It's called a Circuit Interruption Disc and it pops up as a safeguard for when too much pressure builds up in the cell. Whether that's from a short, damage, atmosphere, who knows. But essentially that battery at one point was saying it wasn't safe to be used. But I've seen quite a few cells revived this way. Not sure how well they hold up though
@honestinsincerity2270

@@fakingit4047 Will kinda. After you push it down manually you're weakening it and it may or may not be able to pop back up under pressure. It's kinda designed for a one time use and once it's popped you're supposed to get rid of the battery. But, that's not to say I've never pushed one back down, tested it thoroughly and then reused it

@@honestinsincerity2270 is it dangerous? I have several batteries that won’t take a charge. I have no idea as to why I mess up a lot of batteries. I’m sick of buying them. I tried new chargers and batteries from different sellers. I think it’s me and if this isn’t dangerous I might try it. I don’t wanna blow up.

@@AshleyAshleyAshley395 Kinda. I mean it is a one time use safeguard so once it's tripped the manufacturer is basically saying this battery is no longer safe for use. But, with that said, they also want you to buy as many batteries as possible. Personally, I've revived quite a few cells by pushing the CID back down. And I still use them to this day.
@honestinsincerity2270
@honestinsincerity2270 3 жыл бұрын
@@AshleyAshleyAshley395 and if that's happening a lot to you and you're using name brand cells like Samsung, LG, etc then it could be you're charging them too quickly or at too high of a voltage. Usually that'll cause heat in the cell, which cause pressure, which causes the CID to pop out. So might wanna make sure you're using a good charger on the right settings.

Absolutely brilliant video diy vinney. I was successful so far with three 18650's. When I pressed the cid button underneath I heard the reset click sound. Question: Once the the click sound,; is it necessary to press the remaining open slots? I assume there is only one reset button underneath the positive tab? Thank you for explaining the procedure with clarity, and excellent photography. Your really skilled as a tutorial master! All the best with gratitude.

Do not boost lithium-based batteries back to life that have dwelled below 1.5V/cell for a week or longer. Copper shunts may have formed inside the cells that can lead to a partial or total electrical short. When recharging, such a cell might become unstable, causing excessive heat or show other anomalies. - Battery University

From A "Safety First!" prospective, this is not a good practice. First of all, Safety IS the main reason for this design. This is to prevent an explosion or a fire! The battery obviously had something go wrong in order to prompt the button to "Pop" up. To expect this to work Every Time, is not a good thing. Sure, you might be lucky and this battery lasts a very long time again. Or you might be unlucky and destroy your equipment or your eyes. Maybe even your house, when the batter leaks or explodes.It is never a good idea to ignore safety. NEVER! Just ask yourself if money is more important than you or your family's safety?

Makes complete sense. It's just like a little cheapo circuit breaker installed in the battery. Great, except for the fact that it makes you unnecessarily have to buy new batteries, and, in most cases, an entire battery pack. I've got a defective 40 volt lithium ion battery, and I've seen a number of videos on how to revive them, so, getting right on that tomorrow morning! A new 40 volt battery is a hundred bucks, and from the reviews on them, even if I got a new one, that one would fail very quickly it appears. I think part of the problem is manufactures are setting the "fail safes" to conservatively, or their setting the discharge fail safe too low. In other words, they should make it so the battery is "dead" with a higher voltage left in it, so if you don't immediately put it on the charger when it's "dead" it will retain enough voltage for when you DO put it on the charger, for the charger to recognize it. But, obviously they don't want the batteries to last TOO long. You won't have to buy new batteries or tools, if that was the case!

Very clever indeed! Its true, they are in the business to make money over & over, not for you to be able to keep your battery working longer... If you can help yourself, then you don't need them (as often anyway)..

