I’ve knit hundreds of hats (literally) since I took up knitting 3 years ago but always held off on cables because somehow the instructions did not “compute” but I made a resolution to myself to get over this idea and looked for a how-to video to walk me through it. Yours is the one that made me want to get started and I’m very pleased with the results! Thanks!
@whitneycorrigan30183 күн бұрын
I have loved learning to knit from your videos. They have been so helpful! I had some issues with sizing on the first run with this cable hat however. As a new knitter, I consulted with some more experienced folks and altered the pattern. For my head (21”) I cast on 104 stitches. I also reduced the ribbing on the hat band to 12 rounds total because I did not want it folded up, rather, laying flat like the model in the pattern. I did the hat side repeat for the women’s pattern. Although I think I could’ve done one less and it would’ve fit well too. Just wanted to give my feedback to this video in case anyone else is struggling like I was with sizing

The hat is lovely, and your tutorial is amazing. Great lighting and editing, your voice is pleasant, and your instructions are clear. I would like to add that what you are calling a slip slip knit is just a knit 2 together through the back loops. I only mention it because the inconsistency in terminology could cause new knitters to get the next pattern containing ssk wrong. A true ssk is slipped knitwise, giving a much different result. Again, not to take away from the excellent content you have created. You wouldn't have to redo the whole video if you just added a correction comment to the video description. Just a suggestion. Thanks again for the gift of this tutorial.

I found that I needed a circular needle one size (or even two sizes) smaller for the ribbing than for the cable body of the hat. In order to have a hat that doesn’t slid off, the ribbing needs to be a bit snugger than the body. The act of cabling causes the body of the hat to snug/tighten up therefore requiring a larger needle size than the rib section.
@nataszaptak1179 Жыл бұрын
That's what I've been wondering about, I've never made a hat like that before and I'm making this one as a gift. I've been looking at different patterns and they all say to switch needles, I was wondering why this one doesn't. Do you think I should restart the project?

If you use 112 stitches you should get the right circumference for a woman’s size head (with some negative ease) if you are getting the gauge in pattern which is at 22 stitches for 4”. The 144 stitch cast on will give you a 26” circumference, way too big! I am only getting 20 st. In 4” so I will go with lower number of 104 cast on. This is a really nicely done video though. Just an update on pattern numbers would be great.
@bhookedcrochet3 жыл бұрын
Hey Valerie! I can see where this would be confusing if you're only doing the math because what you're saying makes sense. But what you'll notice as you start making the hat is the stretch factor of a cable stitch like this is way smaller than most knit stitches. The extra room in the gauge is to account for that.
@valeriekoochin35693 жыл бұрын
@@bhookedcrochet Funny, I was just wondering about that last night! Thank you for your reply! I haven’t done cables before. I frogged my 1st and 2nd attempt with ribbing as size was too big and just went right over my head and around my neck. So did ribbing last night at the lower number, which I know works from my regular hats but I haven’t started the cables yet. I will do some increases to make up for the cables pulling and maybe size up my needles and hopefully that will be perfect. Well maybe not perfect, but hopefully with your video, a good first attempt! There were lots of comments about sizing being too big, but also lots of comments about how well this turned out, obviously what made me go to sleep pondering about this.
