Growing up, my parents would make me and my brother do mental math to keep track of the grocery bill as items were put into the cart. We always enjoyed telling the cashier the total before they finished ringing everything up. 🤭 I still keep track this way as an adult! It helps you keep your brain sharp and always stay within your budget! 😊

I can totally relate to the grocery over-shopping. Because food is a need, I've given myself permission to buy as long as I don't let it go to waste. Like you, I also have a full freezer and pantry and have been radically cutting back until it's whittled down. I couldn't believe how much food I actually had, when I really looked at it.

LET'S SAVE MONEY! I always consolidate my errands. I am blind in one eye, and the DMV insists that I see oncoming traffic and pedestrians on the right as well as the left, and since I can't do that anymore, I have no driver's license. 😅 Rather than pay for Uber, I hire kids from the local community college to do all my shopping. It's cheaper, I'm not stuck waiting with melting groceries for the next driver, and the kids help me out carrying everything. I have two routes (Safeway, Kroger, Big Lots, Dollar Tree, and Walmart to the north; Target, Sprouts, Trader Joes, and Costco to the east). I alternate between them. It works a treat. Love your content, guys!

You look so good in your new hair cut, Hope! I don't know how, but trimmings your hair has actually made you look younger! I don't know if that's something you wanted, but it sure did happen! 😊 For errands, I sit down and write out where I need to go in each direction. Let's say I need to go to the bank, grocery store and shoe repair shop, and they're all eastward. I do those together. I physically can't handle going out more than once a week. The next week, maybe I have a medical appointment and need to pick up a screen that's been repaired at the hardware store...and they're both in the same direction. I do that all in one trip. In other words, I only go in one direction per errand to save gasoline. I really rarely have to go out, though, because things can be delivered. I have to go out so extremely infrequently that I literally only bought 3 tanks of gas all last year, and the last one was in December, so it lasted into this year a long time. So far this year, I've bought one tank of gas and I still have half a tank. But when I do go out, I plan trips for only one direction at a time. One of the things I like so much about shopping for groceries online is that I can see my ongoing total and make adjustments before I get to checkout. When I see the total bill, it's much easier to see everything I've put in my cart and remove things than if I'm at the store and have to rummage around the cart to see where I want to go back and make cuts. But, there is a cost to having groceries delivered. I have gone to the store myself for small shoppings recently. With fewer items in the cart, it's easy enough to see what to put back. Plus, I can tolerate short periods of standing up, just not long ones, like for the monthly grocery shopping. I'm in another no-spend year. This year it's absolutely mandatory. I think I told you that because of a good COLA increase this year, I get $200 more a month, which promptly made me ineligible for $600 worth of benefits I was getting. So, starting out each month $400 in the hole automatically demands a no-spend year for me. I buy ONLY what's ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY! It's been working out (plus, I'm eating less). So far this year, I've had a little left over each month... anywhere from around $100 up to around $400 one month. I guess this is what Dave's "gazelle intensity" is like!

Let’s save money! One thing I do when grocery shopping is to allow only two extra items not on my list. This is because I will see something on sale or clearance that I only saw when at the store. This has kept me on track and not tossing extras in my cart. Like you, my pantry and freezer were packed. In January I finally buckled down and meal planning from what I have on hand. Grocery budget went way down. It is time for another round of freezer/ pantry meals!

I am so proud of myself. After watching you both, I checked my local ethnic shop's flyer, and just did a strategic shop, spending only $18.13 ( Cdn$) . I bought mostly the sale items, a MASSIVE cauliflower for 2.98, 2 bunches, spinach, onions, 4 cukes, a 4 pound bag of brown lentils and a pack of garam masala a a couple of lemons and onions + a giant lettuce head. I'm cooking lentil dahl right now, rice/ quinoa mixture and roasting 1/2 the cauliflower. I will prepack this into 4 dinners. Each dinner will likely cost me about $1.00 all told! I will also make Hope's 15 cent lentil burgers for lunches with the lentils... Honestly, I think I'm starting to "get" this ; my shopping habits have changed SO much after learning from you, and I'm starting to batch cook meals in advance! ( true confession, my grocery bill used to be $800 + per month, for 1 person ( + someone I cook for 30% of the time) !

