I am considering TCL (QM851G or C955 or C935) because of the "cheap" price and the relative good picture quality. But I always come back to Sony. I had a 55 inch X900H and the picture quality was just awesome, even with only 24 dimming zones. It is incredible how good Sony manages so fiew dimming zones. By the way, a direct picture quality comparison of the X95L, the Z9K (or Z9L, if it exists) and the Bravia 9; I would love to see it and hear your thoughts about them. I watch only movies and series in Remux quality. Greetings from Europe.

I purchased my first 4k TV earlier this year. A 55" TCL for our bedroom. It blew me away so much, it forced me to upgrade my main viewing space. Mind you I did hesitate to buy TCL when I was shelling out more $$. I replaced my 8 year old Samsung 1080 LED display. It worked fine for its entire life span (gifted to a relative and is going strong still). So, I upgraded to a new Samsung QN80C 75". Calibrated from best buy and I love it! But, I would seriously consider TCL for any upgrade in the future. Also love this channel. Look forward to it every week!

Some things about picture quality are a little more intangible and harder to verbalize, but Andrew did an amazing job articulating what I see as the difference when watching a Sony TV versus some of the competition. TVs are often more than their raw numbers/data would imply, and watching the X90L or similar Sony product versus the competition is just a noticably more enjoyable experience. The color temperature and balance are so much more artistically appreciable and pleasant to the eye for me versus all other TVs I have seen.

@mattrc77Ай бұрын
VA panels for an LCD TV have great blacks, high contrast and fast refresh rates for gaming that's why they use them, IPS panels may have good viewing angles and colors but they're not so great with contrast and they have a slower refresh rate than VA.
@LEGOKRASSАй бұрын
I had an LG, mid range model, it had an IPS panel. Good viewing angles? Not in the slightest! Even a milimeter moving away from the center washed the dark gray (IPS´s "blacks") out to a very bright gray tone! So if you had for example a picture with some black zones in it, it was just a caleidoscope of different gray tones. Even the black bars up and down in cinemascope movies, they were in the middle gray, and right and left they were almost milky white! And even colors were washed out from an off angle. IPS? NEVER AGAIN.

Kristi mentions this being good for people with eye issues. I’m disabled, so I figure you might be interested in how I care about my display haha WELL. When I hear brightness, it means nothing to me. I heard stuff about brightness and blue light and those during the main review if I recall correctly? Those things both ruin me. I find it odd when people prefer blue, I understand people wanting a bright display though. For someone with my weird vision condition? How you can see detail well after lowering the backlight would be interesting. I haven’t worried much about visuals since my vision went, but I’d assume there’s an impact on the way colors are rendered when the elements inside aren’t at higher levels of output as well. Different color modes, settings, and options, available to me are important. These are things someone who’s blinded by bright light, strained by blue light cares about. How dim while viewable can it get? How much can you tailor the color of the image? I would say how does it feel in the eye, but you guys just won’t strain like me haha I tend to use a TVs cinema settings and low backlight. When I say low, I mean LOW. Cuts the blue, removes eye stain. Sometimes these settings feel good, sometimes they don’t. It’s not the same for every display. I know it’s not accurate, that’s okay. I honestly think it looks “nicer/better” much of the time anyways. There’s less of a harshness. @23:00 you touch on color temperature. Which if cinema settings don’t work for me, is where I’d go first. Should not do anything to the green, I assume you misspoke. You said tint after, so obviously you know that’s where green and magenta should lie. Cinema I feel will tend to lean green. I don’t remember at this point honestly. I haven’t cared much about cameras and displays for years haha I will say, I live in a darker environment than most people. I darken even further when I want to WATCH my TV rather than have it in the background. I have smart-bulbs, blinds, shades, and tailor my light to my eyes because I cannot be exposed to direct sunlight without being literally blinded and my eyes just stop functioning. Just thought you guys might be interested in how like, someone who’s disabled by their vision handles viewing haha

Happy Friday Andrew & Kristi. One question I have, what are your impressions about the potential longevity of these new TCL TVs. Several years ago, we had the TCL R617, which at the time had pretty solid reviews. We only got a little over 26 months out of that TV before the control board failed and we had bright green vertical lines on the display. My In-laws had a TCL R625, and that TV only lasted a little over 3 years. Just curious if you think their quality control and longevity has improved since 2018-2019

At some point in the early 2000s, I overheard so many complaints about letterboxing (2.35:1 on a 16.9 screen or 4:3 screen) and pillarboxing (4:3 content on a 16:9 screen) it drove me nuts. Strange beliefs about either "wasting money on pixels that aren't being used" or possibly causing burn-in damage either way. It was so weird.

