Exactly what I needed. Downsizing to a small travel trailer means less storage. Instead of round I made an oval shape basket out of cotton canvas material for my toilet paper. Holds 4 rolls. I added iron on interfacing fabric in between material to make it sturdier. Very happy with my results. Your instructions were easy to follow. Thank you!!

I think this goes on the list of something I can teach my 11 year old granddaughter this summer. It can be done with any size circle and any height you wish:)

I've been sewing for 40 years, and sew over pins all the time. I can count on one hand the number of times the machine needle has hit the pin and snapped. The thread has stopped the needle end from flying off. Yes, it's a risk, but I am not good enough at maths to be able to calculate the times it's happened over my hours of sewing. Having said that, it's easy enough to sew a short straight seam without pinning. Or pin three times- at the start of the seam, in the middle, and at the end. Use finer pins, as another commenter has said. And to those new at sewing, there are much better tutes out, that explain the types of fabric and interfacing/stabiliser required to complete the project. TL/DR- you can sew over pins, and there's better tutes out there.

It would be great if you could indicate what type of fabric to use. Obviously a stiffer fabric would be better than a Jersey because the basket would not stand up if a Jersey or a knit were to be used. A canvas or denim would be great for this project. Even a stiffer cotton would work. Thinner fabrics such as rayon or even a silky type would require interfacing to make it more substantial. The concept is good but the instructions could have been better.

Ok soooooo, the circumference of a 12” diameter plate IS 37.69” NOT 30” AS THE VIDEO PORTRAYS. Good GREIF!!! Is someone double checking the M A T H over there at Bluprint?? I have only been sewing for 2 yrs so I REALLY pay attention to the videos to assist me. This video is not accurate which wastes my time. My husband and I have determined that the plate used in the video is 9.250” in diameter to make a circumference of 29.05”. Am I alone out here in the wilderness?? AND. NO I do not sew over pins!!!

I agree. You are not alone! This is a lousy tute, especially for newbies to sewing. Funnily enough, when I was taught to sew, I was taught to sew over horizontally placed pins! LOL!

The video says she's using a 12" plate but that would require the length of the side fabric to be 37.69 + 1" seam allowance and rounding off the side fabric would have to be cut to approx. 38 3/4. She must have made a mistake either on the measuring tape or her actual plate size. It certainly doesn't look like that side piece is 38 inches long!

Is the seam allowance actually 1"? It looks so much more like 1/2" in this video. I tried a smaller bin (7" plate trace) and the seam allowance seemed wrong for sure.
@roadrunner123
@roadrunner123 3 жыл бұрын
If you want your finished bottom to be 7", cut your circle to 8 inches and your fabric for the sides at 23 inches. This is for a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Maybe use batting between outer and inner for more upright standing fabric finish and even quilt the outer fabric first for different finish🙋🏻‍♀️🎄

I was thinking the exact same thing. I accidently sewed over a missed pin and had I NOT had my glasses on the broken needle would have hit me in the eye. Very dangerous indeed!

Some of the fancier machines actually let you run over pins safely but it's probably not something to be teaching a beginner with a cheap machine anyway
@samiraadams6980
@samiraadams6980 5 жыл бұрын
thebeast ingaming the machine being fancy or not changes nothing, because it’s when the two needles meet when its game over, and nothing can interfere, no setting nothing.

A needle can hit a pin even on a fancy machine. It is a risk that is best avoided.
@patrickfarley8036
@patrickfarley8036 4 жыл бұрын
Oh stop it! The point of the needle may, I repeat, may dull a bit after hitting 100 or so pins, but ladies really. Sewing machine needles are not brittle. Should you drop one it won't shatter or crack. Sewing needles have the ability to flex and that coupled with the fact that even a medium gauge straight pin is .036" ( 0.9mm ) thick and most light pins are .020" wide, the pins pose no threat to the needle! The needle will just slide over to one side of the pin or the other. Always taking the path of least resistance! Providing of course your pins run perpendicular to the feed direction and not parallel to the feed direction which would allow the needle the opportunity to strike the same pin many times depending on the length of the pin and stitch length setting. And even then the damage wouldn't be as bad as how horrible the stitch line would look!! Really the only problem with sewing over pins is if the round or flat head of the pin runs between the presser foot and dogs. That poses the biggest threat if anything. See for yourself by laying a straight pin across the dogs and you'll notice how hey just fall into the low part of the grooves and won't get squashed between the points of the dogs and the presser foot! So go right ahead and sew over your pins. Saves time too! Just don't forget to remove them later! 😨 yeeooowwwwie! 😂