Good tip ... I don't eat beef, chicken or especially pork. I eat a lot of carbs and can't lose weight! So frustrating.
@xo7454
@xo7454 Жыл бұрын
@@Lisawhatshersname You might want to look up ketovore and then carnivore... a lot of people have been switching over and reaping the benefits. Transition from standard American diet to ketovore and then carnivore. You do not have to be a permanently strict carnivore, but you can use it for a limited time, as a strategic elimination diet, as it helps resolve the carb addiction, detoxy the body, heal chronic illness, and lose weight. Then when you're ready, you can start reintroducing your favorite food one by one gradually. If your body reacts negatively, then that food ingredient is a a trigger and a health culprit, so you might want to leave it off. Seriously, it has made my shopping and food prep simple and easy. I save money, because I am buying nutrient-dense and satiating food, so I only eat 1-2x per day. Not wasting money on junk ingredients to make food entertaining, carbs that trigger frequent cravings and hunger, and medications for diseases brought on by ultraprocessed food and poor meal choices. Snacks, treats and dessers are very expensive. There are many youtube resources. Just baby steps. You can start by adding fish, seafood and eggs in your diet. Also raw milk and cheese (goat, sheep, cow, water buffalo, etc), if you can source it. Try to avoid pasteurized milk, as it is nutritionally deplete and inflammatory. All the best to you! :)

I print out a blank month calendar at the beginning of the month, then plan meals for the month. I use my grocery store's app and order my groceries for the week to pick up on Saturdays. This helps stay in budget easily since you see the total before submitting. Started during the pandemic when I had a newborn just to make life easier and prevent exposure, but have kept doing it because it works so well for us.

Here's a fun game. Every time you line dry your laundry, pay yourself $.36. it's nothing noticable chump change. At the end of summer turn the savings into dollar bills and put the cash into the pocket of your favorite spring dress. Forget about it and next spring when you put on the dress, you will do the found money happy dance. All because of your "pitiful" $.36 plan. It adds up.

I saved this month by using your tip to ask if cash payment for insurance would be less expensive. While this carrier didn’t offer it- we found one that appreciated our business and saved us $150. Add to that the $121.00 discount they offered for a full cash payment and there we go- $271 back in our pockets! Thanks Hope and Larry! p.s. came back to say, wants are sometimes fed really well by buying used! I just got a special teapot for Mum for $80. It retails for over $500. She sold it because she wanted it to go to someone who appreciated it more than want to flip it. I must say, it is truly art in teapot form!

I'm determined to turn this situation around as soon as possible because it feels so yucky not having a substantial cushion in my checking and savings! No whimsical purchase is worth that grim aftershock! 😢❤😊

I use the apps to put food items in my cart. Then I can decide if I really need a particular item or less of an item before going to the store, as long as items are the same price online vs store price. Love your videos, keep them coming! ❤

We are reasonably frugal and have also reduced the number of our monthly bills to near nill which makes a 10% over all budget reduction next to impossible. '22 brought a number of unplanned, mandatory expenses and during that time we drastically switched up our "spending life style". If needed to go fully bare bones, there are still some things we could do. For the time being, we could eat fully from the larder sans fresh produce, milk, eggs, and bread; we still have butter in the freezer from a killer deal. We routinely pull from the larder whether we do fill in groceries or not because everything there was purchased at good to excellent price; generally 50% to 90% off at the time of purchase. Also because we try to only grocery shop on our way home from other mandatory trips out and every so often, that can be 7 to 10 days. (If were feeling flush, we will get away from home during these longer periods of time for groceries and other.)

OMG my electric bill had gone up not only from $42 a month to $76 a month. I chose to work it out as Hope had said your crockpot and your air fryer. Use less electric than your stove and oven so I tried it for a month. I am now saving $35 a month on electric by not using that stove or I use the stove is a little as possible. Thank you Hope. I will continue to listen to you, Hope and Larry, for more ideas of how to save money who won.t

We had a lot of fun with this video. Watch for the moment in the video when I take something from Larry and he doesn't realize I've done it. His reaction is hilarious. It shows how we love to laugh even after 35 years of marriage.

Thanks for your videos guys! I'm going to check into mint mobile! I'm continuing to always look for more ways to save money. I've learned a lot from you. We are trying an experiment to save on our Air Conditioning costs. We just bought a new free standing AC unit for our bedroom. We use it only at night to sleep and set it at 71 degrees. The rest of the house AC is set at 75. That way we don't have to cool the rest of the house down each night, since we recognize we sleep so much better in a cooler bedroom. We will be tracking our electricity bill to see if we are really saving money or not through this month of June and July etc. But it does feel good to try this new solution. In the meantime we continue to keep our AC set at 75 or 76 degrees during the day, and we are getting used to living with that temperature so far. I love how you guys think 'outside the box' on so many things, thanks again and I'm always interested to see what your other tips are!! Take care!!
