Thanks man! To anyone that followed this guide but still couldn't connect to either 5GHz or 6GHz networks, check whether your router broadcasts multiple connections with the same SSID like my ASUS GT-BE98 did. For example I had both 5GHz connections broadcasting with the same SSID (Ex: 5GHz 1 and 5GHz 2 were both called MyWifi5GHz for some bloody reason), the 5GHz 1 had bandwidths 20/40/80 enabled while the other had 20/40/80/160, I renamed one of them into something else and now I can connect to both. I can also connect to the 6GHz ( with the 320MHz bandwidth enabled) but the download speed sucks for some reason , getting 140 Mbps as opposed to the 5GHz network that gives me 920+ Mbps (I have gigabit connection). Same results with Wifi power management disabled/enabled.

I just read one of the replies here. Anyone else having random wifi drops and stuttering out of nowhere? Using a mesh wifi 6e. Often the device has to be restarted to fix the issue until the next time it happens. It kills the remote play experience completely and unexpectedly. It's literally the only thing keeping the OLED model from being perfect. Maybe the Steam Deck has issues with Mesh networks?

This kind of thing happened to me about a decade ago with a B&N Nook 2e. Basically, an update pushed a new version of wpa_supplicant(.so) that caused some strange handshake issues with my ISP-provided router, which I needed to use because cable STBs relied on it. I didn’t actually try to track down the precise source of the error, but manually back to the previous wpa_supplicant version fixed it in that edition of the firmware, until a new one came out. Kind of a shame there isn’t more rigorous testing of WiFi but there is such a variety of hardware out there that I suspect this isn’t really feasible. Anyway, very cool, easy to understand vid, great keeping everybody informed and helping ppl out!

I had this problem where my spectrum internet couldn't install the 1st update during the initial setup process after unboxing. I tried on both the 2.4 and 5 signals... Ended up having to drive a town over to a McDonald's and borrow their Free Wi-Fi to start my update, then go home and use the 2.4 since it acts unstable and keeps disconnecting from the 5 signal. Now, some Decky plugins randomly break from time to time, but restarting the deck usually fixes it for a bit.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me. I believe the culprit is my eero pro 6E router. I still get great speeds but I’ve only had it connect to 6ghz once since I’ve owned the deck (eero app shows devices and which band they’re on), and not sure how/why I can’t replicate it. Not much customization in the routers app either, like different ssids per band, so no real way to force it

3.5.17 just launched to stable and it has some wifi fixes in it. I wonder if Valve fixed it for good now. I will do a full reimaging later on today, update and see if that cuts it.

For those interested, the 3.5.17 seems to be fixed. Did a full reimaging, deck wouldn't connect to wifi. Connected to internet through cable, applied updates, connected right away.

Updating to this now. Hopefully this will fix the wifi instability issues. The wifi issues totally mess up Chiaki4Deck when the wifi randomly decides to go crazy.

I had stability issues with the Wifi connection on my LCD model too (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz). To solve this I had to enable Devloper mode and disable Wifi Power Management. Just throwing it here, in case someone else need help with the LCD model too.

The worst part of the Steam Deck is - I think depending on Linux - it having trouble with repeater networks. My Steam Deck always tries to connect to my repeater instead of the router, even if the router is 5cm away from the Deck and my repeater is behind 5 walls and 20 meters of space. :(

Still is not working for me. This is driving me insane. The only way I can get it to connect to my home network is if I have no security. WPA2 and/or WPA3 wont work. The password is very simple, just letters and numbers. I have tried every fix I have found out there. I have even RMAed the damn thing. They replaced the wifi antenna and the audio board (not sure why they replaced this). I just got it back today. Still same issue. Connects to my iphone hot spot just fine. I have not checked my work wifi in awhile but last I recall it did not connect. Like what the hell do I do at this point? I am so frustrated and at a loss. Anyone have any advice? I only tried the first fix, should I try the second?

I have an eero Pro 6E mesh and while my Deck OLED connects it consistently has a very weak signal compared to other devices.

@@cryobyte33I’ve had this issue as well and I can confirm that disabling wifi power management DOES NOT fix it. I have a UniFi network with U7 pro APs and verified that RSSI sits usually around 70dB on 5Ghz and 6Ghz SSIDs but when the issue is occurring has weird periodic spikes to 80+dB that will cause spurious disconnects. For me it’s most disruptive using moonlight, I’ll get flawless 90 fps gameplay lag free but every couple min I will get a sudden “session terminated” and have to reconnect. This will repeat until rebooting the deck which usually fixes the problem until the next play session. Speed tests in the same spot when there’s no issue yields 878 Mbps on 5Ghz

@@AwkwaBear it sounds like it's likely a bad advertisement of the MCS or an MCS calculation causing the mesh to miscalculate the optimal AP. Does the problem go away if you disable band steering or change the roaming settings?