@@billelliott3507 Spoiled by the VHS pan-and-scan days. What was truly strange was that when Warner Brothers released the box set of Kubrick, everything after 2001 was released as the full-frame (4:3 version). Kubrick, after 2001, definitely shot with 1.85:1 or 1.66:1 ratios in mind, but shot it in such a way that the movies could appear on TV without getting cropped. Instead, the films could be shown on TV or put on video without the matte, so the full frame is visible. The DVDs were released as full-frame versions as if that were how Kubrick intended. The blu-rays, however, are done correctly according to Kubrick's written projection notes.

I had the series 6 for about 4 or 5 years and q7 for slightly over a year with 0 issues. If you are not a last 10% chaser I don't think you can get a better tv than a upper tier TCL ( Q6, q7. M8). The lower tier S3 which my in-laws bought did die after 3 years and the S5 I have no experience with is a lower tier model s well. Last 10% chasers will not not recommend TCL though for obvious reasons. For the majority of users that are perfectly fine with 90% of the best should be really happy with upper tier TCL TV's. For price and features, esp for those that have a clue on how to set the settings and correct the out of the box color, I don't think you can go wrong with an upper tier TCL tv.

Key tip with dialing back the "Colour" setting: do it at night before you go to bed. Then actually go to bed and see how it feels when you come back to it the next day. What you *don't* want to do is force yourself to experience desaturation after viewing for hours: just about anybody will decide the adjusted picture looks "worse."

I have paragraphs full of reasons) is that you should get the biggest one that you can, and sit as close as is comfortable so that you get the most cinematic view. THEN ... put some shit in front of it, and don't let it be the only thing you do.

On my 75" QM850G (2023), this has the least amount of DSE I've ever seen on an LCD-based panel. My panel is super clean. Almost no uniformity issues when I go through grey screens. I did go through some grey slides on KZbin when I was calibrating my set (not really calibrating, but going through the spears and munsil disc as best I could) and I noticed some uniformity issues right in the middle of the screen on certain grey slides. Then I realized it wasn't uniformity.....it was viewing angle. The "dark spot" in the center of the tv moved along with me when I moved my head from side to side. Though, so far this viewing angle issue has only even shown up in those grey slides.

Hi guys. Great discussion. Just a comment with regard to TCL build quality and longevity vs the big boy brands. I had an LG C1 OLED that had its panel fail a little over two years into ownership. Also know people with Samsung TVs that have had serious problems. I have an older Hisense with zero problems. No guarantee going with one of the mainstream brands is going to be trouble free vs the "off brands".

I have a Sony A9G OLED, still going strong - still flawless. ....knocking on wood I didn't just jinx our TV. We've had two problematic Samsung Plasma TVs where the HDMI ports started failing. We're down to one useful HDMI input port on our current Sammy plasma, so had to swap our old Denon AVR for a newer one that could handle HDMI switching internally. Next TV will be another Sony OLED.

@@craigjohnchronicles2504 Just a heads up, Sony doesn't actually produce their own OLED panels from what I understand. I believe LG used to supply them and now they source them from Samsung if I'm correct. Of course Sony does its own thing in terms of software and stuff but they source the raw panels from others.

15:33 In my experience with higher end LCD TVs from LG, none them last a day more than 2 years. The display tech now just doesn't last. And I i have seen that in the last decade. Their CRT TVs just lasted way more, I had one for almost 15 years had no problems. As companies go for thinner and slimmer designa every year, especially LG with their G series, the cooling is just not a consideration, nearly enough.

@Andrewrobinsonreviews re: NLS. I definitely appreciate your pain (as a creator) of someone altering your work in terms of what you want the view to experience.. The problem though is that "Home" Theater (IMO) has surpassed Traditional Theaters. Thus creators need to make content with that in mind - that the VAST majority of their viewers are going to be viewing their work on a 65"(?) 16x9 aspect ratio screen. Thus, if they continue to make it scope (for that additional effect enveloping the angles that our eyes can see) they can't expect the viewer to then lose 33% of the viewing area!! That loss of emersion itself is a change from the director's intent of what he/she was trying to accomplish by filling the side viewing angles via 2.35. All the more so that many are now buying 85, 98", and larger. Of course, ultimately, there needs to be one standard AR. i.e. this is a legacy issue dating back to a time when movies where pretty much soley viewed in theaters. The fact that this is an issue is kind of crazy when you think about it.

