JT just wanted you to know your tutorials have been a tremendous help for me. At heart I am a drummer and bass player. But God spoke to my spirit one Saturday night during a youth service and said "I WANT YOU TO START PLAYING PIANO FOR YOUTH CHOIR". At the time I knew very little about playing the piano. That was 12 years ago. Thank you your help has been outstanding! Keep up the great work! Will

@BLaCkYoSh1 actually, if you are just naming the right hand chords it is a Fmin7 but it is not a Gbmaj7 it is a Gbmaj9 because he added the 9 on top.

F minor 7th and a G flat Major 9th. I'm a rookie. Took me a while.
@UkuleleAversion10 жыл бұрын
No, good try, you are right, the chords being played in the right hand are a F minor 7th and a G flat Major 9th but the root of the first chord, the one you thought was F min7, is being playing in the left hand, B flat, and B flat + F min7= B flat 11 (omitted 3rd) and the second chord, the one you thought was a G flat maj9, again, the root is being playing in the left hand, E flat, and E flat + Gflat Major 9th= E flat min11. These are chord voicings of the dominant 11th and minor 11th chords. Didn't want to put you down, again, you are technically correct that what he was playing without the bass were a F min7- when he was telling us that you better know those chords- and a G flat maj9 but harmonically they are technically a B flat 11 and an E flat min11.

TFP 3141 Huh?
@UkuleleAversion10 жыл бұрын
The chords that you thought were F min7 and G flat maj9 were being a played over a single note (different one each time) in the left hand. That note in the left hand is technically the bottom or the "root" of the chord. The root of the G flat maj9 in the left hand is an E flat. E flat 1, G flat 3, B flat 5, C sharp 7, F 9, and A flat 11. 1, flat 3, 5, flat 7, 9, 11 is a full 11th chord, but when the 3rd (flat 3, which is F sharp) is taken down a half step the interval between the root and third which is now a flat 3 becomes a minor third which makes the chord tonality a minor because of the flat 3 AND also the flat 7 or dominant 7, whichever you like to call it (C sharp). More simply, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, is a major11 but 1, flat 3, 5, flat 7, 9, 11 is a minor11. Now, we have an E flat minor11 chord. Now you can tell me what the F min7 over the B flat. is. If I am still confusing you, pinpoint what you don't understand to me.

I don't think that there's so much an issue with knowing chords as there is to knowing how to voice them. The same four notes played In a cluster possess a different sound quality when played as an open voicing.