@@cryobyte33 so I have meshing disabled as well as band steering (as well as basically every other advanced config setting) I have optimized the radio channel/widths/transmit power for my APs to recommended settings (i also tested minimum RSSI on/off, no difference, I leave it off for now) I have in total two APs that are both hard wired to the network downstairs. I am testing with the upstairs AP, the downstairs AP is very far away and highly unlikely that the deck can even connect to its 5Ghz band. The upstairs in my home is not above the downstairs but rather an adjacent add-on so I do not believe any overlap of coverage or steering is the culprit. And like I said rebooting the deck and retrying in the exact spot pretty much always fixes the issue so I believe it may be a software bug that can occur after the deck sleeps for a bit or something. I do not seem to have connection issues like that with other devices in the same conditions in the same spot.

Same here. Sometimes I can be playing Chiaki4Deck flawlessly and all of the sudden it starts stuttering. I can see the wifi connection symbol come on and off on the Chiaki icon when this happens. Often I have to restart the device and everything goes back to normal.

Just did the fist option. It's the only problem I have with my Steam Deck. I can connect to wifi 6ghz but every now and then connection drops and struggles to connect again. It makes PS5 remote streaming go crazy. I was thinking about RMA but hopefully this works. Thank you for the information 🫡👍🏼

@@ShelbyTurkey not the original poster. But there is a widely reported issue with oled users having wifi performance degradation within first 15 minutes of turning on. Toggling WiFi fixes it. I think the theory is the chip is staying in a power save state after being awoken or turned on. If you search steamdeck oled WiFi issues moonlight and remote play youll see a whole host of similar complaints.

Would this fix also help with the oled weaker WiFi signal? I notice my lcd steam deck has full bars and my oled steam deck has one less bar in the same area. Am I just over exaggerating or could something deeper be happening?

Unfortunately this doesn't fix the issue for me. Still cannot connect to my 5ghz network on WiFi 6. Attempts to connect and then gives "failed to connect" error. Then borks the ability to connect to anything until restart. Then i can successfully connect to my 2.5ghz network. When i ran the commands on the "Syuu" one it came back with "nothing to do" or something similar. But yea, still not fixed for me

@@cryobyte33 I know there's a whole steam community page with people that can't connect to their 5ghz connection at all on the OLED if the have 802.11ax/WiFi 6 mode enabled, myself included. Or band 160mhz enabled. I'm using an Asus RT-AX86U. If I disable both those in my router, instantly connects to 5ghz. If enabled the issue I mentioned above occurs. 2.5ghz is unaffected regardless of settings, but always requires a restart after a failed attempt to connect to the 5ghz when WiFi 6 is enabled.

When docked the oled's antenna is wrapped in Aluminium which contributes to the problem. I molded all of my Docks by cutting out the center around where the antenna is

My OLED wouldn't connect the my wifi 6 Netgear router, but beta channel update 3.5.12 fixed it. Before that I had to disable AX mode on my router to use the 5GHz wifi.

Just got my Steam Deck OLED today! I usually get 45mb/s with ethernet, so I figured WiFi 6E would at least on par with a 380-ish mbps speed. I use 5ghz still, too But I'm only getting like less than half that. I followed tutorials regarding slow download speeds, but they all just made it even worse

Bro hi, i get constant bluetooth disconnects with wireless headphones. That happens with any headphones but only when im in desktop mode or just browsing the store. While playing a game it doesn't disconnect. Can you find a fix for that?

please help me i used to have LCD steam deck before selling it i store some of my games on external HDD and 512 micro sd now after buying oled steam deck i want to transfere my games back to intrenal SSD but most of the games have these errors :- failed to transfere - file is locked failed to transfere - game is busy failed to transfere - file is already exsisted soultions i tried :- clear steam app cache on desktop mode run install files intigrity update the games they didnt work and i dont wanna format my device it took me time to set it up with decky loader and such ... i would be thankfull for any fix ?

My wifi was stable... so I guess that wasn't the issue that was being fixed. My problem is wifi6e ssid doesn't show up anymore. and when it did, I couldn't connect to it. wpa3 isn't an option shown either...

Anyone have a solution to reset a sudo/admin password? and backing up SD/LINUX Desktop setup/settings? Also if I factory reset my SD will it update it? I'm on 3.4 currently

There are a few videos on YT for how to reset the sudo password without reimaging the whole Deck, but a /home directory backup is a good idea! As for factory resetting, I think it'll try to update to latest.

I updated to the main channel and it didn't fix my issue. Disconnects frequently after waking or restarting while on 5ghz. The only way I can get it to connect to 6ghz is if I put it right next to the router. Once it's connected to 6ghz it's fine, even moving away from the router it's just that first connection that does something to it.

The Wifi has thankfully never been a problem for my Steam Deck OLED. Speaking of which, I wanted to ask you, does Cryo Utilities have a noticable effect on the Steam Deck OLED as it does on the Steam Deck LCD? Or is the performance refinements not as noticeable with the OLED do to its more efficient architecture? Would really appreciate if you could answer. Really want to know about this! 😊

I wonder if this is what I been experiencing on the Nest Pro routers. Got very inconsistent WiFi speeds on them. there isn’t an option to split the network bands there isn’t a way to ensure the steam deck is operating at 6ghz besides looking at the details. I personally don’t use them. I use my steam deck every now and then to test the WiFi after installing internet

On the main channel update I did as of 3-10-24 it keeps telling me the wrong password is being used and will not connect. Basically it does what it did before using the main channel stable update.