Been on the Dolby Vision train for several years now and I'm just not buying it. HDR10 provides a nearly identical experience 99% of the time. The only reason Dolby Vision has going for it over HDR10+ is brand recognition. Would much prefer the open source method of HDR10 than Dolby.
@andrewrobinsonreviews2 ай бұрын
Oh, I agree. I appreciate the open-source nature of HDR10/HDR10+, but if the content isn't taking full advantage of it, that's a problem. Studios use DV because it has customer/consumer recognition. That doesn't make it better or best, but the adoption rate cannot be ignored.
@brecwinchester84872 ай бұрын
@andrewrobinsonreviews it's the same with atmos vs dts-x. Atmos is more common and better known, but dts-x blows it out of the water with the dynamic range and bass impact. Which is why I would assume that true imax content is in dts-x.
@DrakonR2 ай бұрын
@@brecwinchester8487 I've come to a similar conclusion. DTS has been a much better audio experience in many cases.
@TokeBoisen2 ай бұрын
@@brecwinchester8487both DTS:X and Atmos are lossless formats with the same general bitdepth and samplerate specs, and for consumer formats they have the same general object count limits as well. The format is the least of the differences you could point to for the way you experience movies using them. Much more likely it's a mastering decision or the way your processor/AVR decodes the formats that matter.

Thanks for the information bro. But again I have few earlier on blu rays that I can watch the content with the picture covering the entire screen, without it being cutoff and degrading the picture quality. I just don't understand why they stopped doing this. There should be options. You shouldn't have to force the creators intent on people, give options variety. For example. Surround sound systems, or soundbars have different modes on them and different EQ settings. They don't force you to listen as the creator intended right? You have direct or standard mode which is the so called creators intent, which is the most accurate representation I suppose, but then you have other modes like movie mode, game mode, adaptive mode all of which adds to the experience. All I'm saying is give options, they did give us options before.

One element which may assist projectors with limited light output is the VR’s ability to produce seemingly brighter Specular Highlights, but on a television….. Nah not worth it

Great review. Now, you are comparing a mid-level Sony (X90L) with a top of the line TCL (QM8) ... if TCL is sweating to get close to the X90L, then that's not saying much, is it? I'm not saying that the X90L is bad, but it's not the best Sony has put out. I've seen the QM8 at a Best Buy store and it looks amazing. I also saw the LG 98QNED89TUA and it looked freaking amazing! I bought an LG NanoCell after one of your reviews :-)
@pieflies2 ай бұрын
The fact they are not competing with the same level of the Sony lineup is not the point. The point is that the TCL is competitive with a Sony model that is more expensive than it. In some sizes and countries it’s significantly cheaper, so for a lot of people even if it’s slightly less good in some regards, it’s fine if you’re paying half the price and you don’t have unlimited TV budget. TCL also does have a higher end model in China that isn’t sold worldwide yet, so they’ve got more to come in future.

On the forums multiple 851g owners report an issue with audio sync in 24hz content from an external source - blu ray/apple tv ect. No issues for you guys i assume?
@andrewrobinsonreviews2 ай бұрын
We didn't encounter sync issues apart from an instance or two when watching Netflix streaming, but this is a Netflix issue not TCL because we've experienced it with TCL and Sony.
@TheMailerDaemonLives2 ай бұрын
@@andrewrobinsonreviewsI believe this issue has to do with frame rate matching personally. I get an obvious sync issue on Apple TV content on the ATV4K in 24hz. Interestingly, switching to game mode solves the audio sync issue. On the QM851G when you let the ATV run with no frame rate matching, 60hz is fine. No audio sync in that case. Why would 24hz be causing that problem? I don’t like pulldown straight up, judder and stutter are worse when forcing 24hz up to 60hz.

Hey Andrew! Long , long time no chat! I realise this is a tv review. But something has been weighing ... heavily on my mind, and I need to say it now, so I don't forget! We hear the over used word of..... audiophile all the time. My father always used to tell me, unless you, yourself build every piece of equipment in your system, your not an audiophile, your an audio enthusiast! The ones that crack me up the most? If an individual can simply go in and spend 500k on a system, vs. the person who can only spend 10k. Does that make that person an audiophile? Absolutely not! (IMO) Andrew Jones said it best ..... a true audiophile is one who can discern the sound difference between a $300.00 and $400.00 set of speakers. Anyways .. what I'm getting at is, what is your take of what an audiophile truly is? As always, thanks for such entertaining videos!

I am also against messing with the TV aspect ratio, Andrew. At least MADVR is trying to make it look as good as possible. I hate going to relatives and seeing them watching SD on an HD TV and using zoom to fill the picture. There isn't much that looks worse than that that... short fat fuzzy people with large faces on screen. A field goal appears to have the football travel super fast off his foot, slows in the middle, then zooms by the goal post, all the while the football looks stretched even more oblong at the beginning and end. Sorry for the rant. Just a pet peeve.
