Easy DIY Coon & Hog Proof Deer Feeder

This DIY hanging deer feeder is easily built with few tools and for much cheaper than store bought feeders of equal quality while protecting your investment from marauding hogs and menacing coons. This feeder design should stop all damage to your feeder, feeder mechanism and the emptying out your corn or protein pellets prematurely by these pesky critters. It may even work in areas with black bears if hung high enough. This type of feeder can also be hung from a large tree branch or leaning tree the closer to the tree the more likelihood it will be susceptible to the coons.

Thanks for sharing this. Your design is much simpler and better than what I’ve seen others do. Theirs is a little more complicated than yours. I like the 2x4 and eye bolt configuration. I plan on making me one like that. We have black bears and this is just the ticket.

Sorry for the delay Buddy. The solar panels I use are ASF (All Season Feeders) 12 volt solar panel. You can order them online for $39.99. Hope that helps!

@@lodollar23 I use All Seasons 12 volt feeder mechanisms. They have served me well and I have had them for years without problems. They have them on Amazon. The solar panel is Boss Buck 12 volt solar panel also on Amazon. There are a lot cheaper options but these work really well for me. Hope that helps!

Have any coons or squirrels tried climbing the trees, going across the chain to the feeder, dropping to it, and reaching down from the top to get at the corn at the bottom?

Squirrels do but no coons. The squirrels drop down onto the solar panel then climb from there to the feeder plate. Only way around that is to install a drop down spinner plate that only opens with centrifugal force.

The solar panel charges a 12 volt battery that operates the feeder motor. There is a preset timer in the feeder mechanism that is wired to the motor. The timer allows you to set the time of day and the length of feeding time that you would like to feed. You fill the barrel with the feed (I use corn) gravity feeds the corn down onto the spinner plate that is attached to the feeder motor. Hope that helps!

I used an old logging chain I found for the long piece between the trees. The chains on the barrel are just pieces I bought at the hardware store. The barrel holds about 6 x 50 lbs bags of corn so 300 lbs is not much weight for any decent chain. Sorry I don’t remember the exact size for you.
