I've watched a few videos about distilling and my advice is this, since there are some things lighter than water in the water, hydro carbons, which evaporate with the water: since they will evaporate first, let the still steam for a minute before you start collecting the water, or toss out your first 2 or so ounces of water you produce.

I was actually looking for this just to see if using a pressure cooker was possible to use both easily AND safely. This answered the question with a resounding YES. I want to distill my water for use in a CPAP (BIPAP actually), and for mixing my own windshield washer fluid among other things, so I don't really care what it tastes like. This will work very well. Now if I can only find a cheap 6 quart to two gallon pressure cooker and a cooling coil for cheap. Marketplace and Craig's list, here I come!

Great idea, saving a lot of lives as SHTF. Also distills microplastics (endocringe disruptors), supposedly, like from pvc pipes, any liquids with higher boiling points than water will not be distilled. We have hard water, way too much minerals, iron, calcium carbonate, I agree, distill and then add sea salt, store in glass bottles with cork tops.
@MarkRemovedChannel11 күн бұрын
Other way around ... - liquids with lower boiling points than water _WILL BE_ distilled: ie: alcohol is distilled at around 80 to 95 degrees Celsius, whereas water is distilled at 100 degrees Celsius ... in other words, the steam/vapour from the chemicals will be distilled _BEFORE_ the water vapour. That's why alcohol distilling has foreshots, heads, hearts & tails.

I think what you need to do is have a thermometer... while the water is getting closer and closer to 100C... don't connect your distillery stuff... let that stuff boil off... once it is at a steady 100C that is when you should put the lid on. To be on the safe side once you have 1/2 to 3/4 of the volume distilled from the original water... stop. That will prevent you from boiling off the chemicals that want to boil off at temps greater than 100C and contaminate your water.

This is an excellent video! After watching your water filter videos I had actually been pondering distilling water with my tea pot. LOL My thought process was for what I had on hand right now. Could the off taste come from metal of the canner? I know the water from my teapot tastes a bit like metal.
@jwwm29 жыл бұрын
+Madison C Iowa It could be that the metal leaves a taste in the water. A glass distiller would be optimal. I'd trust the water from my distiller to be safe, though. There are already a lot of videos about the type of distiller I show in my video, though. The important thing in my video is the part where I mention that distilling water with antifreeze. or petrochemicals is a deadly idea. you can improve the performance of your set up by making a dedicated cooling can where the steam enters the coil of copper line at the top and then the coil spirals downwards with the output end exiting near the bottom of the can through the side and then use an elbow joint or bend the copper line downwards so the drips will fall in a consistent pattern/manner. use an empty restaurant sized can and then where the copper coil exits at the bottom through the side, seal up any leakage there with some food grade silicone calking. then fill your cooling can with ice water which will surround the coil and greatly improve your distillation rate and possibly increase your out put and should still fit inside your cooker. if it does not then trim the can down from the top until it will fit. yes this will mean that you have to put the catch container below counter top level or raise the cooling can up above counter top level but the gains should be worth the extra bit of trouble that goes into adjusting your set up. another thing to consider is wider the copper tubing will speed you up but only so much. anything over 1/2 inch for this size pot still would be overkill

If you're only distilling water, get rid of the copper tubing. You need stainless steel tubing. You only need copper if you're distilling alcohol. The copper helps remove sulfides from the alcohol, but it puts a mineral like metal taste in water.

I am a Power Engineer and I work in a Power Plant. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get 100% pure water from making steam and condensing it in one stage. The reason you see steam is that it has suspended (liquid) water droplets. If you turn the heat up on a stove, the water just boils away faster. More heat does not cause suspended water droplets to vaporize completely. In a power plant this is important because water suspended droplets in steam erode turbine blades very quickly. You must make 100% pure steam with no suspended water droplets in a power plant. All gases, including steam, are invisible when there is ONLY gas. So, this video is correct in that distilled water does not necessarily remove all contaminants. So how do power plants get 100% steam that is only gaseous and has no suspended water droplets? They superheat the steam. Basically, this means that a boiler produces wet steam - steam that has some suspended water droplets. Then that wet steam goes through a section of piping where it is exposed to heat from the boiler a second time. This part of the boiler is called the "superheater". It "superheats" steam, i.e. raises it above and beyond the boiling point of the water. Having said that, you shouldn't try to rig up a system at home that superheats steam if you don't know what you are doing. People have done stupid things at home like trying to boil water in a propane bottle to create high pressure steam. In one case, the propane bottle exploded and one person was killed. In Canada at least, all pressure vessels have to be properly rated, licenced, and tested, etc. This is not a criticism, just an explanation of why distilling water does not necessarily remove all contaminants, although it does remove almost all.

@barryputnam28737 жыл бұрын
I can tell you why you didn't care for the taste... you got brand new copper tubing and never mentioned doing anything to ensure it is as clean on inside as can be; (no doubt someone else made you aware of this). If not, just running the same for a few hours should remove the mfg chems from inner surface of the tubing / fitting (think lubricating "oils" associated with the inner shaping mandrel). A design for the tubing coil which lets the far end exit the condensing vessel at a lowest point with no feature of necessary pushing of condensate back "uphill" would be a significant performance improvement. your glass bowl does require that uphill flow, causes pooling of condensate in the tube ahead of the edge of the bowl where it may pass over. if you have a possibility to provide a constant flow of "waste water" to the cooling vessel, especially entering coolest at bottom, and flowing excess heat away at a upper level limiting exit flow hole, this will maximize the efficiency of your condensing heat exchanger. think of Bc truck video and blue bucket. he didn't incorporate the cooling flow option for his cooler tank, but that leaves you with a lessening efficiency as the cooling water temp comes up from steam heating. Ideally, this cooling flow could be gravity fed from some supply of "free" water, ie creek, rainbarrel, etc. I guess I should design and build my own.
@jwwm27 жыл бұрын
You may well be right. I was thinking the off taste was due to the fact that the pressure cooker had been used to cook food. You're also right about the cooling tube not being set up properly.
@W_H_K7 жыл бұрын
As to the safety of it, there's two schools of thought on it: 1) The establishment view; the same one that supports fluoridation etc, and 2) Those of us who know far better that the establishment and it's false narratives and have much knowledge over many vast fields of interest. Simply ask any experienced and qualified survivalist what to drink when all you have is sea water, filthy fresh water, or water with which you are unsure. They will tell you to distill your water with either a solar still (very slow process), or a method similar to the above video only collected on a campfire setup. In all the survival literature, military and civilian, that I have collected over the years it states nowhere that it isn't safe to drink. In fact, it states that it will keep you alive indefinitely.

