It does not drop the ignition voltage, it drops the amperage. When it sees no resistance, it runs on a limp mode, until the voltage regulator can't take anymore, and then the regulator is fried. With the 470 ohm resistor, you are copying a signal that is about 95% of it maximum output. We run 500 ohm, and get 14.6 volts all day at the track. Great video BTW.

So I’ve got an issue with mine. When I talked to Holley, they recommended a 560ohm resistor (as that’s what the wiring plug they sell has) so I ordered a 560. Installed it and it’s running 15.0-15.5 volts and if I’m understands correctly, I need to have about a 600ohm resistor in there to lower the voltage, correct? Or should I order a 470 and see what happens. If I had a store local I would just get both but I have to order them.
@NightWrencher11 ай бұрын
Ive done this 5 times and every time it was with a 470 ohm resistor, zero issues. I'm 100% sure that the higher the resistor, the more voltage the alternator will put out.

The wiring diagram for for 74 GMC trucks shows a 1.35 ohm resistor on the wire connected the alternator. Will this work? Or do I need a new wire with the ohm resistor you suggest?

Youre going to want to run a new wire with the correct resistor or youll risk burning it up. The old resistors were used to prevent back feeding when shutting off the engine

@NightWrencher9 ай бұрын
I just saw this message, I think the 2 wire is PWM and cant be wired up like the 4 wire DR44. The good news is that I think you dont have to wire the 2 wires and just need to wire the big lug to the batter. Should default to 13.8volts

I m doing an LS swap on an obs , do I need a resister on the brown wire as well , or does the ecm take care of that , I have a standalone harness and the alternator has 2 wires brown and red
@NightWrencher2 жыл бұрын
This is specifically for a carbureted LS using a Smart Spark LS or MSD 6014. If you're doing an efi swap you can do the resistor mod, but the stock ECM should take care of it.

The alternator uses a 4 wire plug. If it has a 2 wire plug, its a PWM alternator and I don't think it'll work with this mod.

Can you run your cable directly to sarter from alt? And do the alt wire and starter wire connect to the same terminal on starter?
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can tie the big lug on the alternator directly to the big lug on the starter, but you wont want to run the fat wire from the battery, to the alternator and then to the starter because if the wire over heats, itll damage your alternator so you want to go directly alternator to starter and starter to battery. The thin wire on the starter is for the ign switch and the thin wire on the alternator is for the ignition switch with an inline resistor

@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
The 470 ohm resistor is specifically for the LS alternator. When using a 3 wire SBC alternator you have to do something similar except you have to run a wire to the battery light bulb and then from there to the alternator. The other wire goes back to get a feed signal like at the battery, and the big wire can go to the battery as well.
@jrsfunreview86093 жыл бұрын
@@NightWrencher battery light bulb or what other source could it be plugged in. I check for the battery light bulb and didn’t see it.
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
Some cars didnt have a battery bulb until later years and they used an external regulator to power the alternator but the 3 wire alt is internally regulated so you can pick up a light bulb socket and bulb, run the wires to to it like I mentioned before and install the socket somewhere you can see it. If the bulb goes out, the alternator will stop charging
@jrsfunreview86093 жыл бұрын
@@NightWrencher just came back from autozone and picked up the socket bulb which they only had a two wire socket bulb not a single wire. From the connected of the alternator I ran wire #1 to the socket light bulb and wire #2 from alternator right below to the bolt that has a 10gauge wire to the battery. Does that seem right. Just confused as to what to do now with the extra wire from the socket light bulb. Part #85802
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
The other wire from the socket goes to the ignition switch. So your ignition switch sends power to the bulb, then from the bulb it feeds the alternator through the exciter wire. #1 to the bulb, #2 to the big lug on the alternator
@erwins.70073 жыл бұрын
I did the same on my 76 k10 but still drawing alot of volts with the 470 resistor ?
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
The 470ohm resistor should keep voltage at a steady 13.5. Did you make sure to use a 470 and not a 470K? Also what voltage are you seeing?
@jrobles10193 жыл бұрын
@@NightWrencher I think what he is saying is you said your alternator does not want to see a full 12v signal coming into the brown wire on the 4prong connector. Well I’m getting the same issue he is and that a full 12v with the resistor in place when I have my switched power on.
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
You don't need to check the resistor wire for voltage, you need to check voltage at the battery. Off, battery should be around 12v and running should be around 13.5v. You might be able to see a drop in the field wire but it acts like AC because of the alternator so unless you have an o-scope, you just have to go off battery voltage.

How do you wire a aftermarket tach? What wire do u tap into👀
@NightWrencher4 жыл бұрын
Most aftermarket tachs run directly off a square wave signal used by HEI style ignition systems. So most aftermarket ignition boxes, hei modules and one wire distributors produce the same wave. An aftermarket tach with have at least 3 wires. 12v ign, signal wire from ign box, coil or distributor and a ground. If it has other features like lights or sounds, itll have more wires. An MSD 6014 like the one on my LS is hooked up directly to my tach without any special adapters because the tach is designed to work with the signal the MSD box is producing