DIY Vinny, Thank you for helping people with their issues. You titled the video 18650 CID Reset DONT DO IT. This for a very good reason. IF you want to create video's about risky tricks like this, try to explain why you SHOULDNT TRY THIS. Imagine that there are people trying this at home and ending with the possibility on lifelong injuries. A battery cost around 10 euro, it is reckless behavior messing around to save 10 euro. IF you made this video about the risks of messing with this batteries, you would have the same amount of viewers etc,. But instead of pushing people to try risky things, you would protect your viewers by giving them the right information about this kind of tricks. BEFORE YOU TRY THIS AT HOME. OVERTHINK IF ITS WORTH TAKING THE RISK TO LOSE YOUR EYESIGHT OR WORSE. JUST SPEND THE FKK 10 EURO FOR YOUR SAFETY.

I must admit that this worked for me, a 18650 that had been overdischarged and after a very gentle charge it went open circuit due to this venting protection. The cell did vent slightly when the button was depressed and is no longer open circuit, capacity seems close to what it was originally, it is a fake LG. Obviously this is a dangerous practice, you need to be extremely careful not to short the cell or puncture it. My "revived" cell will not be used for any high current discharge, I am still pissed that my 4 LG 18650s were fake despite being careful where I bought them.

Just a quick note here: If you do this and you hear a "poof" or "hiss" noise while pushing the CID disk down, that means you've punctured it which also means that the overload protection will no longer work. If the battery is overloaded, like with a short-circuit, it will overheat and could burst and catch on fire (what many people call an exploding battery).

FYI - That poof sound was you puncturing the CID disc that pops after pressure builds up and disconnects the circuit as a safe guard. You were letting the pressure out and then pushing the metal disc back in place so that it makes contact. Just in case you were wondering.

This works. I tried it. But, if that metal thing pops up, it means that there's a over pressure inside the cell, so the battery may be not safe to use anymore. When i tried to charge the cell it got warm pretty fast, then the temperature settled at about 30°C ....after some time it started consuming a crazy current (short circuit almost) and the battery got quite hot. So not the safest trick to use (That battery was revived from a completely dead 12 years old battery pack btw, so maybe that heat is caused by it's age)

I had two LG 18650 HG2 batteries, which were reading zero volts from one day to another. Today, my third one suddendly died while having it in my vape. It was still almost halfway full and the vape turned off while I was taking a puff. At home it was also reading zero volts. Then I tried your fix and pressed down the pad below the button on the positive pole and while I was pushing down, I clearly was able to hear gas exiting the battery case!! So I think the shutdown/disconnect is intended by design, in case the cell is gassing out due to an internal chemical failure! I highly do not recommend using such a "revived" battery, since its chemistry is no longer stable!! Never put it in a charger again! I dumped mine now, its not worth it. Best

After charging to100% I only get around 5 minutes use from them whereas new they gave me around an hour (I use them to power a 7” camera monitor). I checked with a voltage meter and they definitely have zero voltage output when discharged. I doubt the charger is faulty as I have two identical chargers and both give 90% percentage readouts when the batteries are definitely flat. What is going on?

I had a same issue with 0 volts. I literally removed a board in the negative side of the battery and is working just fine.

This dudes a tweaker for sure. Its cool if this works but most people are going to be coming here for batteries used in their vapes. When putting one of these up to your face I dont feel its something you can be a "cheap bastard" about. Still, cool if this works but totally not worth it for the people vaping out there.

how to test 18650 battery total capacity without lowering the cut off voltage too much?
@cookinsdabest
@cookinsdabest 5 жыл бұрын
This happens to your battery because it is expanding, it's supposed to happen to prevent it from expanding to the point of failure. If you "fix" your battery with this method, you are putting yourself at risk of the battery catching on fire or "venting" as its called

Hello, I have two effest 18650 batteries in my smok species V2 vape, one battery works as normal but the other dies within a few hours while the working one is still over 70%, Also the abnormal battery takes over a day to fully charge. What causes this issue please if anyone knows?

Internally it's a bad battery, not related to the battery in this video, time to replace, imo stay away from efest batteries
