Are you talking about the SCC S13 Silvia front with matte black rattle can finish? That was a huge inspiration to me. Instead of the Disco Potato I went with a Garrett GT25R small AR (sort of the precursor to the 2871). It was available from Phase2motortrend. My S13 is still a garage kept survivor car from those days!

Lovely video, Mike. Thanks for showing people the basics. A lot of people forget that a car doesnt need major upgrades in order to put a smile on your face and be reasonably quick. Past this point, you end up changing the characteristics of the car by needing to do drivetrain upgrades. Its kinda the point of no return and ruins the fun of an s-chassis. A lot of S-chassis' would still be on the road if people did not go past this point, and more importantly focused on traction and safety items like quality wheels/tires/brakes/suspension.

Hi Mike, quite interesting! I have been into S Chassis for well, 20 years and grew up following your pioneering work and came to similar conclusions about 10 years ago when I built my SR20... although I would like to offer some alternatives (not criticizing your choices mind!) In my experience, the 2867 has it over the 2863. On E85 I made 324rwkw (430rwhw) @ 6500 with an S15 engine. Could argue the dyno etc but it blew the standard S15 box in the classic 3rd-4th pull so its up there. I had a 2863 but the 2867 just has that little bit more oomph though I ran the smaller 0.63 rear housings perhaps the 0.86 2863 is better but g25/g30 certainly seem to be the future though. The Standard s13 exhaust manifold with a minor port does have its benefits (cheap and reliable!!) and I did not feel was a restriction, although the s14/15 variants loose a bit on runner 4 from EGR crap. I have cracked innumerable stainless steel exhaust manifolds that look identical to the ISR one (ie with the reinforcing) Id suggest dont waste your time and stay with the stock one or go proper steampipe The standard s15 intake saved money although the injectors and fuel rail were a pain with a spacer plate etc. s13 packaging is better but is really limiting for some reason. A 1 piece front+ dump pipe seems to be better and cheaper at least with local experience. Otherwise I run poncams/springs and a haltech platinum plug in, CD009 via the mazworx bellhousing but using the serialnine shifter. works good.
@motoiq Жыл бұрын
I agree with you that the 2867 is gonna make more power but I am not after more power, the transmission can't take very much so why bother is my thinking, I will take the smaller compressor wheel with less slip losses and faster response. I guess you found that out too! The engine is much, much happier with the 86 housing from a tuning standpoint, much further away from detonation. Don't agree with the manifold, this manifold will spool around 500 rpm quicker and again give more tuning headspace, plus it won't crack ever with track use. There are a lot of crappy SR20 manifolds for sale and this isnt one of them. The JWT cams will eat ponecams for lunch. I will make equivalent power with faster response, less boost and less overall thermal stress on the engine. Will go to the CD009 once the std trans dies. At that point, I will probably go through the motor, run a G-Series turbo and make another 100 hp.
@applesauceawesome Жыл бұрын
@@motoiq very intelligent and wise responses! Thanks man! I think my next move is g30 and a sixboost manifold so perhaps we would end up at a similar place..... If you were going VCT would you still suggest the JWT cams/springs? My brother ran BC cams/springs on a s15 engine....killed the vct in 2 trackdays...
@motoiq Жыл бұрын
Yes, they consistently produce more power and wider powerbands than any cams in the same duration category with less valve spring tension. G30 is a great choice.
@applesauceawesome Жыл бұрын
@@motoiq should have said. I'm not sure I noticed any loss in response with the 2867 (gen 2) compared to the 2863 (gen 1) but perhaps it's cams and manifolds and rear housings that are preventing getting power earlier with the 2863.... Anyway appreciate the video and the time you took to reply!

Thanks for very informative videos presented in a humble and and thorough fashion. About this SR build, I have a question when it comes to cam gears. I'm assuming that this base engine was non-VCT to begin with. In such case it makes sense to put adjustable cam gears in together with the aftermarket cams. But what if the engine was a VCT SR20? Your goal here is "no so much about to end" and more about response and torque. If you had a VCT SR20 to begin with, would to have kept the VCT or sacrificed it in favor of adjustable cam gears? And, further, if you would have retained the OEM VCT, would you see any advantage in having an adjustable cam gear on the exhaust cam? Or wouldn't that make any sense unless there is an adjustable gear in the intake so both can be adjusted together?
@motoiq9 ай бұрын
I would keep the VCT for sure. An adjustable exhaust gear can help, sometimes a lot with bigger cams.

@@motoiqThanks for the help. I am building an S14 SR20 and converting to the roller rocker with the shorter valves. Still working on the cam profile. It will be a street engine. The roller rocker is fairly rare compared to the slipper pad, so information on the roller rocker durability is fairly rare too. Thanks again for the great videos!
@motoiq8 ай бұрын
Roller rockers require a difficult to engineer inverted flank profile which is the main reason why you cant stick a decent cam in them, it is defiantly not worth the effort and will make less power under the curve. JWT is the only company to offer anything. JWT C series cams will greatly outpower with better powerbands any roller profile.
@springninja18 ай бұрын
The only off-the-shelf cam I can find for the RR engine is the JWT S3R which is a 262deg cam, slightly lazier than their slipper pad 260deg S3 cam. I'm already a bit too deep into this to back out haha so wish me luck! Thanks again for the great videos, keep up the fantastic work!
@motoiq8 ай бұрын
Don't try to designed your own cam, most aftermarket grinders cant even get the math right. You also need a Berco cam grinding machine with a small 4" or so wheel to grind this sort of profile. Most cam grinders use larger wheels for more speed and less problems with dimensions in production.

I'm still a bit curious as to how the .86AR turbine housing fares spool-wise. Didn't really think to imagine a large housing in the same sentence as fairly quick spool unless it's a twin-scroll like an OEM Evo turbo paired with its own manifold.
@motoiq Жыл бұрын
A .86 isnt a large housing for a 2 liter.

It would be helpful to link to some of these items. It seems that searching for some of these isn't just straight forward. Other than that, Love the videos tho.

Why not a Garet g25-550?

Snowball of a choice. And like twice the cost of the gtx2863. Great turbo but then you go vband and ewg which are pricey for this 'budget' build. They do have the t25 iwg housing, but that turbo also wants to be at like 400hp+ which you probably want to do bottom end stuff too. I've been flopping around a decision for my SR and the 2863 is really hard to beat all things considered.
@RadDadisRad Жыл бұрын
@@zacharykarr not all G25 turbos are EWG. They have a few IWG choices. They are the smaller A/R housings as well so better response with less maximum boost. But like you said they flow more air and they are physically larger than the gtx2863 turbo.

We talked about why in the video.

Thanks for your reply, I have an s14 sr in storage waiting for a 2024-2027 s-chassis. Artec vband bottom mount and g25 were on my wishlist. Will reconsider the gen2 @@zacharykarr

If you have a v-band manifold, the G series turbo is really good!

Objectively it is one of the best stock position manifolds on the market. We have run one on a drift car for years no problem.
