current device inoperative. What they can do on the other hand, is if you miss config something and hammer their network with error (and such) to possibly "ban" you. Highly unlikely though.

Hey, Taz here. I work for a Fiber / WISP provider. Most networks have automated monitors toe prevent intrusions from unauthorized devices. Worse case it, it wont ban him but will ban the device MAC that is preconfigured. They will then just re-issue a Fiber ONT and make you pay for a service call. Or, they could do worse. lol
@jfbeamАй бұрын
Yes, there are various avenues to prevent these ONT cloning hacks. When they originally rolled out XGS-PON, they did so "by accident". If people don't make a mess of things, T will not be motivated to do anything about it. As far as support, they can't see your RG and that's as far as it'll go. (truck roll, and/or mail you a new one.)
@jfbeamАй бұрын
@@BeardedTaz-Official The only way one would get banned would be by making a mess that requires the attention of an engineer. And "banned" would be a flag for the address / name in the billing system, and then a tech physically disconnects your fiber.

I have this same router, but I have a white box on my wall that the fiber goes into, then a ONT lan cable from it to my BGW router. I've tried connecting the USG directly to the ONT connection before but it didn't work, something about auth keys needs to talk to the fiber gateway?
@JeremyBrown-um6vmАй бұрын
Sounds like you have gpon, you need xpon for this to work. One of the guides he posted talked about it. Basically you need to call att and upgrade to 2gb service, then att will send out a tech to upgrade you to xpon and give you a 320 box. After the upgrade you can drop down to 1gig if you want, you don't have to keep the 2Gb service.

@Sdoc079824 күн бұрын
It’s not really needed on FiOS since Verizon lets you plug anything into the Ethernet port on the ONT. you need this for ATT since they do not allow you to use your own router and they’re now combining the router and ONT. on top of that, ATT’s CPE limits you to about 5k nat sessions before hanging.

Hi, you mentioned that the purpose of doing this workaround is because of the broken bridge mode on the OG ONT box from AT&T. I'm curious on what the exactly problem is, because I'm currently on another company's Fiber network and their ONT doesn't seem to have this issue as I can directly run an RJ45 ethernet cable from the ONT to my UDM Pro's WAN port and it just works...?
@cryptocray4184Ай бұрын
With the AT&T Fiber service when configured in bridge mode, using a UDM as an example, the UDM still sends traffic to the AT&T router before going out to the internet. With the solution shown here you eliminate the extra hop to the AT&T gear.

1. Running a "community" firmware which after doing some research I found derives from a nobody Chinese network device manufacturer is a big "No thank you!". 2. AT&T might sometimes push firmware updates or network configuration updates to the ONT they provided, now with this thing pretending to be the AT&T ONT, that won't work. 3. Keep in mind that you are sharing a single fiber line with multiple neighbors, if your custom ONT started to misbehave, it not only interrupts your internet, your neighbors' internet on the same fiber line will also be affected.
