Thank you for the great video😊 I made my first one tonight. I think I have a new gift idea for a few family members. I used some 4 oz veg-tan and oiled it up. It will patina over the next several years and it will be worth hanging on to!😊 I used a couple of old 1800’s tools I have to finish it. Also, one nice thing about “taking the extra time to open the straps” is simply, it’s harder to spend money😂

this is a great style for a flint'n'steel type fire kit!! oughta make a pdf of the pattern, it wasn't super easy to transpose all of the measurements but i got it done; will report back after completion

I love the fact that this pattern will be modified and made into a fire kit. I’ve made a few tobacco pouch’s and repair kits from this concept as well. Thanks J. The one glue i did read about is spauldings glue, developed in the 1850’s and was very popular in the time, it was one of the first mass produced glues, can’t find what it was made from though

Traditional harness making didn’t use glues very often. The tanneries produced hide glue and it was apparently used in the making of large belts for industry. These would have been long belts that would connect lathes and drills to drive shafts run commonly by small steam engines before the advent of electric motors. These belts required ‘scarf‘ joints because of their length. These joints were tapered down by skiving down the thickness to thin edges so that when the pieces are glued and stitched they will maintain a uniform thickness when running. Belt making, like this, was one of the skilled leather trades. The problem with hide glue is that it dries stiff which works fine on wood but not so much for leather that is going to be flexed. Skilled harness or bag makers sewed a single awl punch and needle stitch at a time so glue was not necessary. Pricking irons were used in the 19th century but only to mark where the stitches were to be placed. Modern contact cements are a late 19th and 20th century invention