Tested the main branch fix to see if it would help with internet speeds. This actually broke the wifi 6. edit: I found my fix, go into desktop mode. open up the network list and configure the wifi 6, change security to wpa3 and apply. Then connect to the wifi. In game mode it cannot select wpa3 but for some reason in desktop mode it can. I also had to forgot 5Ghz SSID. Only had that other one set in, idk if you have to forget them all.

Hey just to let you know, my OLED didn't get fix with this. Yet Wifi6 don't works for more than some seconds after reconnect. For now I'm using an old Asus AC87U that I had spare as the 5Ghz network, is the only way that I could make the steam deck have wifi at home.

Hi Kyle have you looked into fsr 3 mods? I have had massive success with the Lukefz mod. It works great but my new preference is swapping out fsr 3 for nvngx files for dlss 3.5 and using dlss tweaks to implement dlaa. I can get a steady 60 fps in hogwarts legacy. Granted I had to set the quality lower but the upscaling made it the same quality with better performance.

I think eero routers or devices, whatever they are, have something to do with this problem, because my Oled started kicking me off of games or logging me out of my steam account saying too slow of a connection, but the connection is 1gb up and down, it's an eero 6 I believe

Interesting, it might be trying to boot you to another AP. Does the same happen if you set your Wi-Fi to have a long preamble in the router's settings?

Hello, I just received my steam deck Oled, and i cant even get past the initial wifi setup to setup the deck, it does not connect to wifi at all. Ive tried multiple things with my ISP but i dont think they are the issue. I called them and they said they do not block any ports. Because I saw that steam put on their help information that certain ISPs block the ports to connect to the wifi. I put a ticket with steam, is there a way i can go into developer mode and skip the very first initial set up wifi connection screen?

U have to get Ethernet cable n hook straight into router then switch to main branch n u will be good trust me 😂 Ethernet cable will allow u to get past the initial Wi-Fi set up

Ran the pacman fix And that works now. Yippee But the main issue I'm having now is the pop up menus are bugged. Can't pull up the power menu, options menu, etc. It takes a sleep wake cycle to be fixed w/o forced reboot and that's not guaranteed to fix it. Anyone else having a similar issue?

Just recently upgraded my router to the EERO Max 7 for multi device use and game streaming via moonlight. I went into desktop mode on the steamdeck and manually enabled WPA3 security. I also turned on WPA3 in the EERO app under the discover tab. When doing this on both devices, the Steam Deck OLED is stuck in 2.4GHz. It seems to also delete the initial connection. When disabling WPA3 in the router's and Steam Deck's settings, the Steam Deck is then able to connect to 5GHz again. I tried the wifi fix in the video and have also tried connecting to the main update channel (this caused the deck to need a complete reinstall of steam os so do at your own risk) Is this device really not capable of 6e or WPA3? I did see another comment saying Valve confirmed the lack of WPA3 support. I’m unable to separate the SSIDs, but it seems like the Steam Deck is unable to function above 2.4 GHz when all 3 bands are on one SSID. Really hoping to not need to turn off WPA3 in the router settings as then I lose 6GHz all together.

@@LaymanGamin got stuck in a verifying boot loop. Lost both bios saves and was connected to Ethernet. Tried for 2 hours and eventually needed to just reinstall

I updated to the main channel which fixed some of my issues, but other issues (the deck not working with WPA3) are persisting. Is the command line the more comprehensive fix? Is it worth doing if updating to the main channel didn't fix all of my issues?

They should be very similar, so the packages won't make much of a difference. That said, the WPA3 issue exists for the LCD version too, can you try going to desktop mode and adding the network from there? It should persist in game mode and on future reboots, it just seems to be a Steam client issue 🙂 Thanks for watching!

@@cryobyte33 Yeah--when I do this, it disconnects from the 6Ghz. When I reconnect to it, it makes me enter the password again and the authentication for the connection is set to WPA2 (which is weird, because my I assume that since my 6Ghz band is only WPA3, it shouldn't be able to connect with WPA2 at all). It treats the previous 6Ghz connection--which I set to WPA3--as a separate connection and won't connect to it.

Does this fix any Wi-Fi disconnection issues on Steam Deck original model on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz? Or have they been fixed since November of last year? Also I don't think it's using 6GHz as the title claims, but 5GHz...

It’s not connecting at all. Eero app shows 5 ghz connection. I’ve tried both methods in your video, turning on WPA3, and using the eero labs option to optimize for gaming.

@cryobyte33 Sort of. I ended up upgrading to a 2TB NVMe and forgot about that extra step. Didn't remember until the Wi-Fi dropped out again after filling most of it. After the second re-install, it's been stable, but I worry about updates. Been stable for months now, though!
