Great helpful video Roger. We needed to move our loft hatch location and were looking for a solution. So following your tutorial, and a bit of further research about making a new loft access whole, yesterday I made a new access whole and then fitted a Keylite 700 x 1200 ladder. Successful DIY job sorted. All in a day. Thank you Roger 👍

Had two of these 1200 x 700 installed by my joiner who is thrilled with them and is going to start using them with other clients. I was worried that being a fairly fit but hefty guy (19st) that the ladders just wouldn't hold me ...they do! and without flexing or creaking too. Roger, I always look forward to your videos , thanks again for an honest review . keep up the good work.

I really like this loft ladder and installed it myself about 2 years ago. My only little gripe is that the hatch opens a bit too far meaning the loft ladder isn’t straight when in the open position. It has a curve to it and the treads are slightly leaning forward. The steps arnt cut too short which you might think. Has anyone else had this issue?

Who hates doing loft hatches? I always seem to get ceilings that were made in the dark ages and end up doing something drastic like boarding & skimming the whole landing just to get the loft hatch looking nice...
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 8 жыл бұрын
Yes I know what you mean. I had to take care not to disturb the lath and plaster too much. You can see my patch on the left. The decorators re-papered that bit of ceiling and it looks a treat but I did say at the beginning that you need someone with experience to do the cutting out. Fitting the ladder is really easy though and if you have a hatch you can probably do a straight job. I made life more difficult for myself by going large.

I was going to buy one based on this video but unfortunately Keylite don't seem to make a ladder over 3.2m. Other makes that look exactly the same that also sell an extension kit, perhaps Keylite should look into that, I had to buy something else.

Hi Roger. Help! In your plumbing visits have you come across a 'loft' ladder that opens out of a vertical rather than horizontal opening? I could do with one for my tank room which is a half storey high space directly above the bathroom which opens into a one and a half storey hall. Bob.
@SkillBuilder

Yes it is called a scissor ladder. I haven't seen one for a while. Telescopic ladders also do the same thing but I can't see how you would attach it.

@JustMeTalking
@JustMeTalking Жыл бұрын
My loft hatch was 565mm and I chose the Oman Polar Deluxe loft hatch with ladder. U Rating of 0.36 which is better than this one in the video. The Oman Polar has 86mm insulation.

Isn't that box/frame hanging well below the ceiling. How do you dealing with that?
@chriskeenan1
@chriskeenan1 4 жыл бұрын
It’s actually flush with the ceiling. Just an optical illusion on the video. I just fitted one and it was as easy as this guy says it is. I have a new build, and the hatch was too small, so I had to take the old hatch out- one of those plastic beasties, and cut out the plasterboard and do wee bit of jiggery-pokery with the joists. I did it from start to finish on my own. Only trouble I had was I ordered the wrong length of ladder - it was longer than it needed to be. I just cut it to length like he does in the video, and instead of just having a wee bit left over, I had a longer bit but it still looks great.

No, once they have been cut you need a steel or something like that. I am sure you could screw plates onto the roof trusses but it would never get signed off

Looks a bit too vertical to me, could do with lowering a bit to allow it come further toward the user and be at a better angle.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 5 жыл бұрын
The hatch mechanism dictates the angle and the feet are cut to suit. If you reduce the angle it makes it harder to get anything, such as suitcases through the hatch.

I have jus received this ladder. And every seems ok. Accept i have put it up. And it is. So stiff to try and open. So i took it back out. And ive literally got to really force and price it to open it fully. I rang keylite. And they said. They do tend to tighten the springs quite tight. For couriering etc. But its that tight. I cant pull it down with the bar. I have to reach and drag it down and push it open. Wer as in your video it comes down with such ease. Any ideas. Thanks.

I own a company that installs 5 to 10 of these type of ladders a week, for me the best ladder on the market is FACRO you can also buy a trim ready cut from screw fix that will finish the job off nicely if your miter cuts aren't the best this type of ladder is more superior to the aluminum drop down ladder

@thetessellater9163

I agree, he did not show that, but he did say that the existing hatch frame did not make full use of the available space, and it looked to me like he only had to remove it and trim the loft flooring back, as the structural timbers were wide enough. Perhaps.

Dovetailed? Do you mean half housing joint perhaps? Dovetail joints are for corners. Enjoyed the vid though with the mad staring eyes lol
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 5 жыл бұрын
hi Pablo You are right to question this point but they are dovetailed . With modern woodworking machinery it is easy enough to cut a blind housing from the bask of the string and then feed in the treads with their dovetailed ends. If makes for a tight joint and no need for screws.

The problem you have is air leakage around the trap. It needs a seal which is simple draught excluder. I am guessing you have a ventilated roof space that pulls moisture up.
