Thanks Chad. God saved me when I was diving near Fiji. I am asthmatic and ran out of air because of strong currents. My dive buddy did not surface with me. I went to the 15 m point and waited to decompress. It was at that point that the light on the underside of the boat went out. I was caught in a strong current. I found myself drifting in the middle of the Pacific in shark infested waters. The sky was bright with stars. I figured that I would try to swim to the brightest star, hoping it would be the light on the top of the boat. That was not it. Unsure of what to do, I picked another dull light after turning around in the water. I swear as hard as I could with all the strength I had left. God led me to the boat. If I had been off by 1°, I would have been lost. The odds of getting there were extremely low. Somehow God help me keep my cool until I got up on the boat and broke into a severe panic attack. I fully credit God with saving my life that day.

What amazes me is the Jesus listened to the demons' request to be put in the swine and Jesus allowed it! That teaches me that I can go to God about anything-there is no request too small.

I also read Psalm 130, which begins with “Out of the depths I have cried to You, O LORD; Lord, hear my voice.” And I couldn’t help but connect it with this man who was in agony, cutting himself and crying out. And Jesus arrives in that area JUST to see him and no one else. Jesus heard this man’s cry, and He delivered him from his demonic possession. I think that is so beautiful.

What I find amazing about this story is that Jesus and the disciples crossed the sea, they meet this man and Jesus heals him. The other locals ask him to leave. So they leave. They basically crossed the sea for 1 very lost sheep. Was he even a Jew? What love!!! There are so many lessons in this story.

I always assumed the cutting of himself was part of the demonic activity tormenting the man, but now I think more that it was the man trying to rid himself of the demons for as soon as he sees Jesus even from a distance, he immediately runs to him and bows down. It changes my perspective. In having a granddaughter who cut herself, we prayed that she would run to Jesus and bow down. She no longer cuts and the reason behind her cutting has been eliminated. Praise God!

When I was younger, I thought Jesus was being mean whenever I read this, but now that I’m older and 20+ years into my walk with Christ, I see that it’s about evangelizing to those closest to you.

So much in this chapter. I like that Mark preserves for us the voice of Jesus in his native language - Talitha cumi.

The man who had been possessed became the man who has been healed. And he was sent back to the people who drove him out. He became a walking testimony.

I would imagine he was quite lonely in the immediate aftermath of Jesus's departure. The former demon-possessed man had no doubt scared off any close connections with his horrifying behavior. Then, at Jesus's urging, the man most likely wouldn't stop talking to others about how wonderful his Savior was. However v17 says, "Then they began to beg [Jesus] to leave their region." From there I would assume loneliness followed the newly healed man due to his miracle scaring the people (and threatening their economy through the threat of losing more pigs). And yet, if I had to further guess, I'd supposed the healed man thought himself not lonely, but the most cherished man in all creation. After all, the Son of God had left heaven to find him in his misery and heal him of his suffering.

It's an easy share! What the L❤RD has done! There is NO force of evil stronger than the power of Jesus! Evil recognized who he was than. Evil recognizes Jesus in us who believe today! Rebuke evil. To God be all the Glory! ❤

The man's story confounds me... why did Jesus tell him 'no"? Why didn't He explain, He does in every other account of Him replying negatively and not many stuck - like the woman with the little dog story, or His mom at the wedding, or when Martha wants Mary to help - even when He is being "tried", He doesn't say "No" directly to the Roman's. Why is this account of a miracle different than every other? Thank you, I really enjoy all your videos

Such a good question, Nancy! I wouldn't presume to know all the answers, but I'd just throw out there: the Scriptures aren't necessarily an exhaustive presentation of every detail of events surrounding Jesus. I wouldn't be surprised if the conversation included more than just "no" but, in God's providence, the author Mark didn't desire to record more than that in this instance. Just an idea!

I thought it was interesting that Legion begged Jesus again and again not to be sent out of the area.

What is interesting here in Mark 5 is that Jesus explicitly tells the man to go home to his friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for him. At the end of the chapter, which the healing of Jairus's daughter, He explicitly tells them that no one should know about this. While in the middle with the healing of the woman with blood flow, He performed the miracle in a crowd of people so there was no way to keep the crowd quiet. It is interesting to try and understand why Jesus told some to be silent, while telling others to tell what had been done for them. I suspect some of had to do with the target audience.

Vs 36, Jesus over hears people and says Don’t be afraid , just believe. What was Jesus telling the people to believe.

I wonder why the publicly demon delivered man was to tell others about this miracle done by Jesus, but Jairus' household is told to not tell others and no one else is allowed in to view the miracle . Jairus would have had a captive audience in the synagogue. Is it that the Jews were not ready to hear?

Sounds like a great guess to me @Sharon! I'd also suggest that maybe it had to do with the likelihood that Jesus's ministry would be burdened by additional popularity if Jairus's story got out. As opposed to the demon-healed man who was already ostracized from his community - that sort of man's evangelism would probably not amount to a whole city swarming Jesus. Reference the first chapter in Mark we read a few days ago. Because Jesus's instructions to keep silent his ministry, he was effectively unable to teach, and heal in that city anymore because he was being swarmed. Maybe Jesus sought to do more in Jairus's town before such a swarming could occur? Just an idea!

This man lived in the area of the Decapolis, heavily populated by non-Jews. Their reaction to the man's healing would not have provoked the same kind of over-reactive, messianic fervor that Jesus was trying to avoid, especially early in his ministry.