Use stainless-steel tubing and if you can find it a stainless-steel cooker. you can't do much about the rubber gasket but that's life. By the way, I wonder how much it cost to run the gas stove that long. You also can buy distilled water at the store.

People who make their own don't tend to trust buying distilled water.

you need to use a activated charcoal filter to remove the compounds that have a lower boiling point than water.this will eliminate that plasticy weird taste...
@jwwm27 жыл бұрын
That's probably the right way to do it.

Great videp friend. I was thinking of doing the same setup with a stove top pressure cooker like your's, but with stainless steel tubing to eliminate any copper trace in the drinking water Also, I would install a 0 - 20 Psig guage on the lid as a safety percaution to monitor pressure. Now, if I could find a pressure cooker like your, I'll be set to purify water from our back yard swimming pool as one water source, but as a last resort. But hey, would'nt it be easier to locate a clear water spring near by, that you can filter and treat with 2 drops of unscented clorox bleach that kills germs to 1 Duart of this filtered water, then shake and let stand for an hour before drinking. Its great to figure different methods of making your own drinking water, because the rule is, you'll last only 3 days without good drinking water. I just bought a Katadyn Pro Water filter for when I go hiking, I also viewed the Swamp Boss youtube video on how he did a homemade water purifier on the cheap, which I duplicated for myself.

My first concern is the ALUMINUM pot . I will not COOK in aluminum . Don't know for sure if this process would leach any aluminum into the water or not but I believe I'll PASS . Have you ever seen a NON- aluminum Pressure cooker ?

Just take a mineral supplement by capsules or tablets every day rather than adding minerals to the water. Bad taste can come from the copper tubing or plastic container.

The pressure cooker is aluminum, that is why it tastes funny.

When adding back minerals, only use organic minerals found in living things, not minerals from the earth!

You do realize that all minerals come from the earth? And ultimately from the stars, right?

Great video on how to make a distiller out of a preasure cooker, but you are not properly informed about distilled water and inorganic minerals. Here is a good rule of thumb - Don't believe any man that has disburbingly creepy long finger nails.

Ok the whole distilled water isn't safe B.S. First this comes from people that are against salt. If you are adding salt to your food you have no problems. For every 10 gallons of water add 1 teaspoon of salt. Iodine salt is best. You don't need no fancy salt. Just regular generic iodine salt. Iodine salt is sea salt. You will see salt labeled as sea salt that is much more expensive. If it is iodine salt it is sea salt. However not all sea salt is iodine. You can buy sea salt that the iodine has been removed. And not all iodine salt is taken from a sea. Back when it was deposited it was a sea. But there are deposits that are NOW in mountains. I own some land that is 5000 feet above sea level. Less then two foot down I have iodine salt. Not worth mining due to the price of salt. But I have more salt on that land then I'd ever use.

Straighten the copper tubing, make a small steel wool ball and string, polish clean the inside of the tubing and rinse. Stainless is best but at a cost. Also , the pot should be stainless. Wah lah , no dry taste to the water. For smooth drinking water, put a "Tri-vortex " under the drinking glass or holding container for a few minutes to five. Distilled water is H20. Period. If you need to know why it's said to be bad, follow the supressive. The minerals in water are not organic as in food. If you want to know who is right, It's the person using true protocol of science. Not pseudo. Question everything.

I think a lot of the bad taste is coming from the aluminum pot you are using. It would be much better to use stainless steel. My opinion.

How often does someone mistakenly distill their radiator fluid instead of using tap, lake or river water? And WHO distills WASTE water ?!?!?
@jwwm26 жыл бұрын
Those remarks were made as advice for people that intend to use a distiller in an emergency situation. If someone was in a dry climate and was desperate for drinking water they might think they could drain a radiator, and distill it. Not everyone lives near rivers and lakes, you know. Beyond that, I've read accounts of people in the desert distilling urine and other kinds of waste water for drinking water. It's usually done with a solar still because it stinks, but if that's all someone can get, it'll work. Satisfied?
@Dr.Stein996 жыл бұрын
Ok, I was probably ignorant. What I did get out of this, is the precaution to use only water without any petroleum / oils that could also vaporize and be distilled back into a fluid again. Without the skills and tools to test - nobody knows what is in their tap water. My tap water taste like it could actually be pumped into my house from someone else's waste water.

It's me, John Strabismus. I don't feel like switching accounts again. Right. If I was in your situation I'd drink distilled water, or I'd filter it. Over here in the Philippines I filter all of our drinking water with a Sawyer .01 filter. The water here is good, though, and I probably don't really need to do that. We're living on a very small, very mountainous island with numerous fresh water springs and rivers. Additionally, each municipality has its own water supply. I'm going to make a video about that one of these days. Anyway, I wish you well.
